GOD S GIVING OF THE LAW AND THE TABERNACLE EXODUS 21 40
VARIOUS LAWS GOD GIVES TO MOSES (EXODUS 21 23:19 Laws about slaves. Laws about making restitution. Laws about social justice.
CONQUEST OF CANAAN (EXODUS 23:20 33) The LORD promises the Israelites will take the land that he has promised them The Lord tells them to completely drive them out. (Exodus 23:33) They were to drive these other nations out of their land to keep them pure from their influence.
THE COMMAND TO BUILD THE TABERNACLE (EXODUS 24 25:9) The LORD renews the covenant (Exodus 24:1 18). The LORD requires a contribution to be made for the purpose of the Tabernacle. (Exodus 25:1 9).
THE TABERNACLE (EXODUS 25:10 31:18) The Tabernacle is representative of God s presence with his people. Each piece of furniture in the tabernacle was significant. Each piece has a significant role in the life of Israel.
THE ARK OF THE COVENANT The ark represented God s mercy. The ark was the way to atone for their sins
The High Priest would put Lamb s blood on the seat once a year to atone (forgive) for the sins of the people of Israel. It also represented God s presence with the people It would go before them in battle. People would be struck down (killed) if they touched it.
THE TABLE OF SHOWBREAD This represented God s provision for his people. The bread could only be eaten by the priests 12 loaves total = 12 tribes of Israel. It reminded the people of their dependence on God s life-giving presence.
THE GOLDEN LAMPSTAND Symbolic of God s presence. The lampstand is seen again in the book of Revelation. (Revelation 2 3)
THE TABERNACLE The Tabernacle is God s holy dwelling in the midst of His sinful people. Serves a dual function. It protects his people from the dangers of unauthorized intrusion into God s holy presence. It presents a way to approach the Lord in his glory. Ultimately the Tabernacle is physical symbol of God s presence Jesus is the tabernacle for us. (John 1:14)
THE BRONZE ALTAR For burnt offerings and sacrifices.
THE PRIESTLY GARMENTS The Priests must wear certain garments when entering the tabernacle. The line of Levi, which Moses and Aaron descend from, serves as the priests for the people. The Priests had to be consecrated or set apart for the duties of the Tabernacle.
THE ALTAR OF INCENSE Lit by the High Priest morning and evening. The smoke covers the mercy seat which protects the high priest from the divine presence.
THE BRONZE LAVER For the priests to ritually clean themselves before entering into the tabernacle.
THE TASK OF BUILDING THE TABERNACLE Two men were given the task to build the tabernacle: Oholiab and Bezalel. God calls them to build the tabernacle because of their unique talents. What has God gifted you with? And how do you use your gift to spread the gospel?
THE GOLDEN CALF (EXODUS 32) While Moses is on the mountain, the people thought he was dead. They ask Aaron to make gods because of Moses absence. The LORD s wrath burns against the Israelites.
Moses Intercedes for the people. God relents from bringing his wrath on his people through the intercession of Moses. God always wants to show mercy, but people must respond to that mercy. Moses goes down the mountain and asks Aaron why they made this golden calf.
Aaron s response shows two sinful behaviors: His failure to worship as holy. He shifts blame for the whole incident.
EXODUS CONCLUSION The LORD commands Moses to leave Sinai. (Exodus 33:1-4) Moses would go and meet with the LORD in the tent of meeting. The people would rise and stay standing. The pillar of cloud would descend and remain at the entrance of the tent. Application: Do you meet with the Lord on a regular basis?
How can I have a more consistent time with the Lord? Have a plan: Do what works best for you. Start small: Choose a smaller book of the bible. And work through it. If you miss a day: Don t panic, just pick up where you left off.
