Administrative Council Jef Fuller January 2017 Trustees Henry Covington, Jr. Finance Todd Turner Treasurer Chad Cronshaw Recording Secretary Sandi Fratzke Staff Pastor Parish Relations Warren Wright January 2017 the MESSENGER Our Mission Is To Make Disciples For Jesus Christ! Revival! Methodist Women Phyllis Hoffman Memorial Fund Treasurer Lynda Palmatary Lay Members to Conference Bob and Sandy Harris Outreach Larisa Thomas Worship Pastor Mark Photographer Bob Clark I have been reading Psalm 85 over and over again. Psalm 85 is a prayer for the restoration of God s people. As in this country, there is a deep seated issue in Psalm 85 God is mad. God is mad because God s people are slowly, but surely, turning away from Him. Words like iniquity, fury, anger, wrath and indignation describe God in Psalm 85. God was being traded in for a cheap substitute, which was evidenced in their sins. We need revival! How do we know we need revival? Revival pre-supposes spiritual decline. Revival is needed when there is a lack of spiritual victories in the lives of God s people. We talk about sports, weather, and the news and those things are fine but when Jesus never comes up in the conversation, we need revival. When Christians are around people who do not know God personally and they are not motivated to share their faith and live out the hope that lives inside of them, we need revival. What is revival? Revival is about the restoration of the spiritual life of God s people. Our society talks about sports figures and actors reviving their vocations, they brought their careers back to life. Well, revival is about new life. Revival takes place when God and God s people reconnect, and when restoration has taken place in the lives of God s people. Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Psalm 85:6. Revival is almost always focused on God s people; not necessarily the world. Yes, there can be an overflow into the world, but it begins with God s people. Pastor Robyn and I will be preaching on revival all year long: January 8 March 26: Confessing our Needs April 2 June 25: Means of Revival July 2 September 24: Removing the Hindrances October 1 December 31: The Results of Revival Our theme in 2017 is: Revival! We have formed a committee to pray and to discuss the direction, responsibilities and components of revival. We need revival and it s going to begin with Centreville United Methodist Church. Pray that 2017 will be the year of restoration.
Page 2 All Things Prayer! Build the Track and the Train Will Follow Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6). There is a world-famous scenic railway over the beautiful snowcapped Alps. It stretches from Venice to Vienna; and it has an amazing history. For several years crews laid the track through the icy mountain passes, across the Alpine Mountains, which in itself was thought to be impossible. But stranger still, the track was laid before a train was built that could actually make the trip! When we pray with praise and thanksgiving, as Paul instructs us to do in Philippians 4:6, we are building a track. At that point, it s God s job to build the train! We are to be ever mindful of His benefits, not only for the things we want but also for the things we have. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits says Psalm 103:2. God never responds to ingratitude. Father, I come to You filled with gratitude for Your promises! You have been gracious to me beyond measure, and I am so thankful for Your goodness to me! May I live a life filled with faith that never gives up, and an expectancy that You will build the train that runs upon the track of prayers that are offered to You with praise and thanksgiving! Adapted from Giving Ourselves to Prayer: An Acts 6:4 Primer for Ministry Prayer Points Praise God, the one who is never far away from his children. Thank him for being close to you when you feel brokenhearted or crushed in spirit (Ps. 34:18). Confess your own unwillingness to have a God so near. Commit yourself to drawing near to God in daily prayer and fellowship (Jas. 4:8). Ask him to bless you by his presence throughout your life. Intercede for the great worldwide mission effort of the church. Ask God to raise up more workers to enter the harvest around the world. Pray specifically for missionaries whom you know or support financially. Prayer Pointer God does nothing on earth save in answer to believing prayer. John Wesley Prayer Points taken from Patterns for Prayer by Alvin VanderGriend. "This New Year, let CUMC continue in prayer, laying more train tracks for Revival and thanking God for His specific "Train" being built to carry forth His plans and purposes. To God be the glory!" Sunday School The Sunday School is looking for a middle school co-teacher to join our team. We are also in need of substitute teachers to fill in if a teacher needs to take a Sunday off.
