The Holy Trinity May 26 & 27, 2018 5:00 p.m. & 8:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER In the cry of the seraphim calling Holy, holy, holy there is an eternal echo that announces the presence and power of our God, the Holy Trinity. There is a sense of both majesty and mystery as Isaiah the prophet is commissioned to go and speak on behalf of the Lord. He is blessed with a holy vocation, a vocation that is ours to share. We are called to proclaim that God is Three in One, known and praised as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Joining our praise with the hosts of heaven, we proclaim the truth that God has revealed Himself to us. Like Isaiah, we are the called people of God. PRELUDE 5:00 Holy God, We Praise Your Name Kevin Hildebrand 8:30 Contempora Suite Prelude and Allemande Gordon Young The congregation turns and faces the cross as the procession approaches the altar reminding us that Christ leads us into the presence of God. PREPARATION Please stand ENTRANCE HYMN 940 Holy God, We Praise Thy Name INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. 2

And also with you. Let us pray. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, accept our thanks for our creation, redemption, and sanctification. We praise You that You have called us to be Yours. By Your grace, direct our lives that we would ever be Your holy people who walk worthily in Your ways; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 6:1 8 (The prophet Isaiah is given a vision of the Lord.) 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

PSALMODY Psalm 29 1 All on earth and all in heaven, Raise to God a song on high; Strength unmeasured, love unbounded, God alone we glorify. Refrain (verses 2-6 are spoken) 2 The voice of the Lord resounds across the waters; The voice of the Lord thunders over the mighty sea. 3 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. 4 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; The voice of the Lord splinters the trees of Lebanon. 5 The voice of the Lord strikes like lightening, The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness. 6 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl: The voice of the Lord strips the forest bare. Refrain 7 God of the waters, God of thunder, God s own might can make them cease; God s own voice which tumult beckons In a gentler breath speaks peace. Refrain 5

EPISTLE Acts 2:14a, 22 36 (Peter attests to the resurrection of Jesus.) 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him: I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' 29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." ' 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

Please stand The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL John 3:1 17 (The love of God is shown to the world in Jesus.) 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. 7

HYMN OF THE WORD 507 Holy, Holy, Holy PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Please stand ATHANASIAN CREED Pastor: We confess the Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as we profess portions of the ancient ecumenical creed written in the third century, on the basis of church father, Athanasius teachings. Whoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic* faith (*universal) And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance. Men: Women: Pastor: Pastor: Men: Women: Pastor: The Father is uncreated, incomprehensible, eternal. The Son is uncreated, incomprehensible, eternal. The Spirit is uncreated, incomprehensible, eternal. So likewise the Father is almighty God, the Son is almighty God, and the Holy Spirit is almighty God. And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord. For we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person by Himself to be both God and Lord, So we cannot by the catholic faith say that there are three Gods or three Lords There is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another; so that in all things the Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped. He, therefore, that will be saved is compelled thus to think of the Trinity. 8

Pastor: Men: Women: Men: Women: Pastor: Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man. Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, He sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead. At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies and will give an account of their own works. And they that have done good will go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the catholic faith which, except a person believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved. OFFERING 5:00 Holy, Holy, Holy Mark Hayes 8:30 Contempora Suite Sarabande and Gigue Gordon Young Please stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Each concluding: + + + Special Intercessions + + + Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 9

LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS Please turn towards the cross as it is carried out of the church, and remain facing it until the hymn is completed. This symbolizes our following Christ into the world as we leave. RECESSIONAL HYMN 795 Voices Raised to You We Offer POSTLUDE Holy, Holy, Holy Jeffrey N. Blersch 10
