K/1 st Grade Hallowed Be Thy Name Bible Verse Holy, holy, holy, Lord All-Powerful! The earth is filled with your glory (Isaiah 6:3) Teacher Enrichment This lesson is the fourth in the Teach Us to Pray series which emphasizes the practice of prayer using The Lord s Prayer. Each week will examine a stanza of The Lord s Prayer, what it tells us about God and how it directs our prayer life. Today s lesson explores Hallowed Be Thy Name. The word hallowed means holy, sacred, revered. To say God s name is hallowed is obviously a correct observation, but it is also a call to action. God, and His name, is perfect and holy and set apart from everyone else. As Christians, we must act in a way that keeps His reputation good in the minds of people who don t know Him. We keep God s name holy by speaking it reverently, by not making it a joke or a swear word. We also keep His name holy by living the kind of life He wants us to live. This lesson will teach what it means for God s name to be kept holy in our lives through our words and actions. Children will also explore the many names of God found in the Bible and their meanings. When we consider all of God s names and titles, we begin to appreciate the hallowedness of God and develop a desire to praise His holiness in our prayers. As you prepare for this lesson, think about your own life and how you respect God s reputation; how you hallow His name. Do you think, speak and act in ways that show you love God? If someone looked at your life, what would they think that you thought of God s name? Do your prayers include praises for God s holiness? Before Class Begins Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival.

The Lesson SUPPLIES: Names of God Prayer Cards, Names of God blank door hangs, Names of God stickers, foam stickers, markers Gather all the children in a circle on the carpet. As you are able, sit on the floor with them or use a chair as part of the circle. SAY: Today we are learning about the many names of God. In Children s Worship, we learned that God s name is hallowed or holy. That means it is special. Each of you has a special name. I bet most of you have a first name and a middle name and a last name. That s three names! In the Bible, God has over 100 names! We are going to learn about three of those names now. SAY: For each name, I m going to read a prayer and you are going to help me finish the prayer! Hold up a prayer card and read the prayer. Allow the children to help finish the prayer. After a handful of children have finished the prayer, re-read the prayer with a few of the answers filled in. Using the Names of God Discussion Guide, summarize why this is an important name of God and how it shows He is holy.
SAY: Now that we know some of the names of God, we are going to make a door hang. (Show sample door hang) The door hang will have the three names of God on one side and you can put your name on the other side. You can take this home and hang it on the door to your bedroom as a reminder that you have a special name and that God has many special names! Have the children move from the carpet to seats at the tables. Give each child a blank door hang. Provide Creator, Teacher and Healer stickers, one each per student. Have children decorate their door hang using the foam stickers, including letters to spell their name, and markers. While the children are creating their door hangs, ask questions about their names. Suggested Questions What is your middle name? Are you named after anyone in your family? Do you know what your name means? Do you know anyone else with the same first or middle name? Does everyone in your family have the same last name or do you have different last names? As children complete their Names of God Door Hangs, encourage them to return to their Hallowed Be Thy Name coloring page if they did not complete it. Closing Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the children to say a prayer or use the one below. God, Thank you for being the best Teacher, Healer and Creator. We praise your holy name! Amen
If time remains before parents arrive, encourage children to return to their Heaven s Gate coloring sheets if they did not complete it. Also encourage conversation between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom!
