The same man, who a short time ago denied even knowing Jesus and who stumbled frequently during Jesus ministry, quickly comes to such depth of faith and conviction that despite opposition and persecution, he repeatedly proclaims Jesus as Messiah. At the time of today s reading, Peter begins to open himself to Paul s missionary activity among the Gentiles. Acts, written by Luke, unfolds the story of the early church. Luke cites Peter s strong emphasis on witness, that all disciples are to witness to the Risen Lord. Our second brief reading comes from Colossians. Paul did not found the church in Colossae, but was clearly concerned for their faithful understanding of the gospel. The founder of this church, Epaphras, reported to Paul that other teachers had misled some members of the church into deviant beliefs. He emphasizes that those who are baptized into Christ must be radically changed. For those who choose to die to a former way of life and share in life with Christ in God, all is changed; life must be lived differently until Christ appears again in glory. Although resurrection accounts differ, all four name Mary Magdalene as the first to whom Jesus appears. John begins by noting that Mary comes while it is still dark, a strong symbol in John as he contrasts light and darkness with faith and sin. The Beloved Disciple saw and believed. For John believing is the ultimate goal of any encounter with Jesus. The unnamed beloved disciple seems to embody the ideal follower: one whom Jesus loves, one who enjoys intimacy with Jesus, one who believes in Jesus. What John is emphasizing is that the beloved disciple believes even though he doesn t understand. The parish office will be closed on Easter Monday, April 17. Normal office hours will resume on Tuesday, April 18.

From the Pastor s Desk continued A new study by CARA (Center for Applied Study in the Apostolate) reveals some rather startling figures in terms of young people and faith. The report shows a sharp increase in the nones, people who profess no faith whatsoever. This religiously unaffiliated group grew from just over 16% of the US adult population in 2007 to 22.8% in 2014. Nearly 80% of those who now identify themselves as either atheist, agnostic or nothing in particular say they were raised in an organized religion. The report shows that Catholics had the largest increase in nones among all Christian denomination. At the same time, the median age of Catholic adults grew from 45 to 49 between 2007 and 2014. Thus, Catholics are aging while the nones are expanding their ranks among the young. In exploring the root causes of all of this, the study reveals a complete loss of faith as the cause. A startling number (23%) say they lost their faith by the age of 10! Another revealing statistic in the study shows that of Catholics born before 1961, 23% had never been enrolled in a Catholic school or religious education program. Of those born in 1982 or later, 42% have never been enrolled in a Catholic school or religious education program. If you think our diocese is undergoing dramatic change, the Diocese of Essen, Germany has seen the number of Catholics decline from 1.4 million in 1957 to 791,000 today, in part because of a decline in the steel industry. Over 200 parishes have closed, with the number of parishes falling from 259 to 43. The German bishops have published guidelines allowing, in certain cases, for divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion. They note that each case is to be determined individually. During the month of January, our Food Pantry served 577 families with a total of 2,007 people. We distributed 15,187 pounds of food at a cost to the parish of $1,601.41. Thank you again for your generosity in supporting this undertaking. For years pilgrims have traveled to a remote site in Bosnia because of reported visions of the Blessed Mother. Some of the young people who supposedly received these visions have even spoken at churches in Erie. Pope Francis recently appointed a Polish archbishop to go there and study the supposed apparitions. While the delegate has not yet reported his findings, Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar-Duvno, in whose diocese Medjugorje is located, has issued a public statement saying there have been no apparitions of Our Lady in Medjugorje; Bishop Zanic said the supposed apparitions now total 47,000!! He noted that the supposed Mary in the visions obeys the visionaries, she comes down from the hill into the church even against her will and allows some of the visionaries to touch her. He notes that all of this is inconsistent with authentic visions of Mary. A 2013 ruling from the Vatican Congregation for Doctrine said the faithful are not permitted to participate in meetings, conferences or public celebrations during which the credibility of such apparitions would be taken for granted. St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA invested $15,000 in 2012 in Snap Chat stock. They recently sold two-thirds of their shares for $24 million!!!!! A recent study reveals that the birth rate in Europe has declined from 2.6 in 1960 to 1.5 in 2014. In Eastern Europe the problem has been exacerbated by emigration as young people head west seeking jobs in Germany or Britain, leaving many villages with no inhabitants under the age of 40. In Italy, for example, there are only 3 working people to support old-age pensioners. Thank you for your generous response to the Catholic Services Appeal. If you have not yet made a pledge, could I ask that you consider doing so that we might meet our goal of $100,000. Sister Mary Andrew was teaching her first grade class about what they had to do to go to heaven. If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale, and gave all my money to the church would I get into heaven? she ask the children. No! all of them answered. If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard and kept everything neat and tidy, would I get into heaven? NO, they answered. Well, continued Sister, then how do I get to heaven? A five year old boy shouted, You gotta be dead!

MARRIAGE MOMENTS Easter. The resurrection of Jesus which we celebrate on Easter was a pretty hard story for the women and apostles to believe. Today, we believe in the testimony of others and thousands of years of retelling the story. Unconditional love is so hard to believe. Believe your spouse s love anyway. A Family Perspective Easter Sunday Today s gospel tells us that several arrived to discover the tomb in which Jesus was buried was now empty. What does an empty tomb mean for your family? Failure, loss, defeat? Or victory, life and resurrection? Scripture says that he had to rise from the dead. Families, too, must rise above disappointments and be Easter people all year long.

153 DAYS TO THE 2017 ERIE IRISH FESTIVAL HAPPY EASTER! Well, it s really 152 days and 17 hours, but who s counting? For us Catholics, Easter is the real beginning of Spring--so what better time to reflect on where we are and what we ve done so far. For those of you who wintered in Florida or just weren t paying all that much attention, here s what we did over the last couple of months: Jewelry Collection: We took St. Valentine s Day as an opportunity for you to show your generosity by donating gently used and previously loved jewelry for Patty Dailey s Festival Jewelry Sale. Many, many of you did and for that we thank you. For those of you who did not, you may still drop off your jewelry at the gift shop before or after any mass. Last year we made about $3,000 from your donations, so it s a big deal. Whiskey Collection: We took St. Patrick s Day as an opportunity for you to show your generosity by donating your gently unused Irish whiskey for Chuck Agresti and Ron Brown s Festival Whiskey Bar. Many of you did and we thank you. But, there are many more of you who can still donate. Same drill gift shop or rectory. (And some of that whiskey will do double duty in Jim Wehan s Irish Coffee Bar.) Last year we made over $3,000 from your donations, minus what we drank ourselves, of course. So keep those donations coming. Decoration Donations: We offered you the opportunity to scour the local discount stores after St. Patrick s Day to purchase deeply discounted decorations for use at the festival. A few of you did, and we really appreciate that. Good shopping! Father Kriegel s Marriages: We asked all of the lucky couples who were married by Father Kriegel to donate $1.00 for every year they have been married and to include a wedding photo if possible or a recent photo. They are coming in slowly, but you still have plenty of time because we won t cut this off until later this summer when we hold that special mass to renew our vows. But don t use that as an excuse to wait. Do this now. Join the Committee: We re always looking for a few good people. Right now we re looking for someone to take over from Roselle Walkiewicz as the vendor relations chairperson. Check the March 19 bulletin for details. No one has stepped forward, but we trust in the good will of this parish and we re still hopeful. Let us know what you think: Good ideas are a great donation as well. According to Scripture and Catholic teachings we are called to protect the life and dignity of all human persons, no matter how young or old. Child abuse remains a national problem and working to prevent this abuse is an important response to what we are called to do a Church.
