The Grapevine January 2013 The 2013 Planning Session has been scheduled for Saturday, January 26th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Following a brief time of breakfast and fellowship, we will prayerfully spend some time planning for our ministry together in 2013. While this planning session is for members of the Administrative Council, all persons who are a part of New Covenant Church are welcome to attend. (Please bring a breakfast item for all to enjoy.) New Covenant United Methodist Church Corner THOUGHTS OF THE PASTOR My daughter, Heather, spent 2 ½ years serving our country in the Peace Corps on the continent of Africa. She lived in a small village in the northern part of Zambia without the benefit of electricity or running water. During her time there, this Dad had the joy of going to visit her in Zambia, to see the beauty of the Zambian countryside, and to meet the people of the village where she lived. One of the people I met there was a man named Lapson, the patriarch of the village where Heather lived and worked. I brought gifts for all the people of the village where Heather lived, but I brought a special gift for Lapson. Heather had shared with me that he wanted a new Bible and that his old Bible was weathered and worn. Lapson had literally given pages out of his Bible to others who he thought would benefit from the Word. One of the most touching moments for me during my time in Zambia was giving that Bible to Lapson and seeing tears stream down his cheeks as I put that book into his hands. While Lapson had little riches as the world would see them, he truly knew what a rich treasure is God s word. As you read this, a new year of 2013 is only days away or only days old. I am excited to share with you that 2013 will be the year of the Bible here at New Covenant Church. I invite you to join me in a journey through the Bible in 2013 as we read through the holy scriptures together. By reading 3 chapters a day 6 days a week and 5 chapters on one day a week, we can read through the entire Bible in 2013. There will be a reading plan made available to help you do this in 2013. There also will be other resources to help you along the way such as the following: gatherings throughout the year as we complete reading sections of the Bible such as the New Testament and Old Testament small group opportunities where people can share their thoughts or questions about what they are reading. We will be encouraging Sunday School classes to give a few minutes weekly to what they read during the past week. My weekly messages in worship will focus on one of the passages of scriptures we read together during the last week. I truly believe that we as followers of Christ and we as a Church will be transformed by this journey through the Bible in 2013. Come along on this journey through the Bible in 2013, and discover again or for the first time the treasure of God s word. Pastor Randy Wall Pastor s

Happy New Year!!!! I pray God blesses us all this coming year. This year in youth ministry I feel God is going to do some great things that will make a difference in peoples lives. As most have seen, we have a very special group of young people that are eager to serve Christ. This year they will have a chance to do just that in a ministry of their choice. This will be called Student Lead Teams where youth will recruit others, youth and adults, to begin a ministry they feel strongly about. This could be from service work of setting up chairs and tables or calling each youth or contacting and connecting with new youth. It could also be starting a ministry to help elders or those with special needs, the homeless, orphans or adopting a child overseas through Compassion. We have already had one youth step up and speak up to take over organizing, inventorying and making goodie bags for RITI. Hannah Carpenter decided on her own she wanted to do this and then contacted the people she needed to talk to about doing it. I have seen her work very hard already on this ministry and we all should be proud we have such compassionate youth. To close, I want to mention a few things coming up. Winter Jam this year is January 5th at Time Warner Arena. It is a Saturday this year, yeah!!!!! Also the second weekend in February, we are planning a ski trip to Lake Junaluska. Lastly, on March 15th, Live Out Loud, our youth praise band, has been asked to play at an Aktion Club fundraising event. What makes this exciting is the fundraiser is at a Charlotte Checkers hockey match. So LOL will be playing at Time Warner Arena!!!!! If your not familiar with Aktion Club, they help those with special needs through the ARC of Mecklenburg and the Kiwanis Club. If you can, make plans to come out March 15th and see a hockey game. Tickets are $15 and $7 of that goes to the Aktion Club. Personally, I am really excited about this year. Thank you everyone who helps, prays, and supports our youth. I love them so much, and all of you too. God Bless. Todd Guest Blood Pressure Screenings will be taken on Sunday, January 6th at 10:00 a.m. in the parlor. Questions, see Robin Lanham, Betty Simmons or Judy Price! The Trustees will meet to elect a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary on January 6th at 10:45 a.m. in the sanctuary.
