Northminster Presby terian Church 7720 Alaska Avenue, N.W. - Washington, D.C. 20012 (202) 829-5311 Email: northminsterpcu@verizon.net Web Page: http://www.northminsterdc.org, Teaching Elder The mission of Northminster Presbyterian Church, PC (U.S.A.) is to give, through God s grace and power, glory to God and to be a community of inspired Christians nurtured and equipped to become effective witnesses of Jesus Christ by reaching out to others with hands that serve, hearts that welcome, and voices that carry the Good News of God s redeeming love to all. October 2, 2016 11:00 A.M WE GATHER IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE INTRODUCTION TO THE CALL TO WORSHIP Elder Henry Jones *CALL TO WORSHIP God has told us to remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy that is, set apart, for God s glory. Therefore let us set aside this day as holy by coming together for worship. *OPENING HYMN This Is My Father s World No.293 Congregation OPENING PRAYER Remembering the commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy, we have come to acknowledge you as our God and to acknowledge Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. Help us to keep it holy by cleansing our souls and removing anything that would hinder us from worshiping in Spirit and in truth.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) You know, Lord, how we sometimes struggle to maintain an attitude that is positive, a point of view that is noble, a self-image that is accurate, a view of others that is benevolent. Forgive us where we have faltered, and help us daily to think, feel, and live as guided by you. Amen ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS All things belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. Adapted from 1 Corinthians 3:21-23 *DOXOLOGY Gloria Patri No. 579 Congregation THE APOSTLES CREED (page 14 in the front of the hymnal) WELCOME TO VISITORS Congregation PRAYER REQUEST If you have a concern or request that you would like included in the Pastoral Prayer, please jot it down on the index card found in the pew rack and hand it to a deacon as they walk the aisle during the singing of the Welcome Song. THE WELCOME SONG THE LIFE OF NORTHMINSTER THE CHILDREN S MOMENT Congregation Elder Mimi Stevenson PASSING THE PEACE (To your North, South, East, and West, pass the peace and love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.) WE PROCLAIM GOD S WORD PRAYER OF PETITION (For the unity of the Church) On this Sunday in which we as a worldwide church celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, we pray for the unity of the body of Christ, the church. Help us to truly accept one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, despite whatever differences we may have.

May we be as zealous in building the unity of the body as we are in maintaining the purity of the faith. As we speak the truth, may we always do so in love. May the human distinctions of politics, race, social status, and worship style never detract from our relationship as Christian believers. May our differences be overshadowed by our common faith and united purpose. May we never disrespect you by disrespecting one another. OFFERTORY PRAYER We give, Lord, in order that your work of proclamation and mercy can continue here and around the world. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER THE INVITATION TO THE TABLE HYMN OF INVITATION Let us break bread No.513 Congregation GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts People: We lift them up to the Lord Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give thanks and praise. Eternal and ever living God, it is right to bless you, to give thanks to you, and to worship you in every place where your glory abides; for you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They shall perish, but you shall endure, for you are always the same and your years will never end. You made us in your image and called us to be your people. But we turned from you, and sin established its reign by way of death. Still you loved us and sought us. In Christ your grace defeated death and opened the way to eternal life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voice with choirs of angels, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name. RESPONSE Congregation Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty heaven and earth are filled with your glory hosanna in the highest, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord hosanna in the highest THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION We give thanks that when he was about to surrender himself to suffering, Jesus took bread. After giving thanks he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again COMMUNION MUSIC The Elders come forward for communion The Bread may be consumed as soon as it is received. Please hold the cup until everyone has been served.
