Salem Lutheran Church P O B O X 1 2 8 H I T T E R D A L, M N 5 6 5 5 2 2 1 8-962- 3 2 1 3 Regular Council Meeting A P R I L 2 0 1 8 Carolyn Juell, Salem Lutheran Church Council Minutes, Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 8 p.m. Council members present: Raynelle Anderson, Jeff Bettels, Susan Dunham, Warren Dunham, Charlie Johnson, Carolyn Juell, Roger Mattson, Dave Nelson, Gary Peterson and Pastor Ruth. Pastor Laurie Natwick from the Northwest Minnesota Synod office presented information on the call process and left a packet with council members. Recommendations included: Spend some time discussing how we want to proceed. Included would be if we want to remain a single point parish, contract for service with another parish or join with another parish. If we decide to call a pastor follow the constitution regarding the make-up and selection of a call committee. The secretary s report was read. Charlie made a motion to accept the report. The motion was seconded by Roger. Motion carried. Treasurer s report was read. Pastor Ruth made the correction that year to date amount in continuing education should have been included in 2017 budget year. Raynelle made a motion to accept the report as read. The motion was seconded by Jeff. Motion carried. Motion to pay the bills was made by Charlie. It was seconded by Gary. Motion carried. Pastor s Report: Pastor Ruth made 11 visits. Pastor Ruth has made a binder of information to pass on to Pastor Tom. She will turn in her keys after service on Easter Sunday. Craig Mattson has donated his time and materials for the upgrade to the sound system. Roger thanked Pastor Ruth for her service for the last three years. Meeting was closed with Lord s Prayer. 1

SLW News: Salem Lutheran Women & Quilters Circle Meetings for April 14, 2018 9am - Morning Circle: Circle at church with a Potluck Brunch and Bible Study will be done together. 2pm - Afternoon Circle: Circle at church with potluck. Bible Study done together. 7pm - Evening Circle: Circle will meet at church. Val is hostess. Bible Study together. April is Lutherans in a Lather month. Everyone likes to be clean! Consider donating bar soap for those less fortunate than we are. All soap must be in original packaging. The Spring Conference 5 gathering is Tuesday, April 24, at North Buffalo Lutheran Church, 2542 120th Ave. No., Moorhead. Registration at 5:30, with dinner at 6:00. Pastor Sue Koesterman, Executive Director of Churches United for the Homeless, will be the speaker. Physical offering: bath towels and size large (toddler size) diapers for Churches United. $10 registration is due April 16; let Val know if you are interested in attending. Fair Hills Women's Retreat will be June 11 & 12. More details (such as cost) will be shared when we get the information. There is a one-day or an overnight option. Bits & Pieces of Salem Lutheran s Past....... Val Johnson The pastor s report at the 76 th annual meeting in 1997 included 6 baptisms and 12 funerals. Lenten services will be a play/s by church members since Pastor Jill will be gone during Lent. The 77 th annual meeting was held after church services January 18, 1998. Pastor Jill presented options of sharing a youth pastor/person with Bethlehem. A ballot vote was taken: 33 yes, 10 no. Pastor Jill explained how she would cut down to 70% time. The parsonage is being rented. Salem s 125 th anniversary will be celebrated June 14, 1998. If you know of someone who has become ill, is dealing with a particular issue, or just someone who has difficulty coming to church regularly, please pass that information on. Benefit: A benefit will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 4-8 pm at the Lake Park American Legion for Rick Olson. Rick was a longtime ag teacher at the Ulen-Hitterdal School until 2002. Rick suffered a stroke on June 16, 2017 and has been in and out of hospitals and nursing homes since. He is presently at home under the care of his wife, Janet, while still receiving therapy. Rick also has Hereditary Spastic Paraparesis which is making it more difficult to recover from the effects of the stroke. The funds from the benefit will be used to purchase a special van which can be used to transport Rick while in his wheelchair. Senior Night: April 25th will be Senior Night. This is the evening that we honor the Seniors of our congregation that are graduating from area schools. There will be a program, Senior Quilts, and a light lunch following. 4
