WHAT IS CONFLICT? Conflict is a struggle. It can be external or internal. *External Conflict: A struggle with someone or something rather than yourself *Internal Conflict: A struggle within your heart or mind

FIVE TYPES OF CONFLICT *MAN vs. MAN *MAN vs. HIMSELF *MAN vs. NATURE *MAN vs. SOCIETY *MAN vs. TECHNOLOGY (Man vs. Himself is the only one that is internal. )

MAN vs. MAN ARGUING OR FIGHTING WITH ANOTHER

MAN vs. HIMSELF AN INTERNAL STRUGGLE WITH A PROBLEM WITHIN YOUR HEART OR MIND

MAN vs. NATURE A STRUGGLE WITH NATURE (WEATHER OR ANIMAL USUALLY)

MAN vs. SOCIETY A STRUGGLE WITH INJUSTICE, BREAKING THE LAW, UNFAIRNESS OF A SET OF RULES

MAN vs. TECHNOLOGY A STRUGGLE WITH SOME TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY SITUATION (COMPUTERS, CELL PHONES, INVENTIONS, ROBOTS ETC.

(In real situations there can be more than one type of conflict. For the following ones, name the one that is most apparent.)

#1-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A boy finds himself unjustly accused of a crime and has been put in jail until his trial.

#2-TYPE OF CONFLICT? In the woods, a man strays from the rest of his camping group. It becomes dark, and he finds himself alone with a grizzly bear.

#3-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A father is forced to fight his neighbors in defense of his land.

#4-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A young woman fights to stay alive during a raging blizzard.

#5-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A young girl hopes to become the first female starting quarterback at Lincoln High, despite years of tradition and rules.

#6-TYPE OF CONFLICT? The Terminator and The Matrix are popular examples of this type of conflict in which man fights against a machine.

#7-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Jack didn t know whether he should lie to his parents or not about the F on his report card that he received in math.

#8-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Jason received ISS today for not following the school rules about the dress code. His pants were sagging almost to his knees.

#9-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Yesterday I was out with a friend at the mall when snow began to fall. I wondered if I should try to make it home or not.

#10-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A woman re-evaluates her life after turning fifty years old. She takes a trip to all the places she has always wanted to see and is gone for nearly two months.

#11-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Frankenstein is often considered the classic story of this type of conflict in which a scientifically-created human becomes a destructive monster against humans.

#12-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Ralph doesn t wish to enlist in the army as his brother Jake has. No one in his family is putting any pressure on him to do so, but he feels torn.

#13-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A college student struggles with pressure from his parents to do well in school. They want him to become a doctor, but he wants to be an actor. He argues with them about his wishes, but they won t listen.

#14-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A feud has existed between two neighboring families for decades with heated discussions and fights.

#15-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A woman and her children run for cover during a tornado.

#16-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A herd of dear ran right in front of my dad s pickup truck causing him to crash into a tree.

#17-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Sarah knew that she could just slip out the window and meet her boyfriend, but would it be worth it if she got caught?

#18-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Matt and Sam ran as fast as they could toward the freezer where the last Brown Cow was. Matt got there first so Sam shoved him out of the way and reached in and got that Brown Cow.

#19-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A Space Odyssey is an example of this type of conflict where Frank and Dave battle their flight computers.

#20-TYPE OF CONFLICT? My older brother wants to join the Army but he knows there s always a chance that he ll get injured. He wants to think about it some more and make up his mind next week.

#21-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Mom placed a quarter in the meter next to the clothing store and left with me to find a jogging suit. When we returned there was a ticket under the windshield wiper.

#22-TYPE OF CONFLICT? I just got invited to the Valentine s dance at school next week. I ve been thinking all day what dress I should wear. I just can t make up my mind. It s between the red silk dress or the sleek black one.

#23-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A young man was later arrested for selling drugs to an undercover policeman.

#24-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A scientist created Robby the Robot. He vacuums the house and makes the meals. His owner found dust in his meal though.

#25-TYPE OF CONFLICT? In the kingdom, poor villagers were not permitted to go to the prince s ball. It was against the customs of the times.

#26-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Placing dog food on her front porch for her dog attracted a hungry bear. Joan was very surprised when she opened the front door.

#27-TYPE OF CONFLICT? The teacher caught Patrick copying homework from Kristen in math class. He received a demerit and an F on the homework.

#28-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Nancy has trouble with her cell phone after she dropped it in a puddle.

#29-TYPE OF CONFLICT? My sister and I got in an argument over which boy in 7 th grade is the cutest.

#30-TYPE OF CONFLICT? James was eating breakfast when the house started shaking. Dishes fell off the table along with his breakfast and he fell to the floor.

#31-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A picture fell off the wall. When Mary went to see what caused the picture to fall, there was a big green snake slithering down the wall.

#32-TYPE OF CONFLICT? The teacher was typing a letter on her computer when it erased from her screen. What a disaster!

#33-TYPE OF CONFLICT? My mother didn t want me to watch TV all day so we got into an argument about the benefits and consequences of watching TV.

#34-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Mrs. Cooper joined Weight Watchers this morning, then she walked passed the cookie jar and was tempted to reach inside and just have one, but she knew she should not even eat one.

#35-TYPE OF CONFLICT? A group of girls were laughing at Samantha, teasing her too. Samantha went to the restroom and shed some tears.

#36-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Phillip wanted to ride his horse that was in the middle of the pasture. It took him an hour to get the bridle on his horse so he could ride.

#37-TYPE OF CONFLICT? Larry hated green peas. I think I ll hide them in my napkin at supper tonight. Then mom won t notice that I didn t eat them. When Larry sat down to eat he noticed that he didn t have a napkin. What ll I do now? he thought.

#38-TYPE OF CONFLICT? I slipped and slid through the ice and snow to get the mail from the mailbox.
