. Sholosh Seudot You Gotta be Kiddin Me Halacha Discussion Six years after his wedding, Reuven brought his wife s wedding ring to the local jewelry shop for a small repair. Are you sure this is her wedding ring? asked the jeweler. Of course I am, said Reuven. Why shouldn t it be? Well, wedding rings are usually made of gold, but this ring is made of copper, said the jeweler. Reuven was shocked to hear this. He ran to his Rav to ask if the copper ring might have invalidated his wedding. As far as his wife was concerned, there was no cause for worry. Even if she expected an expensive gold ring and received instead only a cheap copper ring, it is customary for the Rav who officiates at a wedding to have two witnesses state in front of the bride that the ring is worth a perutah (A very small denomination of currency) Rather, the problem was that the ring might not have been Reuven s at all, in which case he should not have used it to marry her. The Halachah states that if a buyer receives merchandise other than that which is paid for, the sale is null and void (Bava Basra 83b: Shuchan Aruch, Chosen Mishpat 233:1) Since Reuven paid for a gold ring, but received instead a copper ring, the sale was not valid. The ring thus belonged to the seller and was not Reuven s to use in the wedding ceremony. Was the marriage still valid? Find out with Rabbi Rothman during Shalosh Seuda
Profiles This week we continue our PROFILES feature designed to help us get to know our fellow shul members in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive manner. This week we feature the B nai Mitzvot, Taiji Shmuel and Shoshana Aiko Beker. TCS: Where did you first meet? TCS: My gosh, you are right. So sorry. Who arrived on the scene first? Shoshana: Me! (She says proudly). TCS: Does she play that up? Shoshana: In the womb of course. TCS: Was Taiji very romantic when you first dated? TCS Editor: You numbskull. You are using the married couple s template. Taiji: You have no idea. That cow has been milked more than Betsy at the Sealtest farm. TCS: Who is the alpha dog in the family? Shoshana: Taiji is the alpha dog from a hygiene perspective. Not so much alpha. More dog. TCS: What do you admire most about each other? Shoshana: How we have not killed each other yet. Taiji: She is okay at cooking (okay by Taiji s standards = 3 star Michelin rating) Shoshana: He is very good at sports. TCS: And of course we have to ask what annoys you most about each other? Taiji: My head is exploding trying to narrow the choices down. Shoshana: He is constantly trying to annoy me. TCS: If you had to predict each other s futures what do you see? Taiji: I see her competing on Master Chef. Shoshana: I see Taiji living in the basement. For a long time. TCS: Do you think your parents have any clue what they are doing in raising you? Taiji: Nope can t think of a thing. Shoshana: Me neither. Hey, we actually agree on something. TCS: What are chances of each other finding a good shidduch? Taiji: Her chances are equal to those for winning the lottery without buying a ticket. Shoshana: The poor boy has no idea how miserable I can make his dating life by virtue of being classmates with all the girls in his grade.
TCS: Leaked sources tell us you have weekly family meetings. Can you describe what goes on? Taiji: Pappa tries to bring work concepts into our home through these meetings. He has crazy stuff like agendas, to-do lists and minutes. I am learning the art of looking interested while completely zoning out. Shoshana: There is a lot of thinking involved. TCS: About what? Shoshana: What we need to do on a practical level but also which character traits we need to improve. TCS: What are the Bekers known for? Taiji: Being into sports and being creative. Shoshana: Running crazy events and for people thinking that we have a C in our name. TCS: Most fun you have had as a family? Taiji: Playing on the computer. Shoshana: His virtual family. For me it is the family road trips. Taiji: Family trips? Like the time they made us do a 24 hour ultramarathon? Or Cleveland where Pappa made us listen to cave man music like the Beatles. Or how about Canton where Pappa made us look for Detroit Lion players in the NFL Hall of Fame talk about the proverbial needle in the haystack. Or when we went to Japan and Mommy forced us to go to Japanese Ulpan. Shoshana: I see your point. Taiji: We had a lot of fun during Mommy s last 2 trips to Japan when Pappa created the Shoshi Olympics and Military Camp. TCS: You have been members in many shuls. How would you rank TCS? Taiji: Dani s class stands out to me as being special. Shoshana: Not a big shul so it feels like family. TCS: Finally, as usual President Stuart Haber is away. This week he is in training camp trying to make an NFL roster. We are pretty sure he will be back next week but for now you will be co-presidents for a week. What is the one thing you would each change? TCS Editor: Before you answer that, what happened last week? Stuart was actually around to carry out his presidential duties. TCS: He came home early from Summer Camp. He was homesick and Michelle had to bring him back right after visiting day. Shoshana: Kiddish food should be improved and I am the person to make it happen. But I need to be paid handsomely for my efforts. Taiji: I would fire Stuart and stay president forever. Shoshana: I prepared dishes for the Biggest Loser and am available for catering jobs. Taiji: I am starting my career as a magician and a juggler. I am available for hire. Shoshana: And now you know why I see my parent s basement in his future.
