A Letter from Father Page 2 March 23, 2014 Our Yes, like Mary s Needs Trust This week during Lent we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation. Mary, as a capable student of the Old Testament prophets and prophecies about the Messiah, is suddenly told that they were all to come true through her. Can we just imagine how disconcerted Mary must have been. Then, told that the Holy Spirit will come upon her she says, Let it happen as you say. With these words, the events of our redemption begin to unfold. The key moment of the Annunciation is when Mary submits to the Word of God. Her Yes was her utmost trust in God s will and the power of the Holy Spirit. We might reflect on some moment in our own life when we took the most risk submitting to God s word. It takes courage to really submit, not half-heartedly, not with our fingers crossed, not hedging our bets, not with a wink and a nod, not only half way but thoroughly submitting to God s word. When we read God s word or hear it in church, do we surrender to it? When we face difficult decisions at work, do we trust God s word? When we face problems at home, do we trust God s word? When we hear of scandals in the community or in the church, do we trust God s word? When we are facing a personal crisis, do we trust God s word? The Annunciation is not only the historical beginning of the Incarnation; it calls us to a way of living by God s word. The definition of a saint is not one who experiences supernatural phenomenon, but one who trusts God s word and submits to it. Our Yes to God is the moment in any life when a person becomes a saint. Peace,

As we remember the passion and death of Jesus during this Lenten Season, we join with people in our churches and all over the world whose lives are dramatically changed because of violence. If you have lost a loved one or friend to any kind of violence (murder, suicide, war, accident, etc.), please bring a picture which will be placed in the sanctuary during the service. We also will pray in a special way for first responders to violence, such as law enforcement, emergency room and other medical staff, etc. For more information, contact Deacon John De Gano with St. Catherine s Ministry of Social Concerns at (951) 781-9855, ext. 11, or Sister Sue Reif, OSF, Diocesan Director of Restorative Justice: (909) 475-5474 or serif@sbdiocese.org. Thank you for your generosity. May God bless you. Gracias por su generosidad. Dios los bendiga! Eucharistic Notes from Your SFDS Perpetual Adoration Chapel Since exercise, eating, sleeping, work and prayer life are mostly accomplished by habit, it s important for healthy living to develop good habits. Good habits of daily prayer, frequent confession & communion speed us to spiritual maturity. Committing to a weekly hour of visits to our Perpetual Adoration Chapel is one of the most powerful and fruitful spiritual habits. You are invited. He is awaiting your visit. Please sign the Adorer Schedule Visitors page. The times and days Adorers are especially needed are posted on the bulletin boards or pick your favorite hour/day by looking at the pages & contacting the Coordinator listed at the bottom of the page. There should be two regular Adorers listed for each hour of each 24-hour day. Just a Friendly Reminder. All Building Fund envelopes are to be used separately from the regular weekly donation envelopes. Checks should also be written separately from your regular weekly donation. Although we have included these Building Fund envelopes in the weekly donation envelopes, the Building Fund donations are considered a separate fund. Please make note of this in the future for next month. We greatly appreciate your generosity for all you have done and continue to do for our Parish. May God bless you. STEWARDSHIP GIVING PRAYER Good and gracious God, we thank you for all we are and all we have. Everything is a gift from your infinite generosity. We marvel at how bountiful is your kindness. We rest in appreciation of your enduring mercy. As we explore our responsibility to be good stewards, fill us with the compassion of Jesus, your Son. Give us eyes to see the needs of those around us, in the faces of our neighbors near and far. Give us hearts that are moved by the pleas of those who cry out - on behalf of the children, the refugees, the sick and the suffering. Give us hands that are eager to share what has been entrusted to us. Give us feet to venture wherever the Spirit leads for the mission to bring your Good News to all. As we resolve to be mindful of the needs of others, we pray that You instill in us your generosity, your kindness and your mercy. Keep us focused in our mission of good stewardship. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Third Sunday of Lent Page 6 March 23, 2014 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Especially during the Lent and Easter seasons, we are very conscious of the communal nature of baptism. We stand witness to the baptism of adults at the Easter Vigil in many parishes and countless parishes celebrate festive baptisms for infants. The rule for celebrating baptism is that it be only once a day in any parish church, a sign of the Church s desire that baptism be the work of the gathered community. Private baptism is therefore a misnomer, since all baptisms, even emergency baptisms for infants in danger of death, are a public act of entrance in to the Body of Christ, the Church. In an emergency and providing the parents desire it, anyone can baptize by pouring water and saying, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. But then afterward the Church is encouraged to supply what is missing: the gathered assembly to proclaim and hear God s word, the promises, the naming, the anointing, the clothing with a white garment, the candle, the Lord s Prayer and the solemn blessing of the parents at the altar. Wonderfully, this ritual often provides the opportunity for great rejoicing at the recovery of an infant who had been in danger. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
