1 Sunday, December 10, 2017 - Second Sunday of Advent THE ROAD TO CHRISTMAS PEACE: On a pastoral level, the gift of the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession can be an extraordinary and graced way for preparing the way of the Lord. If Christmas peace is to embrace our world, the gift of Christ s peace must first invade the individual world of our own lives. Think and pray about giving yourself this gift of Christmas peace, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation a most basic way to prepare the way of the Lord. Weekly Reconciliation/Confession times are every Wednesday from 6-6:25pm and Saturday from 4-5pm and from 7-7:30pm. There will be a pre-christmas Communal Penance Service next Sunday, December 17th at 7:30pm. Final sessions on Monday, December 18th (9am); Tuesday, December 19th (7am); Wednesday, December 20th (6pm); Thursday, December 21st (4pm 5pm, and 7pm-8pm); Friday, December 22nd (4pm-5pm, and 7pm 8pm). See neighboring parishes schedule on page 2 of this bulletin. ALTERNATE SPIRITUAL GIFTS FOR CHRISTMAS: The advertising world and the shopping malls are bombarding us with a multiplicity of options on so many ideal Christmas gifts. This intense bombardment and the overwhelming emphasis on material gifts tend to sidetrack and minimize the essential spiritual focus of Christmas. In the oversell pressures from the commercial world, it can be a challenge to purchase and exchange gifts out of a real motivation of love because of unrealistic expectations. During these next few weeks, preparation for Christmas for many people will mean purchasing and exchanging gifts, and in some instances, unnecessary, and even meaningless gifts for family and friends. Consider offering some alternate spiritual gifts to family and friends. Spiritual Gift Offerings: Consider offering the gift of an hour of prayer in the Cenacle Chapel for family and friends, during the weekly exposition times; or opt to come to a daily Mass during Advent for family and friends. Special holy hour acknowledgement cards are available in the Cenacle Chapel and special Mass cards are available in the vestibule of the church. See related article on Source and Summit. Meaningful Gifts Sharing: The Angel Trees in the vestibule of the church are marvelous ways for so many of our parishioners to share meaningful gifts with the poor and the needy. When we recognize Jesus in the least among us, we acknowledge the ongoing mystery of the incarnation God among us. We can maintain the true spiritual meaning of Christmas by offering an hour of prayer or weekday Advent Mass for others, as well as relating to the Angel Tree outlets. Intentional Prayer & Source & Summit Gifts: For parishioners who would make that intentional prayer effort and who would like to communicate it to those for whom they have offered an Advent Mass, the following message (available on cardstock in the vestibule) may be sent to them. It can be included with a Christmas card or sent separately. The text of the card reads as follows: Christmas Gift Source and Summit: The Mass in our Catholic Practice is the source and summit of God s unconditional saving love for us in Jesus. I offered an Advent Mass especially for your intentions and this offering for you, becomes a special spiritual Christmas gift to you. May the Lord richly bless you through the source and summit of His amazing presence with us in the table of His Word and the table of the Living Bread in the Mass. AN ADVENT PRAYER FOR REFLECTION: This might be a helpful prayer for you as you sort your cards and juggle your packages or stand in line at the Post Office between now and Christmas. The prayer: God, our Father, may everything we do be first class. Imprint your own loving zip code upon our hearts so that we may never go astray. Provide in your gracious Providence special handling for those of us who are fragile and keep us in one piece. When our days draw to a close and we are marked return to sender, be there to greet us at heaven s door so that no one there might say unknown at this address. Amen. Come Home PERSONAL INVITATIONS TO ALIENATED CATHOLICS: If you know of a person or persons who are alienated from the Church for whatever reason and who are basically inactive, would you please list their name, address and telephone number for a personal invitation from the parish to the upcoming series? It would be appropriate that you would let the person know that you have submitted their name for this personal invitation from the parish. In doing so, you are becoming their sponsor, praying for their positive response. Inactive/ alienated Catholics who come to the series find it most helpful when their sponsor comes to the first session with them. Do not underestimate the power of this kind of personal invitation and support. When done in faith, it personalizes God s invitation and saving grace. The first session in the After-Christmas series will be Monday, January 8, 2018. Name(s) Address ACA INVITATION/REGISTRATION Please send a personal invitation to the following person(s) to the next ACA series: If there are others, please list them on a separate sheet of paper, attach it to this registration form and return it to: An Invitation, 1800 S. Kolb Road, Tucson, AZ, 85710, place in the collection, or drop it off at the Parish Office. Phone ZIP

2 CTSO GIFT TIME: The CTSO acronym stands for Catholic Tuition Support Organization. Did you know that couples can designate $2,177 of their state income tax or $1,089 for individual filers to help students at Our Mother of Sorrows School? All registered parishioners received a mailing from the parish this week that fully explains how parishioners can designate a portion of their state income tax between now and December 31st to benefit Our Mother of Sorrows School. Brochures with relevant information are available in the vestibule of the church and in the parish and school offices. Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection December 10, 2017 Mark 1:1-8 John the Baptist is a herald s voice Significantly, John the Baptist s promise of one who baptizes with the Spirit is never fulfilled within the parameters of Mark s narrative. In Mark s Gospel, Jesus does not baptize but is instead baptized by John. John s promise of baptism in the Spirit hovers over the Gospel narrative, the first of a series of promises that point beyond the ending of Mark s Gospel. These unfulfilled promises tell us something important about the Gospels. The story of Jesus continues into the future. Mark wants his audience to recognize we are part of the Gospel story. This is the beginning of a story that has not ended and will not until the owner of the house returns. This story is for all people and all times. John s ministry is only a preliminary. He prepares the way for someone far greater. But his role of preparing the way is important. John prepares the way for our hearing of the Gospels this year. He points to all that lies ahead for us. The coming year holds open the promise of one who gives the gift of the Spirit; to revive and forgive, to heal and free. ***In what Advent gatherings or events will you participate this year? How is God present in them? This retreat offers a prayerful opportunity to slow down in the midst of this busy season and reflect on the gracious gifts of Advent. What is offered to us? How might we respond? The Advent and Christmas seasons are a call to see God everywhere, and especially in those places we would not expect to find glory and grace. Give yourself the gift of this retreat as you prepare for the Birth of Jesus don t forget to invite a friend also. Facilitated by Mary Chajewski, Adult Faith Coordinator. PAC Retreat Room.
