LIFE ACCORDING THE SPIRIT

INTRODUCTION How To Kill Sin, Part 1 (Romans 8:1-4) Attention-getter Be killing sin or sin will be killing you. Let s think about that for a moment and then we ll pray. Be killing sin or sin will be killing you. That s how John Owen summarized Romans 8:13 which is the last verse we just read: If you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Paul says something similar in Colossians 3:5-6 (ESV) [explain footnote in NASB]: Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. Jesus also uses radical language in relation to dealing with our sin. He says in Matthew 5:29: If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it away; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. Motivation for listening The Bible teaches that the basis of our salvation is God s grace through faith in the death of Jesus Christ for our sins, NOT our obedience. BUT the Bible also teaches that the fruit of obedience is the evidence of our salvation and failing to fight sin can lead us to shipwreck our faith. Paul says to Timothy: This charge I entrust to you, Timothy... that you wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith (1 Timothy 1:18-19). We must, therefore, learn how to fight and kill sin, lest we drift away from God. I ve personally witnessed this in the life of a friend from college. You may know others who have left the faith. And even if our faith today is strong and healthy, let each of us take heed lest we fall. Motivation for preaching So for the next two weeks, today and next week, Pastor Nick and I are preaching on how to kill sin. Our prayer is that these two sermons will help you not only avoid being killed by sin, but even better, how to grow in holiness. [LET S PRAY.]

Proposition Main idea: In order to truly kill sin, we must WAGE WAR against sin with the weapons of the gospel. If we wage war against sin in the wrong way, we will either succeed and become a proud and selfrighteous person, or we will fail and despair that our faith is dysfunctional. Define the terms The phrase to kill sin is just another way of saying, Put to death the deeds of the body as Paul says in Romans 8:13. Sometimes I ll say the mortification of sin which is the same thing and comes from the way the King James Version translates the verb put to death in Colossians 3:5. The phrase wage war is just another way of saying fight the good fight of faith as Paul says in 1 Timothy 6:12 and 2 Timothy 4:7. It is called the good fight is because it s not a fight against other people. The good fight is fighting against our own sin and unbelief towards God or anything within our own soul that would make us rude or grouchy or cruel towards other people. Organizational Sentence The outline of this sermon is simple: 5 observations on Romans 8:1-4. We will be focusing on Romans 8:1-4, but the context before and after is critical to understanding its meaning. BODY Point 1 The Divine Verdict is Victory The most astonishing thing to see in the passage Tim just read as it pertains to our daily battle against sin is NOT Romans 8:1. Yes, Romans 8:1 is a glorious truth of the gospel, but in regards to our daily battle against sin, the most astonishing thing to see is the context in which Paul says it. What s the context? Let s re-read what the Apostle Paul says a couple verses before he said There is now no condemnation (starting in verse 18 of Romans 7): I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me to do good, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

In this passage, Paul is describing his ongoing battle with sin. He has the willingness to do what is right, but he finds himself doing what is evil. Paul is NOT describing his experience prior to becoming a Christian. This is Paul s description of his battle against sin as a believer. We know this for at least 3 reasons, but at the moment notice that he says, I practice the very evil that I do not want. Unbelievers do not typically admit that their deeds are evil, or sinful. Jesus teaches us in John 16:8 that only the Holy Spirit can convict us of sin so that we recognize it as being evil in the eyes of God. Furthermore, even if some unbelievers are in tune enough with the law of God written on their heart, they will rarely say after they have sinned: I hate what I just did. The testimony of Pastor Jack Miller who met with many of the worst criminals in southern California says that most felt no remorse for their actions at all and often self-justified their actions. It is unlikely, therefore, that Paul is describing his battle with sin prior to becoming a Christian. Rather, Paul is describing his hopeless battle against sin without the help of the Holy Spirit! Now that we see the context, let s read Romans 8:1 again: Therefore, there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. This is astonishing! Despite Paul s ongoing battle with sin, Paul is able to say, I am free from condemnation! Let me tell you, it is a powerful weapon in the heat of the battle against sin to be able to say: My right standing with God is not based on my performance, because Christ is my righteousness and there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. But someone might say, Chris, you didn t finish Paul s train of thought; if you keep reading, he changes his tone before getting to the point about no condemnation. To which I say, Good question. So let s keep reading (starting in verse 21): I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! See, Chris, as much as it is a wonderful thought that Paul is rejoicing in his freedom from condemnation despite his ongoing battle against sin that s not what Paul is really trying to say. Paul asks the question, Who will set me free from this body of death, and THEN he responds by saying, Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ! So you see, Chris, Paul has changed his tone and has moved

