THE GLORY THAT MAKES US ONE Cecil ducille And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one (John 17:22). The Lord s reference here to the glory speaks of a specific thing that the Father gave Him, and which in itself is a cohesive force to weld His Body together. This alerts us that our efforts to join and to have large numbers of God s sheep in our pastures should rather be directed to the getting of this glory which God gives. What then is this glory? It is imperative that we understand the meaning of the words which Jesus Christ used, so let us go to the Scriptures for the understanding of what our Lord Jesus Christ received from the Father and what He gave to us. Exodus 16:10, And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. It is safe to say here that the Israelites saw a bright light in the cloud. From this cloud came the voice of God to them and there was no doubt within the minds of those who saw and heard that they were listening to God Almighty. Accompanying this voice from the cloud was an awesome power, which so frightened the people that they asked Moses (Exodus 20:18-19) to ask God not to speak to them any more, but to speak to Him for them. And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. What they experienced here of God s glory created an immediate repentance among them, and they there determined that they would obey the Word of God. Of course, once the terror of God s presence departed, they never kept the promise. http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 1 of 7

Exodus 24:15-17 shows us another instance in which the glory of God appeared: And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount. And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. How would one describe devouring fire? It was not a lazy fire burning at leisure, but an energetic fire; more like one that burns from gasoline or some other fuel, with the exception that nothing was being consumed or destroyed. The effect of the appearance of this glory was evident in the attitude that it would create in Israel after its appearance....and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do, (Exodus 24:3). As we read these passages, one of the things which is immediately evident is that every time the glory appeared, the cloud appeared; and the glory was the visual presence of the Lord. It was also evident that the cloud was shielding the natural from being destroyed by the power of the presence of God. We believe that both man and beast, and all the natural elements cannot face the presence of God and survive. However, in this chapter, Moses was not hurt, neither were the seventy elders of Israel, the people of Israel, the animals, the trees, or the rocks. God has covenanted with us to walk in us and to talk in us and to be our God, and that we would be His people. One of the unwritten promises of God is that He will not destroy us physically in order to do this. We know that this operation will occur in the physical man, and the paternal care that God has taken to cover Himself (in what the Scriptures call thick darkness ) is something that is designed to save us. He sent Jesus Christ to take on the physical and to be born and live as a man. It was all part of that design to save humanity, and at the same time fill us with His glory presence, which otherwise in the natural dimension would be totally impossible. How could a container contain that which is bigger than the container? How could an earthen vessel contain the Almighty, the power of Whose glory and presence alone would be destructive to the vessel? Mathematics and the laws of physics say that it is not possible, but in the higher dimensions of spiritual laws and understanding it becomes abundantly possible, and experientially true. http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 2 of 7

In Exodus 33, we read of a discussion between God and Moses wherein Moses asks that God go with them, and in Verse 17 the Lord answers, Yes. Then in Verse 18 Moses makes a very strange request: And he (Moses) said, I beseech thee, show me thy glory. This request is considered strange, in particular, because Moses had been up in the mountain with God and had seen of the Lord more than had any other human. The words of this spoken request do not entirely convey what Moses desired from God. He had already seen the burning mountain and he had already seen the finger of God write on tables of stone, so when he spoke of God s glory, what more did he want to see? It is either that Moses was tired of life and wanted to be consumed, or that he really did not realize what he was asking for. In Verses 19-20, the Lord gave an answer that conveys to us a deeper understanding of what is meant by the glory of God: And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. Moses did not ask the Lord to see His face. He asked to see His glory; but the Lord answered and said, You cannot see my face. This means here that face means glory. Now, note the language, which is even more explicit in the original Hebrew where this verse reads: Adam is not able to see My face and live. It did not say that God did not want to show Moses His face, but that Moses, being man, could not look at the face of God and live. This means that the energy of God that shone forth from His face was too much for human eyes to see, and that it would change his whole being from a physical creature to something else. In our effort to understand what the Lord said to Moses, let us look at another scripture that describes God. 1 John 1:5, This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. The purest light known to man is the laser, and yet there is still darkness in it. This light is so powerful that it could punch a hole through thick, heavy steel. Consider then, how terrible it would be for a human being to look upon God, Who is THE Light and of a magnitude so far beyond our scope of comprehension that even the mighty angels of light cannot approach. http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 3 of 7

