COURSE SYLLABUS GBST 164 SURVEY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT II COURSE DESCRIPTION A chronological and comprehensive survey of the New Testament books of Acts through Philippians. RATIONALE The New Testament describes for the student the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ and the institution of His church. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Analyze the history and theology of each New testament book (Acts - Philippians). B. Recount the most important persons, places, and events recorded in the New Testament. C. Discuss the events of the life and teachings of the Apostle Paul. D. Explain the teaching of the New Testament concerning the role of the church. E. Describe the birth of the church and its subsequent growth under Paul s apostleship. F. Apply the teaching and spiritual principles of the New Testament to one s own life. VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and lecture presentations. B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (4) The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be a minimum of 500 words and demonstrate courserelated knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 250 words. D. Writing Assignments (2) 1. Writing Assignment #1: Since the good news of Jesus is central to Christainity, the goal of this assignment is to address the nature of the gospel. This assignment is divided into two pieces, both covering the video presentation: The God Who Declares the Guilty Just. a. Review the video (1-2 Pages) o List the main points of the video presentation o Summarize the video presentation b. Describe the gospel in 4 different ways (1.5-2 Pages) o Describe the gospel in one word o Describe the gospel in one complete sentence o Describe the gospel in one paragraph o Describe the gospel in one full page Page 3 of 5

2. Writing Assignment #2: In Ephesians 3:14-21, Paul prays for the believers. He asks for some specific requests on their behalf. The aim of this assignment is to discover what it means for God to give us more than we can ask or think. For this assignment, you are to answer four specific questions (see below) about Ephesians 3:14-21. All of your answers should be approximately 100-150 words each and should directly answer the question being asked. The assignment should total approximately 2 pages, no longer than 3 pages in total. a. Question 1: What does Paul pray for? ( for this reason ) b. Question 2: Why does he pray for this? ( so that ) c. Question 3: What is the goal of praying for it? ( that you may be ) d. Question 4: In the context of Paul s prayer, what does more than we ask or think refer to? (just a hint it is not referring to our physical needs). E. Tests (2) Each test will cover the Willmington textbook readings. Each test will be openbook/open-notes, contain multiple-choice and essay questions, and have a 1-hour time limit. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A.
