February 7, 2016 I VE BEEN THINKING Lent This coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of our Lenten Season. It is a good thing to do a little thinking just before this Wednesday. There are many wonderful opportunities for prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Please remember that Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are meatless days for us. Also, we are told not to eat between meals on these two days. Also, the Fridays of Lent are meatless days, as well. I truly believe that all of us can keep these practices, but if your health conditions are too severe, do the best that you can. Our Regional Lenten Retreat will happen beginning on Thursday, February 18 and will continue each Thursday, as we make the rounds of our neighboring parishes - 4:30 talk, 5:30 soup supper, 6:30 repeat of the talk. The Lenten Service is always a good time to consider some extra help for the poor. It makes us feel better, I believe, when we help those less fortunate than we are. How about fasting from favorite desserts or snacks? It builds us up and allows us to deny ourselves a pleasure that can be offered for some person or intention (ie: a sick relative, world peace, etc.). The most important thing to remember about Lent is to Remember to Keep the Lenten Season in prayer, fasting and good works! May each of us enter this holy season in a willing and open spirit! Peace & Love,

Page Three St. Theodore s Church, Rochester, New York February 7, 2016 FOOD CUPBOARD NEWS 40 Foods for 40 Days Neighbors Helping Neighbors Lent will begin this week and St. Theodore s Food Cupboard is asking you to be a part of our 40 Foods for 40 Days. It is often difficult to decide what to do to make Lent a special season. The Food Cupboard would like to help you decide what special thing to do this Lent. Instead of giving something up, let s add something to our daily lives by sharing with others in need. Let us practice selfless giving by taking part in our 40 Foods for 40 Days. The idea is simple each parishioner donates 1 food item for each of the 40 days of Lent, February 10 to March 20. This will help the Food Cupboard in its fight against hunger in our community and help each of us establish a new pattern of giving which will give real life and joy to Lent. You ll note that this year we are asking for more than just cans. We are asking you to make a real sacrifice by donating our most needed items. Please cut out this list and attach to your grocery list ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- Canned Spam/Beef Stew Canned Chicken Tuna Corned Beef Hash Mac & Cheese Cereal Pork & Beans/Baked Beans Peanut Butter Jelly Pancake Mix Pancake Syrup Pasta Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate Spaghetti Sauce Crackers Hamburger/Tuna Helper Jello/Pudding Mix Canned Fruit Rice-A-Roni/Rice Cake/Brownie Mix Canned Pasta ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------- 40 Foods for 40 Days will be a success when all members of the parish commit to donating 40 items of food that is just one item a day, and it is most certainly in keeping with the spirit of Lenten Sacrifice. We hope everyone, young and old, will take up the practice of selfless giving to help those in need in our community. Donations may be brought in each weekend and placed on the Food Cupboard table you do not have to bring in all 40 items at the same time. LENT BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY Wednesday, February 10, begins the holy season of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a day of fast and abstinence. Ashes will be distributed during the following: 8:30 a.m. Mass 11:30 a.m. Liturgy of the Word w/ashes 7:00 p.m. Liturgy of the Word w/ashes LENTEN RULES ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. ONGOING BOTTLE AND CAN DRIVE TO SUPPORT YOUTH PROGRAMS Boxes to drop off your donations are in the main entrance of church, in front of receptionist office and outside Faith Formation Office. Thank you for your support! LOVE ONE ANOTHER Rochester Catholic Women s Conference March 12, 2016 The Aquinas Institute 1127 Dewey Avenue, Rochester, NY Register Online at www. RochesterCWC.org or through your Parish $50 Admission includes lunch, $35 for Women 18 to 24 Women of Faith LOVED Farewell Tour February 26-27, 2016 First Niagara Center, Buffalo, NY Friday, 7-10 PM and Saturday, 9-5 PM www.womenoffaith.com Four reasons why you need to be there: You are surrounded by other sisters in Christ. It s a great place to bring friends who might never go to church with you. The Gospel is presented in a clear and easy way to understand. You will walk away with something you didn t know you needed until it was given to you. Hear what others are saying about this event: God will find a way to touch each person through the words of others! The music is amazing! It s an experience that is hard to explain to others, it must be experienced. I was flooded with emotion as I saw a visual picture of the body of Christ coming together for the same purpose. If you are interested, please contact Lydia Blum at MA3@womenoffaith.com or at 937-305-6659 for group discounts and seat reservations.
