2018-2019 3 rd grade Required Reading List They must choose one book from each section. Please make sure that your child fills out the required book report form for BOTH books. The book reports will be your child s first 2 grades of the school year, so please make sure they are turned in on the FIRST day of school. The fiction book is turned into Mrs. Carden the language arts teacher and the biography is turned into Miss Wiggins, the science and social studies teacher. There will be 11 points taken off for each day late. Choose ONE of the two Realistic Fiction books below: Jake Drake Bully Buster by Andrew Clements When Jake was three years old at Miss Lulu's Dainty Diaper Day Care Center, what did he know about bullies? Nothing. But he learned fast! Why? Because Jake was kind of smart and not a tattletale, and he had no big brother to protect him. He was a perfect bully magnet. But everything changed the year Jake was in second grade. That's when SuperBully Link Baxter moved to town. Jake had his hands full just trying to survive, until class project time. Who did the teacher assign to be Link's partner? You guessed it. Clementine by Sara Pennypacker Clementine is having not so good of a week. On Monday she's sent to the principal's office for cutting off Margaret's hair. Tuesday, Margaret's mother is mad at her. Wednesday, she's sent to the principal again. Thursday, Margaret stops speaking to her. Friday starts with yucky eggs and gets worse. And by Saturday, even her mother is mad at her. Okay, fine. Clementine is having a DISASTROUS week. Read the biography listed below: Who Was Rosa Parks? by Yona Zeldis McDonough In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama. This seemingly small act triggered civil rights protests across America and earned Rosa Parks the title "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement." This biography has black-and-white illustrations throughout. Book synopsis s from amazon.com

Who Was Rosa Parks? Book Report Directions: This book report is meant to be filled out as you are reading the book. Parents, please sit down with your child as he/she fills this out. I really want good discussions to come out of your child reading this book. Rosa Parks is one of the first people we talk about when discussing being a good citizen in social studies. Thank you! The * means to answer the question in a complete sentence. The aim in writing is always to write in complete sentences which are correctly punctuated. Sentences always begin with a capital letter and end in either a full stop, exclamation or question mark. A complete sentence always contains a verb, expresses a complete idea and makes sense standing alone. My trick to help is to get rid of the question word and then try to use as many words in the question in the answer. For example. Where did Rosa Parks live in 1919? Rosa Parks lived in Pine Level Alabama in 1919. How old was Rosa when she made a stand on the bus? Rosa was 42 when she made a stand on the bus. In my class (science/ social studies) we write in complete sentences all year so I really want the kids to get practice this summer. Parents, thanks in advance for sitting down and helping your child with this book report. This book report needs to be turned into me (Miss Wiggins) on the first day of school. Each day late will be an additional -11pts off. Thank you so much and I can t wait to teach your little ones next year!!! Miss Wiggins