Let us continue with this story of Moses with God in Exodus 33, starting with Verse 21. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock. And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by. And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen. I would not be surprised if that hand which covered Moses did not have in it the mark of a nail. Moses must have seen the back of Yeshua the Messiah, and that encounter with God brought a satisfaction to the desire in Moses to see the Lord face to face. There is a yearning in man for God, to know Him, not just in a nominal sense (as Savior, as Lord and King), but as being united in a oneness with Him, and to become that glory which we behold. Exodus 40:33-38, And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work. THEN A CLOUD COVERED THE TENT OF THE CONGREGATION, AND THE GLORY OF THE LORD FILLED THE TABERNACLE. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys. But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. When the tabernacle of Moses was finished and they had accomplished to do all that the Lord commanded, the glory of God appeared and was seen to the naked eye as a burning fire, and a cloud also appeared, apparently to shield the onlookers from harm. We read (in 2 Chronicles 5:14, 7:1) that the same thing occurred when Solomon completed the temple: the glory of God appeared in a cloud, the fire came down on the altar, and the priest could not stand to minister. At Pentecost, there were tongues of fire on the heads of the believers, even as God the Holy Ghost entered into the human temple and spoke from within the cloud, which is our flesh. From the example of scripture, we see that it is the will of God to dwell in a temple. The Lord told Solomon that He would not dwell in temples made with human hands, and He has revealed to us that we are the temple of the Living God: http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 4 of 7

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? FOR YE ARE THE TEMPLE OF THE LIVING GOD; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people (2 Corinthians 6:16). The Apostle Paul, endued by the Holy Ghost, wrote thus: But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory (2 Corinthians 3:7-9). The glory of God got into Moses so that his face shone and the people could not look at him, so that he had to cover his face with a cloth when he talked to them. Here we learn the reason why God covers Himself with a cloud. Moses, therefore, showed forth a type of what God intended to do in us. God knows and sees the beginning and the end of all things, therefore at our beginning and in our present lowly state, God can afford to laugh in spite of our grave and sometimes horrible condition. It is a marvelous and beautiful thought that in the mind of God, the beginning and the end of every matter stands before Him and is open to His scrutiny. He saw Adam, the perfected man, and therefore, Adam, the fallen man, was not a defeat but a victory. Moses could not look upon the glory, but in the fullness of time God manifested that glory to us in this dispensation. John 1:14, And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth. It is necessary, right here, to identify the glory. IT IS THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST, OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. Let us take note of John 17:5: And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. In order to save man, Christ had to lay down the glory that He had with the Father before the world was. There was one time on the Mount of Transfiguration when Christ burst forth from the body of Jesus and the disciples saw the glory cloud as it shone through his body. They heard the Father speak from within the glory cloud that also enveloped Moses and Elias. http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 5 of 7

But this verse in John 17 shows that even the great power we saw manifested in Jesus Christ while He was in His human body was not the power which He had with the Father before the world was, but much less. Let us again look at John 17:22, in which He bequeathed to us, not the glory of the Christ in the mortal body of Jesus, but the glory of the pre-existent Christ, which He had with the Father before the world was made. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one. Our oneness in Christ exceeds all human union, so then, what is this glory which He has given us? And if it is given, is it received? THE GLORY IS CHRIST. Christ stands at the apex of a pyramid, and we are all at different points along its side. As we progress towards Him, we also come closer to each other, but it is the oneness of purpose that brings us closer to Him and to each other. The glory, then, that we seek is Christ. How do we get Christ? It is one of those simple, yet hard answers: WE GET CHRIST BY BEING IN OBEDIENCE TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. Of course, we cannot be obedient to someone whom we cannot hear, and we can only hear by the Word of God. Our first action, then, must be a tacit determination to believe the Word of God and to obey it without reservation. Some of us believe this part and that part, but not the other. When this happens, we instinctively seek other interpretations for the Word and invariably we fall into error; and once we are in error, we cannot hear the Word of God clearly and we cannot act correctly, thus we miss the glory that was given and we cannot be one with those with whom we should be one. Let us look at the ending of this prayer: John 17:24-26, Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovest me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. The key in this prayer is expressed in the fact that Jesus is saying that we will have this glory in the natural and not just when we are dead. He is praying not for a glory to come where He will be, but where I am. In Chapter 14, Jesus explains that He is going to the Father, and that He will come again and receive us unto Himself, that where I am, there ye may be also. God s http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 6 of 7

plan for us is that Christ Jesus, Who is with us now, should bring us into the place where He is with the Father. He moved out of the place on earth and the Word declares in Hebrews 2:10 that He will bring many sons to glory. The time is close when we will come into this glory. Pray that you do not miss it, as the scribes and Pharisees did when Jesus first appeared. May the Lord richly bless you, and may this little message be a blessing to you and yours. http://sonlightdevotional.org/ 7 of 7