on from his battle with sin and is NOW exulting in his deliverance from his slavery to sin; and that s why he has the boldness to say, There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus! To which I say, Hogwash! If Paul had said Thanks be to God, and then immediately jumped to, Therefore, there is now no condemnation... Paul s train of thought would be less clear. However, that s NOT what Paul does. What DOES Paul do before rejoicing in his peace with God? He reverts back and summarizes his battle with sin all over again. Let s read together once again (this time starting in verse 24): Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. It is absolutely CRITICAL you notice how Paul summarizes his ongoing battle with sin BEFORE he says no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1 must be read in context of Romans 7:25. And the significance is this: YOUR STRUGGLE WITH SIN IS NORMAL. It was for the Apostle! It makes absolutely no sense for Paul to RE-SUMMARIZE his ongoing battle with sin after breaking into a victorious doxology ( Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ! ), except to demonstrate that our battle with sin does not jeopardize and should not shake our confidence in our justification. Rather, our justification is based on our being in Christ Jesus through faith. Let me paraphrase the glory of Romans 7:14 through Romans 8:1 in this way: Even though I m a sinner, and even though I know nothing good exists in me apart from Christ, and even though I sometimes feel like I m in a losing battle with sin, I am FREE from condemnation because I am in Christ Jesus. This is the gospel! And the truth of the gospel will strengthen us in the fight of faith. Point 1: THE DIVINE VERDICT IS VICTORY IN CHRIST JESUS, and the application is to believe the gospel. Point 2 - The Divine Power Behind Our Victory Is the Law of the Spirit of Life The second point is very simply this: The divine power behind our victory is the Law of the Spirit of Life. Let s look at Romans 8:1-2: Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

These verses teach a spiritual law (think of it as a rule or spiritual principle); namely, that possessing the Spirit of God is the ultimate determining factor in your position before God. The principle goes like this: If you are in Christ Jesus, then the Spirit of God (or the Spirit of Life) is in you, and if the Spirit of Life is in you, then He has set you free from sin and death which results in condemnation. To make this concept of the Law of the Spirit more clear, let me share a few things: 1) The aorist indicative has set free is always a one-time event in the past 2) See how this one-time-ness is seen more clearly in Romans 6:10 3) Expungement process (illustrates an earthly one-time even that in the past that can help first time offenders be set free from a stained background check as they seek a job. Be careful to notice, however, that this Law or principle of life applies only to those who are in Christ Jesus. Paul says uses the phrase in Christ Jesus two times. And in the second half of verse 9 he says: If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If you are in Christ Jesus, you should take great comfort that your past, present, and future sins will not result in condemnation, because the principle of the Spirit of Life is at work in you, and it has already set you free from the Law of sin which leads to death. However, you cannot claim this promise of victory over condemnation if you do have the Spirit of Christ, because anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. So you should ask yourself: Do I have the Spirit of Christ? If you are not sure, test yourself from what we ve read so far. First test question: Do you hate sin? Look again at Romans 7:15. Paul says: For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. It is unlikely you hate sin unless the Spirit of Christ is in you. This was the first reason why I said Paul s experience at the end of Romans 7 is his experience as a believer, not prior to his conversion. Second question: Do you love God s Word? Look at Romans 7:22: I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man.

It is unlikely you are able to rejoice in the law of God in your heart unless the Spirit of Christ is in you. This is the second reason why I believe Paul is describing his experience as a believer in his battle against sin. He is able to say that he joyfully concurs with the law of God. It s one thing to intellectually agree that God s law is good and right, but it s quite another to rejoice in it. Do you find yourself rejoicing as you listen to God s Word, or is it a drag? Do you find yourself getting excited about reading and studying God s Word, or are you bored with God? Question Three: Do you lament your sinful nature from time to time? Do you long for deliverance from sin with all your heart? Look at Romans 7:24: Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? It is unlikely you lament your vileness and long to be set free from sin unless the Spirit of Christ dwells in you. This is the third (and fourth) reason why I believe Paul is describing his experience as a believer in his battle against sin. He is disgusted with his sin, saying, "Wretched man that I am!" And then he cries out for deliverance: Who will deliver me from this body of death! Now be careful here: It s possible to want to be set free from sin for the wrong reasons, such as simply because it troubles you or keeps you from doing the things you want to do. It s another thing to long to be delivered from sin because you love God, and because you don't want to offend the one you love! Point 2: THE DIVINE POWER BEHIND OUR VICTORY IS THE HOLY SPIRIT, and the application is to recognize the Spirit of God at work within you. If you are in Christ Jesus, you can boldly continue in the fight the fight of faith no matter how intense it may be, because ultimately, the Spirit of God within you has already won the battle over sin and death. Point 3 - The Divine Means of Our Victory Is the Life & Death of Christ (his performance, not ours) Point #3: the Divine means of our victory over sin and condemnation is the life and death of Christ. In other words, his performance, not ours! Let s read Romans 8:3: For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh. Paul clearly explains what he has been preparing to say all along; namely, God did for us what we could not do for ourselves: sending His Son for our sins, God the Father condemned our sins in Christ s flesh.

