And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father is working until now, and I am working. Theology of Work: God s Design Genesis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. Theology of Work: God s Design The Fall changed the complexion of work. Genesis 3:17-19 And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Theology of Work: God s Design. The Fall changed the complexion of work. Jesus redeemed work. Ephesians 6:5-8 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. The Bible Chapel Page 2

Theology of Work: God s Design. The Fall changed the complexion of work. Jesus redeemed work. Work is a gift from God. Proverbs 10:3a The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry. Proverbs 13:25a The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite. Diligent: Sharp. Industrious. Persevering. Hard-working. Attentive. Sluggard: Looseness. Slackness. Lazy. Self-focused. The Sluggard: Shameful (Proverbs 10:4a, 5) Lazy (Proverbs 12:27a; 19:24; 26:14-15) Undependable (Proverbs 10:26) Full of excuses (Proverbs 22:13; 26:13) Dreamer (Proverbs 13:4a; 14:23; 21:25-26; 28:19b) Undisciplined (Proverbs 24:30-31) Unreasonable (Proverbs 21:16) Suffers Consequences (Proverbs 18:9; 19:15; 20:13a) The Bible Chapel Page 3

The Diligent Self-motivated Proverbs 6:6-11 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. The Diligent Self-motivated Hard Worker Proverbs 31:13-19 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. The Bible Chapel Page 4

She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. The Diligent Self-motivated Hard Worker Plans Ahead Proverbs 20:4 The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing. Proverbs 24:27 Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house. The sluggard takes great pains to escape from pains. -C. H. Spurgeon The Bible Chapel Page 5

APPLICATION 1. Patiently pursue God s calling. Proverbs 21:5 The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. Proverbs 28.19 Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty. 2. Young Adults: Don t date or marry a lazy person. Proverbs 10:26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him. Proverbs 18:9 Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys. Ecclesiastes 10:18 Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks. 3. Don t make people dependent. Proverbs 16:26 A worker s appetite works for him; his mouth urges him on. 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. The Bible Chapel Page 6

4. Keep work in a godly perspective. Proverbs 21:25-26 The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor. All day long he craves and craves, but the righteous gives and does not hold back. 2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
