THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The Service of the Word is found on p. 38 in the front of the red hymnal. OPENING HYMN With the Lord Begin Your Task 478 INVOCATION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. P: Hear what God the Lord will speak, C: for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints. P: Steadfast love and faithfulness meet. C: Righteousness and peace kiss each other. P: Yes, the Lord will give what is good. C: Righteousness will go before him. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Yes, the Lord gives us what is good. He sends his Word to every nation. But we have not always desired to hear his Word. We have not always done what his Word says. We have not always spoken his Word faithfully to others. Let us confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. C: Merciful Father in heaven, we confess that we have ignored your Word. We confess that at times we have shamefully treated those who speak your Word. We confess that we have desired our own way and not your way. Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us! P: In love, God chose us for adoption as his heirs through Jesus Christ. We have redemption through Christ s blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his 3

grace. As a called servant of the risen Christ, and by his authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. OH, TASTE AND SEE PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your Word. By your Holy Spirit help us to receive it with joy and to bring forth fruits in faith and hope and love; through 4

your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE WORD FIRST LESSON Amos 7:10-17 A true prophet proclaims both the Law, which sinful people don t always want to hear, as well as the Gospel, which repentant people need to hear. 10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is what Amos is saying: Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land. 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom. 14 Amos answered Amaziah, I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel. 16 Now then, hear the word of the LORD. You say, Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac. 17 Therefore this is what the LORD says: Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be measured and divided up, and you yourself will die in a pagan [a] country. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land. 5

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 78 O my people, hear my teaching;* listen to the words of my mouth. I will utter things from of old,* what we have heard and what our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from our children;* we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD. Refrain The LORD decreed statutes for Jacob* and established the law in Israel, so the next generation would know them,* and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God* and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 6

SECOND LESSON 1 Timothy 3:1-7 God wants us to take his Word seriously and to apply it to ourselves before we tell others to do so. 3 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full [a] respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil s trap. VERSE OF THE DAY Deuteronomy 30:14 P: Alleluia. The Word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. Alleluia. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function. 7

GOSPEL Mark 6:7-13 All Christians, especially those called into public ministry, are simply to share God s message faithfully and let God take care of the results. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. 8 These were his instructions: Take nothing for the journey except a staff no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them. 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. HYMN OF THE DAY The Son of God, Our Christ 525 SERMON Amos 7:10-17 A Tale of Two Prophets 1. Amaziah proclaimed what the people wanted to hear 2. Amos proclaimed what God wanted them to hear APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8

THANK OFFERING Please take a moment to sign the FRIENDSHIP REGISTER. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Lord God, our maker and preserver, we praise and thank you for all that you give us day after day. C: We are not worthy of all the mercies you show us. P: You have given us your precious Word to nourish our souls and to protect us from the temptations of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature. C: We thank you for those who teach and preach your saving truth at this place and everywhere. Grant them a rich measure of patience, wisdom and love. P: Heavenly Father, we pray that you shield us from every kind of danger: sudden catastrophe, terrors of crime, and the pain of disease. Watch over those who travel by land, sea, and air. Keep our loved ones from whatever perils may threaten them. C: Heal those who are sick, cheer those who are sad, calm those who are distressed, and comfort all who are old and infirm. Silent prayer. P: We bring these requests before you in the name of Jesus our Lord, and ask you to hear us. Take all that we have, our bodies and minds, our time and skills, our ministries and offerings, and use them to your glory. C: We give ourselves to you that we may serve you in whatever way is pleasing in your sight. Amen. 9

LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. HYMN Good News of God Above 568 PRAYER P: Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BLESSING P: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. CLOSING HYMN Send Forth, O Lord, to Every Place 572 10

To my Bethlehem Family, Words can t express how thankful Jeanine, my family and I are to all of you. Through your generosity in providing meals, donations and most importantly the healing power of prayer, I have seen an amazing representation of the undeserved love that our Lord Jesus grants to all of us every day. I ve told people recently that Jeanine doesn t remember her time in the hospital. I thank God for the mercy He s shown in not only healing Jeanine, but in His choice to not have her again live through these moments. I thank God for allowing me to remember everything. I remember the sadness and desperation when things seemed darkest and I remember the joy and elation when it was clear that Jeanine was going to be given back to all of us. I never want to forget, or take for granted, all of you who gave so much from your heart. From the Bible, we learn that all things work together for good to them that love God. (Romans 8:28) I am thankful to say that I have seen this firsthand in the way that you, our friends at Bethlehem, lived your faith in glorifying God and in the well-being of our family. Jeanine, my family and I will never forget. Please continue to pray for Jeanine and our family as Jeanine will most likely need to have a stint put in her brain in the near future as a follow-up to the previous procedure. God s blessings to you all! Erich Schmandt and Family 12
