THE ST. LUKE CONFIRMATION PROGRAM Mission Statement of St. Luke the Evangelist Confirmation Program St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Community Confirmation is a two year sacramental preparation and formation program. Each year encourages a fuller participation of the candidate, family and sponsor in the liturgical life of the Church and a growth in personal faith. At the high school level, catechesis focuses on that growth necessary to become an adult Catholic confirmed in the Faith. St. Luke s Confirmation Program serves the community by: creating opportunities for teens to encounter Christ; preparing teens to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and developing faith leaders. Vision Statement of St. Luke the Evangelist Confirmation Program St. Luke s Confirmation Program evangelizes each teen we encounter by developing personal, Christ-centered relationships. Welcoming them into a Catholic community filled with Christian role models. Providing Catholic catechesis based on the Scripture, Catechism, Catholic tradition and personal witness to faith. Fostering an understanding and desire to partake in the Sacramental life of the church, with the intent of creating active apostles who will spread the Gospel to all people through their lifestyle example, vibrant faith, and knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church. Confirmation Program The Confirmation Program is a 2-year journey in Christian growth based on the belief that adolescents are at a significant point in their faith journey where they are beginning to establish a personal faith identity. Through sharing of their own journey and interaction with others, the candidates are assisted in identifying and understanding how God is working in their lives. The candidate will come to a new realization of faith within the context of the parish community. They have everything to gain and nothing to lose in being a member of the Body of Christ and being blessed by the Holy Spirit. The following outlines the basics of the Confirmation Program at St. Luke the Evangelist Church. The program meets on sundays, usually 2 sundays a month. Please check your Confirmation Calendar. Candidates are placed in small faith sharing groups led by an adult and a peer leader who will journey together through the year. Attendance is a priority. This program is a spiritual journey. It is not a matter of reading a book or writing answers on a paper. Sharing is the primary community builder and separates this program from all others. One cannot share if one is not there! It takes commitment not only on the behalf of the candidate but also on part of the parent/guardian. We must have a copy of every candidate s Baptismal Certificate and First Communion Certificate in order for him/her to be confirmed. Do not let time pass! Avoid the added stress in your life and turn it in ASAP! As committed parents there are many ways you too can be active in your youth s faith journey. For example, you can assist us in transportation for service projects, assist as a chaperone during events/retreats, assist with kitchen at fundraisers, prior to retreats, help in the office and support scheduled events and fundraisers. As a family united in faith, you will be blessed and receive many graces. We do require fingerprinting, and Virtus class for any positions interacting with teens. You may find locations offering - Fingerprinting in our Diocese at no cost to you online at: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/hr/pages/fingerprinting.aspx Virtus training: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/safeguard/pages/education.aspx 4

CONFIRMATION REQUIREMENTS (See Check off list at end of handbook) 1) Sacraments Confirmation candidates are expected to attend Mass on a weekly basis with their families, even on the Sundays they are not in attendance of Confirmation class. Faith is a lifestyle, and implementing church attendance is a great way to continue your faith journey even after they are confirmed. Two Penance Services are required. If the student attends a Penance Service at school, please request a letter of attendance to be sent to the Confirmation &Youth Ministry Office to waive the absence. Email: Youth@stluketemplecity.org 2) Class Attendance Confirmation candidates are expected to attend class regularly. Only THREE (3) absences are permitted. a. Absence being more than 30 minutes late to any mandatory event. b. ½ Absence being 15 minutes late to any mandatory event c. All mandatory events are listed on the calendars. **Candidates should arrive 5-10 minutes early to check in, so classes can begin on time.** What if I have to miss a class? Please meet with Ivonne Melendrez, call to make an appointment preferably not an hour before your next Confirmation class. Send an email to: youth@stluketemplecity.org Confirmation should not be passed by for a movie, friends, or some other leisure activity. The way you approach classes will be a reflection on your readiness for confirmation. Don t make it a habit to miss class. 