Your priests will be taking vacation this summer: Msgr. Thompson - July 1 - July 23 Father Connolly - July 15-29 Father Michael - July 29 - August 12 (Greece Pilgrimage) Sunday July 15 - SUMMER BOOK CLUB The second book option this summer is Archbishop Charles Chaput s Strangers in a Strange Land. Bishop Chaput, the first Native American archbishop, is direct in his analysis of the continuing secularization of the United States, but he also offers suggestions on how an individual can live a faithful Christian life that improves our nation. In the first part of the book he looks at the past and present with an unflinching eye. Yes, there are things to admire about the past, but the past is the past we can only influence the present and the make plans for the future. For example, he brings up the 1982 Tylenol capsule poisonings no one now will buy a product without safety seals. Similar changes in the country s sexual, religious, technological, demographic, and economic fabric make going back impossible. Yet the early Christians did not look at the Roman Empire and simply give up. In a culture that valued power, advancement, and glory, they instead followed Christ by serving others, especially serving those among the lower rungs of society. And by following Christ, they changed the world. They were the leaven that made the dough rise. ST JOSEPH S MEN S GROUP BUNK BEDS We delivered 6 bunk beds June 30th to 4 families. Team Clare went to Brooklyn and included Kurt Kish, Steve Broussard, Pat Moore and Dennis McCormack. Team Francis included Larry Trank, from the Men s Group, who delivered beds in the Bronx (that had the floor issue) and Manhattan. We were accompanied by CYFM staff and Capuchin Outreach Program participants along with Sister Elizabeth and Sr. Mary Grace from the Sisters of Life down in Brooklyn. There was one family in Brooklyn that received 3 beds. Betty has 7 children and they were all there today. There were literally kids everywhere and we got lots of help. All great stuff. The 7 kids lit up when we walked in with new blankets from St. Columba Rosary Altar Society! It took us 2 hours to set up the three beds. Betty and her family are deeply grateful for the new beds.

We encourage all Catholic families to continue, as much as possible, to follow the traditional practice of the Catholic Funeral rites - a Wake Service, a Funeral Mass and Burial in a cemetery. These Rites can and should be offered for all Catholics, those who practice their faith and those who did not. We are aware that this may not be practical for all. Please contact a parish priest if you have any questions. One of the blessings of offering the Catholic Funeral Rites is that it gives people various opportunities to visit, to share condolences and to pray for the deceased and their family. On occasion, a person has requested cremation after death. If at all possible, please try to delay cremation until after the Funeral Mass. If this is not possible, we are still able to offer a Funeral Mass for the deceased. Afterward, please ensure that the cremated remains are properly buried in a sacred place such as a cemetery or placed in a columbarium. Please do not: -Keep cremated remains in a domestic residence or at home -Distribute cremated remains among family members -Scatter cremated remains in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way -Preserve cremated remains as mementos in pieces of jewelry or other objects While we try to accommodate all reasonable requests for days and times for Funerals, we ask you not to make any plans until you have met with a Funeral Director, who, in turn, will contact us regarding availability. HOSPITAL VISITS & ANOINTING OF THE SICK If you are having a planned procedure or surgery and would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, simply let a priest know before or after any Weekday or Weekend Mass. He will be delighted to pray with you. If you find yourself in a local hospital, simply contact the Hospital Pastoral Care Dept. and they will arrange for the Priest Chaplain on call to Anoint you or your loved ones. If you would like a priest from St. Columba to visit you in the hospital, please call the church office. Due to privacy laws, this information is not available to us, so we must rely upon you to call us. If the church office is closed and it is an emergency, please call the church office number, listen to the prompts and you will be connected directly to a priest on duty. If he does not pick up right away, clearly record your name and phone number, and you will be called back as soon as possible.
