PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - WINTER 2014 The Serra Club is still often mixed up with the Sierra Club, We are named for Blessed Junipero Serra, the missionary priest, whom most of know founded the California missions. It was fi rst established in 1935 in Seattle, Washington to encourage vocations to the religious life. The Sierra Clubs are concerned with preserving the planet. Serra Clubs are concerned with the ministry of the Holy Eucharist. Serra Clubs encourage vocations to the religious life through daily prayer, as "only God can choose his priests" An example of this activity is The 31 Club. Its intention is to enroll members to pick out one day a month to devote to pray for our seminarians. This is to include Mass on the day selected. We support our seminarians in many ways other than prayer. For example, adopting a seminarian to pray specifi cally for, to send letters, cards, and including them in other activities which would encourage them in their journey to priesthood. We all know the Serra prayer for Vocations. This year we had three seminarians ordained to the priesthood. Although the Seminary is not full we have an increasing number of young men attending. Our South County Club is showing signs of increasing interest. We anticipate this to continue as we encourage parishioners from other parishes to join us. Our Club has been in existence since September 7, 2005, and one of our parishioners, Ryan Holke, was recently ordained to the priesthood in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His fi rst Mass in the USA and in English was celebrated Saturday, October 25. His proud parents, Matt and Debbie, are very blessed and so are we. This is an opportunity of being a Serran at its best. Keep a copy of your. Serran Prayer for vocations with your Rosary on you night stand and pray them. God Bless You. Edward A. Words from the District Governor District 127 At the District Council meeting, several members of the council reported on the wonderful things that happened on Priesthood Sunday. St Cecilia parish had a lunch on Sunday in honor of the priests. Fr Maximillian O. Praem. was deeply moved by the priest blessing at the end of Mass. St Edward had a great collection of cards and notes to their priests showing appreciation of their Priesthood. The children at Holy Family Cathedral School made a banner and the whole school signed it thanking the priests and bishops. Different classes wrote thank you notes to different clergy. Bishop Brown went to the 4th grade to personally thank them for their thoughtfulness. Of course many other things happened at different parishes, these are just examples of what was done. We must also thank Deacon Frank Chavez for encouraging the deacons to either lead the priest blessing or arrange to have someone else lead it. And of course thanks to Patrick Mott, editor of the Orange County Catholic, for the article regarding Priesthood Sunday it was in the Oct 22 edition of the paper. And last but not least A great thank you to all the wonderful priests that serve us in the Diocese. This prayer is written in the spirit of Blessed Junipero Serra who had such an intense devotion to the Blessed Lord in the Eucharist. Loving Father, through the sending of your Son, you have filled us with faith that transforms our life and that strengthens us to face the darkness of this dark night. We have come in obedience to our Blessed Savior. We have come to worship Your Holy Will. We have come to see fulfilled what Jesus Himself taught us to pray: Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done We have come to adore Your Son who lays down His human life out of unfaltering love for You. Keep us faithful in our adoration. May our vigil lead us to the light of paschal grace, even as the star led the Magi to your newborn Son, We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Prayer Corner Please Pray for All Our Serrans, especially Carl Katcher, R.I.P. Msgr. John F. Sammon, R.I.P. Lloyd Sallot, R.I.P. Bishop Flores, R.I.P. Denis Flynn, R.I.P. Hi Everyone, It is that time of the year again and I will be sending out your Annual dues for our Fiscal Year November 1, 2014 to October 31, 2015. It is $100 for a single person, and $130 for a couple. Maybe once a year, you may be asked to be the Chef for one of our meeting nights. The menu consists of an appetizer, entrée, vegetable, salad, and dessert. Your can prepare it yourself, enlist others to help, or have it prepared by a restaurant. We use a ballpark of 25 to 30 for dinner. I can have a check or cash for you that evening. So, when our President calls and ask you to be our Chef for the evening, please consider an affi rmative reply. It is an an opportunity to display your culinary talent and win the acclaim of our members. Vocations Corner Saturday, October 25th at 5:30 PM Mass was special time for our club, Serra everywhere and St. Edward. Fr. Ryan Holke celebrated his first English mass in his home parish. St. Edward The Confessor. Now, little of nostalgia. In January 2005 a committee was formed to try to organize a Serra Club of South County. This was a definitive command of the Holy Spirit, by July, with the help of the other Serra Clubs in the Diocese of Orange, we had enough members to be able to charter the club. On September 7, 2005 Bishop Tod-David Brown installed our club by Mass at the Serra Chapel and dinner afterwards. Up until that time we had no vocations in South County. Ryan was our first vocation and in October 4, 2014 he became Fr. Ryan Holke of St. Maximilian Kolbe of the immaculata in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We have had other vocations since then and we continue to have some at present. The first part of next year we will have our ten year anniversary celebration. Thanks to all of you that have prayed and with financial support have made this possible. Let us continue to pray and foster Vocations in South County and everywhere. Put down Friday, December, 12th, 7-9:00? PM for our Annual Christmas Party that will take place at El Adobe Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano. A Christmas Invitation will be delivered in the near future. God bless, Joe Page 6
