June 2017 Puerto Rico Mission Trip Giving Back in Memory of Those Who Have Given All On June 17th twenty-four of us from Living Savior and Living Word will take to the skies with the destination of Puerto Rico before us. We ll spend a week there sharing the love of Jesus with the people of that island country. It s well-known that Puerto Rico has been a territory of the United States 1898, making the residents there citizens of the U.S. This makes our foreign mission trip not so foreign after all! Although Puerto Ricans cannot vote in our general elections, they can serve in the U.S. military and serve they have done and do today. Since this article is coming out in June between Memorial Day and the 4th of July, I thought it would be good to share briefly how Puerto Ricans have served in our military branches. Puerto Ricans helped fight alongside colonists in the American Revolution and have been a part of every major U.S. military engagement since that time. There are currently more than 100,000 Puerto Rican veterans and over 1,200 Puerto Ricans have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. We give thanks for their service and their sacrifice. Please keep your short-term missionaries in prayer as we travel to Puerto Rico in a couple weeks. Prayer for effective work, bold witness and safe travels is most certainly needed. May we leave a memory as God s soldiers bringing the Good News of eternal freedom through Notes from Pastor...1 Christ to our friends in Puerto Rico. MUSIC NOTES This is what the LORD says--- Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 43:1 The first Sunday in June is a WEAR RED Sunday! It is Pentecost Sunday, and we celebrate it with the appropriate parament colors as well. Key word here is celebrate the Holy Comforter coming to the world in such a visible way as recorded in Acts. The congregation will join the choir for the refrain of the Call to Worship which is, Hail Thee, Festival Day! Sing out, it is a catchy tune! What a wonderful word picture a comforter is when we are down and out, distraught, don t even know the words for a prayer, the Holy Comforter steps in and handles it for us. Streaming is the sermon topic, so use your imagination. We are going out on a bit of a limb singing-wise, as we will join together singing a goldie oldie, Shall We Gather at the River during communion. Pay attention to the words. Yet a bit more theological, the second Sunday in June is TRINITY Sunday, which brings us back to our catechism definitions. The best explanation for the Trinity is the the banner for Trinity Sunday which comes straight out of Luther s Small Catechism. The paraments will be white just for this Sunday, and the congregation will again join in on Hail Thee, Festival Day!, right before you get to belt out Holy, Holy, Holy. June 18 th, we will have Pastor Kasper leading us in worship while Pastor Bailes and Cheryl and about 20 others will be in Puerto Rico on the Mission Trip. This is also Father s Day, so honor both your Heavenly and earthly fathers by worshiping together as family in the body of Christ. Please keep our brothers and sisters in prayer while they are away. The third Sunday after Pentecost talks about fear, and in particular, Why Fear? If we are honest, we all have experienced fear in one way or another. It could be in our past, present, or as the future is contemplated. In this troubled world, this is sure to be pertinent to all. Think about someone to invite and do so! The choir will recess for the summer, but all the background planning, music choices, and worship planning continue on with our committee for which we all owe a huge thank you for their faithful participation! We are preparing to pack up and relocate things as we prepare for demolition and construction to begin. This will present some challenges and maybe inconveniences, (especially if we don t do well with change; it will kind of be like camping out!) but as we keep our focus on the Word, and the Great Commission, we can press forward with confidence and joy. Let us hold hands and encourage one another!