In other words, the main emphasis of the gospel is not what we do, but what God has done for us. The same is true for Paul in this passage. Before he affirms the purpose of the gospel is that the Law might be fulfilled in us, Paul affirms that God has already redeemed us from the curse of the Law by condemning our sins in Christ, so that we are not condemned for our sins. Application: we too should focus first on what God has done for us, not what we can do for God. Point 4 - The Divine Purpose of Our Victory Is That We Would Live in Obedience to God's Word Point #4: The divine purpose of our victory is that we would obey God s Word. Romans 8:4a: So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us. Although its true the main emphasis in the gospel is what God has done for us, that does not mean we don t have any role or proper response. God s purpose in His great salvation is that we would obey His Word from the heart and fulfill the requirement of the law to love God and our neighbor. Therefore, we must be careful to not become at peace with our sin! For example, if you struggle with being an overly critical person, are you going to war against your critical spirit? If you struggle with over-eating, are you going to war against your gluttonous desires? If you struggle with lust, are you going to WAR against the out of control desires of your heart? As John Owen also said, We will not be making progress in holiness without walking over the bellies of our lusts. When I hear that quote I think of the story of David and Goliath. In the same way that Goliath defied the God of Israel, so our indwelling sin rebels against God. And I picture in my mind young David standing over the belly of Goliath and picking up Goliath s heavy sword and cutting off his head. That s the kind of defiance towards sin Romans 8:13 is talking about. We need to kill it! One more observation on verse 3: this exhortation to fulfill the law does not mean perfection. The Bible teaches if we ever claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Therefore, gospel weapon #4 is to not become overly discouraged. The kind of obedience Paul is talking about is qualitative in nature, not qualitative and infinitely quantitative also (impossible).

At this point, however, we should again be careful. As John Owen says in his book, You will not be able to mortify a specific lust that is troubling you unless you are seeking to obey the Lord from the heart in all areas. Suppose a married Christian man is committing emotional adultery with another woman who he sees regularly at work. And suppose this same man has fallen into the slavery of stealing from his work by cooking the books. And suppose this man is troubled by his slavery to sin because he can t stop stealing; the lust of greed has taken him captive. Sooner or later, he fears he will be caught and fired from his job. If that man decides to oppose his sin with all his might, and pray against it, and plead with God for deliverance, but at the same time is unwilling to repent of his romantic relationship with his lady friend at work, God will not give him the victory. We should also be careful not to pursue mortification of sin in such a way that, Has the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence [sin]. Colossians 2:23 This kind of self-made mortification of sin often leads to legalism or a spirit of self-righteousness. In the battle against sin, if we begin to think or act as though our obedience is a means of maintaining our right standing before God, we have turned the gospel into a works-righteousness religion. We must continually renew our faith and trust in Christ and His work on the cross on our behalf. Point 4: THE DIVINE PURPOSE OF OUR VICTORY IS OBEDIENCE TO GOD S WORD, and the application is to fight the fight of faith, but not in our own strength. Which brings us to the final observation because it instructs us in the only right way to mortify sin: Point 5 - The Human Means for Living in Obedience to God's Word Is Learning to Walk by the Spirit Point #5: The human means for living in obedience to God s Word is learning to walk by the Spirit. Romans 8:4: So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. This phrase walk according to the Spirit means to walk in the power the Holy Spirit. This is extremely encouraging, is it not? God does not leave us to ourselves in the fight against sin! In your battle against the sin, gospel weapon #5 is to look to GOD to do what He has promised to do; namely, to send His Spirit to empower you to obey! His Word is FILLED with promises to do so:

1) I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My commandments (Eze. 36:26-28). 2) Jeremiah 31:33: This is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord, I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 3) Or as Jesus said to His disciples, And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever (John 14:16). If we seek to kill sin through any means other than dependence on the Spirit of God, we will miss the mark: In order to truly kill sin, we must wage war against sin with the weapons of the gospel, and the greatest of these is trusting God to give you His Holy Spirit as you cry out to Him for deliverance. CONCLUSION Summary So we have seen today 5 observations and 5 gospel weapons from Romans 8:1-4: 1) The Divine verdict is victory over sin and condemnation; therefore believe in the truth of the gospel! 2) The Divine power behind our victory is the law of the Spirit of Life; recognize it s a done deal 3) The Divine means of our victory was the life & death of Christ; focus on what God has done for you 4) The Divine purpose of our victory is a life of obedience to God s Word; fight the good fight 5) The human means for living in obedience to God s Word is walking by the Spirit; He will provide Re-motivation Brothers and sisters, let us not be fooled by the deceitfulness of sin. When sin seems to be leaving us alone, it is only the calm before the storm. We should therefore always be on alert not only against the schemes of the enemy but even more so the schemes of the enemy within our own souls. Closure But for those who are in Christ Jesus, even when we fall, we can surely say, There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, for the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death." [Let s pray]