3) Retreats Year 2: This retreat is 3 day away retreat Firday-Sunday, in which the content will enhance their faith experience. See Calendar for dates. Parent and Teen Retreat (if did not attend in year 1) February (see Calendar for date and time) Location: Parish Hall (Rebuilding the Bridges of Communication, between parents and teens.) $35.00 (Includes Supplies, Dinner, and snacks for 1 teen and 1 parent) you may add additional $15.00 for additional teen or parent Each teen is REQUIRED to attend One Parent & teen retreat out of the two years of Confirmation Process What if I cannot attend the retreats because of other obligations? Again, I would ask that you carefully look at your priorities and decide where Confirmation ranks among them. This is extremely important when discussing the retreats because they are so powerful. We will work with you. But understand that if you cannot make a retreat, the Confirmation & Youth Ministry office should be notified immediately (by the end of September at the latest) so that other options may be presented. 4) Rites Year Two Ritual of Commitment Rites are an important aspect of the Confirmation process. Before the entire parish community, candidates will be making a public proclamation that they are committed to moving into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church. Sponsors must attend to support the candidates and profess their commitment to their candidate as they walk in faith towards Confirmation. 5)Youth Ministry participation Year One & Year Two (each year we require our students to participate in 4 nights of the following) We hold a Sunday Night Gathering once a month. Candidates are invited to join other youth in a variety of events and activities offered by our Youth Ministry program. They are more than welcome to invite their friends. It is a great opportunity for them to share their faith in greater community! See Youth ministry calendar. One night is praise and worship, another night is a special topic, both nights include community building, sharing and praise and worship music. Attend a Bible Study. Candidates will need to attend the St Luke s Youth Ministry Bible Reflection created intentionally for confirmation candidates (Held Thursday s in the Youth room 6:30pm 8:30 pm) Attend a Open topic. Discussion of the night is a pressing topic, that our youth are encountering today, Social, Family, School, and Personal. Attend a Prayer/Meditation/Adoration night Prayer night is a night usually experiencing different types of prayers through out the year. Meditation night is a night of guided meditation and discussion at end of the night. Adoration, a guided adoration night with the presence of our Lord and praise and worship music. Attend a Fun night It is usually held on St. Luke Grounds or off the grounds. If off grounds you will be able to pick up a permission slip and it will let you know if there is any cost. This is a community building opportunity to get to know others in a safe environment. 5

COMMUNICCONFIRMATION REQUIREMENTS (CONTINUED) 6) The Saint Name begin searching for a saints you would like to emulate, and pick the one you best identify with. Your Confirmation name will be the saint name you choose to do your report on. The Saint Report. This will assist the candidate to find their own Saint/ Confirmation name. (This is due in Year 2 Confimation Year.) Example of Saint report: My Confirmation Name: Veronica The veil of Veronica or 'Sudarian' (Latin for cloth) bears the likeness of the face of Jesus not made by human hands. The most recent legend recounts that when Veronica--one of the women of Jerusalem who accompanied Jesus to Calvary--wiped Jesus' face with her veil. His image was left on the cloth. The event is commemorated in the Sixth Station of the Fourteen Stations of the Cross. The Veronica story became a Central Icon of the Western Church in the Fourteenth Century. Firm recording of the veil began in 1199 when two Pilgrims, named Giraldus Cambrensis and Gervase of Tilbury made two accounts of the existence of the Veronica at different times. In 1297 Pope Innocent III publically displayed the Veil of St. Veronica and granted indulgences to those who prayed before it. I identify with Saint Veronica, as she was a faithful servant of the Lord, one who deeply loved the Lord. Enough to clean His face during His journey to Calvary, knowing that her actions could bring her severe punishment. I want to continue serving the Lord and His people, so they too can believe in Him and journey with Him not only at time of sadness, or despair but as a lifestyle. 