- continued - August 2017 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IITS August 6 communion offering will go to Lydia Patterson Institute (LPI) in El Paso, Texas. At the 2017 Rio Texas Annual Conference, Bishop Robert Schnase encouraged UMCs to support LPI. He said the school has earned a reputation of excellence and placed 100 percent of the 2016 graduating high school class in colleges and universities. No single institution has had a more enduring and fruitful impact on the mission and ministry of our own conference than Lydia Patterson Institute, Bishop Schnase said. Over 150 clergy candidates received their preparation at Lydia Patterson, and 11 district superintendents, four military chaplains, a UM seminary president, and a UM bishop were all educated at LPI. Hundreds of lay persons found their callings and formation for careers in law, engineering, medicine, music, and education. In the late 1800 s a Methodist Missionary Society woman, Lydia Patterson, and other CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS MMS women witnessed the influx of Mexican citizens fleeing the brutality of the Mexican Revolution. Immigrants settled in the Segundo Barrio (Second Ward) of El Paso, one of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods along the Rio Grande River. When El Paso school officials decided not to provide education opportunities for students, the women drove their buggies into the Barrio, picked up students, and took them to Methodist homes for schooling. After Mrs. Patterson died, her husband donated $75,000 in 1913 to buy the land and build the school. It is a beacon of hope and provides education for over 400 students who live in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Every day, students travel from Juárez to the International Bridge, clear immigration, and walk nine blocks to the LPI campus. Free education in Mexico ends at the completion of the eighth grade, and many of the students would not have an opportunity to continue their education without our United Methodist School. Four courses in Christian education and weekly chapel attendance are required. Students wear uniforms and mind their manners. Scholarship students must work a campus job, an arrangement that allows the school to get by with a minimal support staff. Bequer Gomez, an 18-year-old senior from Juárez, makes sure restrooms have toilet paper. He said he s happy to do any job that keeps him in the school. Lydia Patterson has become my home, he said. It s developed my leadership skills, my character. - continued on page 2 -
