Pilgrimage The Hebrew word translated feast (hag) may literally mean pilgrimage (cf. Arabic haj of the (Muslim) pilgrimage to Mecca). The word is used of the festivals of unleavened bread (v.6), tabernacles (v. 39), and weeks (Exodus 34:22). If this is the correct etymology, it may reflect the fact that in later times these feasts were always celebrated in the central sanctuary in Jerusalem and involved a pilgrimage for outside the town who wished to participate. Gordon Wenham
The Feasts of Israel Pesakh [Passover] is of course the feast of the exodus. Shuvuos [Pentecost], falling on the anniversary of the Sinai revelation, is the day of the lawgiving. Sukos [Booths] betokens the 40 years of wandering in the desert, with the symbolic hut called a suko, or tabernacle. Herman Wouk This is My God

A Holy Calendar Time belongs to God. Harvests come from and belong to God. God established times for re-creation. The believing community is unified. National heritage is celebrated. Large groups brought greater praise. Aspects of redemption are celebrated. Allen Ross
Regularity God s people preserve their spiritual heritage through memorials. Leviticus 23:4
Regularity These are the appointed times of the LORD, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them. Leviticus 23:4
Passover and Unleavened Bread The passover and feast of unleavened bread served as a valuable annual period of instruction, reminding the Israelites of the theological issues involved in the exodus from Egypt, and also of the implications of covenant relationship. R.K. Harrison
Ritual God s people commemorate their deliverance from bondage. Leviticus 23:5

Passover, Pashcal Offering, Protection Offering ( פ ס ח) This word can be used to describe the whole event of Passover or the animal sacrificed. There is a wide variety of opinion about the exact meaning of the word. Some connect it to a word that can mean a limp or a dance. A more likely connection is to a word meaning protection (Passover is a sacrifice for protection, not a feast).
Passover, Pashcal Offering, Protection Offering ( פ ס ח) It is the LORD S Passover. I will pass through the land of Egypt in the same night, and I will attack all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both of humans and of animals, and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment. I am the LORD. Exodus 12:11-12 (NET)
Passover This liberation movement was an act of God. The Passover meal would constantly bring Israel back to that fact. They had gained their freedom, not because of Moses acute political organization, or Aaron s diplomatic skills, or because there was a popular uprising, and even less as a result of mounting a powerful army in opposition to Egypt's military forces, but because God intervened in judgment and salvation. Derek Tidball
Reenactment God s people remove corruption from their lives. Leviticus 23:6-8
Reenactment Then on the fifteenth day of the same month there is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not do any laborious work. But for seven days you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD. On the seventh day is a holy convocation; you shall not do any laborious work. Leviticus 23:6-8
Unleavened Bread At the time of the Exodus the significance attached to eating unleavened bread was that the people were in a hurry to flee. But in the legislation of the offerings, leaven came to signify corruption that was supposed to be excluded from the meal offering and purged from the houses. The point of the Feast of Unleavened Bread then came to refer to the covenant obligations of purging corruption after celebrating redemption. Allen Ross
Unleavened Bread Passover commemorated the deliverance from bondage, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread reminded everyone that a life of holiness should be pursued. Allen Ross
Fulfillment in Christ Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Corinthians 5:6-8
Lord s Supper Christians celebrate the fulfillment of Passover in Communion. 1 Corinthians 5:7
Fulfillment in Christ Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover? And He said, Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples. The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover. Matthew 26:17-19
Fulfillment in Christ While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body. And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father s kingdom. After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Matthew 26:26-30
Salvation Christ delivered us from our bondage to sin. 1 Corinthians 5:7
Sanctification Christ s sacrifice should motivate us to holy living. 1 Corinthians 5:8
Leviticus: Windows into the Heart of God God s people regularly remember and reenact their redemption motivating their holy living.
The Power of Passover The power of Passover and I dare say the real good of it, whether you call that good serving the Lord or maintaining the life of a great people, or both lies in observing the laws of leaven from dusk of the 14th day of Nisan to darkness on the 22nd. The first and last days of Passover are full holidays. In the interval, called the week of the festival, most work proceeds as usual. Herman Wouk
Passover and Unleavened Bread For Christians, Passover foreshadowed redemption in Christ, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread looked to the life of holiness that should follow not just for a week, or for a month, but forever. Allen Ross