7) Social Service & Justice YEAR ONE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND BOX CITY as one of the Social Service & Justice Project. All Year 1 candidates must complete a SERVICE PROJECT as an entire class. This will be completed by fully participating in BOX CITY: Homeless Awareness projet (by raising funds and fully participating in the activity from Sat. to Sunday.) We ask each teen to pay $20 or raise $50.00 or more. A pledge form is attached to the BOX City Registration. We also are pairing this event with Shoe collection, new or old. We will have flyers as this will take place over several months leading up to Box City. To raise funds and help the less fortunate, both local and international. Please call for an appointment or email: Youth@stluketemplecity.org. I will be more then happy to assist you. THE ROLE OF THE PARENTS Parents have such a big influence in the way a teen s faith develops and how seriously they take their commitment to God and His Church. As the primary catechists and role models, your teen is (and will be) evaluating how you live out your Catholic faith. This period of development in a teen s life is prone to questioning and challenging norms that have been established in their social life, school life, and family life. A determining factor in the life of a teen is how invested their parents are in knowing them as a person, rather than a child. It is critical that the actions and words you model, as a parent, reflect the morality and love our Catholic faith calls us to. We are here to work with you in preparing your teen for the Sacrament of Confirmation and we have opportunities for your involvement listed on the Parent Calendar. Please feel free to ask questions and be as involved as possible so that your teen knows you support him/her in this walk of faith. EXPECTATIONS: Parent/Candidate It is expected that parent(s) and candidate attend weekly Mass. It is expected that parent(s) and candidate will attend special Confirmation Liturgies and events. It is expected that parents(s) will support the completion of service hours, at home assignments, and projects that the candidate is expected to complete. Attend the required meetings. 7

St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Community Confirmation Sponsor Guidelines Role of the Sponsors The candidate should be journeying with a sponsor who he or she has asked to take a role of an example in their faith journey. The sponsor should be someone who knows the candidate, helps the candidate, and witnesses to the candidates morals, faith and intentions. The Sponsor should be chosen by the candidate and not the parent. A sponsor is A model of how a person of faith lives in todays world. The Rite of Christian Initiation. A friend who knows the candidate and can witness to the maturing faith of the candidate before the community. A guide, confidant, and listener. A learner who is interested in his/her own growth as he/she walks the faith journey with the candidate. A companion who will continue after Confirmation to walk the faith journey with the candidate and invite him/her into fuller participation in parish life and service. A practicing, Confirmed Catholic who has fulfilled all the sacraments as the Church calls us. Qualifications of a Sponsor A Confirmed Sponsor must be 18 years of age and a mature person in faith. Participate in the activities the two years of the Confirmation Process with the Candidate (i.e. Retreats, fundraisers etc ) By this time your Candidate should have a sponsor Who is on the journey with them. 8

What activities are recommended other then Confirmation events: 9 Confirmation Candidate- Sponsor Shared Activities: 9 1) Attend Sunday Mass together. After Mass, introduce your sponsor to the Priest that said Mass. 2) Participate in one community service activity together. 3) Visit the Blessed Sacrament together ( Ideal for situations where Candidate & sponsor do not live near each other.) 4) The candidate and sponsor should correspond with one another during the week or weekend (via e-mail, phone, or letters) to encourage one another to keep their commitment. Specific Personal goals may be kept private if that is desired, each can encourage one another and pray for the other to reach their goal. 5) Go to a movie and discuss the movie 6) Go to dinner together 7) Calling one another just to see how you are doing. Any time you do anything to grow as a person, improve your relationship with God and one another is a great way to build relationship of a life long journey in Christ. Remember your commitment to one another is not just during the 2 year Confirmation journey, it is a life time commitment to one another. Within the sacrament of Confirmation you as a candidate are asking an adult who you look up to as a Catholic, who's faith and lifestyle reflects one of example to assist in guiding you in a similar journey and path. BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES 11 1. Attitude 2. Attendance It is best for the candidates to come with an open heart and an open mind. Those who resist are so busy resisting they miss what is going on. Faith is a gift that we must be willing to accept. Preparing for Confirmation is a choice. The reality is: ONLY A CANIDIDATE CAN CHOOSE CONFIRMATION! Not parents, not friends, not brothers or sisters. Candidates are required to report to the hall and/or assigned classroom and must be on time to all events, class, Mass, etc. Candidates MUST attend every session because sessions meet every other week and are doubled. These sessions CANNOT be repeated. Only 3 absences per year are allowed for a serious illness or absolute emergency. We appreciate being notified by phone in advance.
