Exdus 13 With the start f chapter 12, we entered the third divisin f the bk f Genesis, Gd s redemptin f His peple thrugh the Passver and it runs thrugh chapter 13 SLIDE 13-1 Last week we studied the details f the Passver judgment, including lking fr many f the signs f Christ evident in the memrial And at the end f the lessns, we had reached the pint where the natin was n lnger enslaved They were nw free t leave Nt nly were they leaving behind slavery, they als left behind pverty They walked ut a rich natin, having plundered the Egyptians Nw Mses recrds the departure and the early stages f the Exdus Last week we read they traveled a shrt distance frm their encampment in Rameses t Succth SLIDE 13-2 This brings them t the brder f Egypt At this pint, they leave Egypt and becme a natin under the charge f the Lrd Ex. 12:40 Nw the time that the sns f Israel lived in Egypt was fur hundred and thirty years. Ex. 12:41 And at the end f fur hundred and thirty years, t the very day, all the hsts f the LORD went ut frm the land f Egypt. Mses reprts that the natin f Israel lived in Egypt fr 430 years SLIDE 13-3 And that after 430 years, t the very day, all the hst f the Lrd went ut frm Egypt Gd s svereignty is clearly evident in Mses statement Gd rchestrated events s that the day f their departure matched perfect a day 430 years earlier But this synchrnicity is even mre remarkable than it seems at first 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 2 f 21 And in rder t understand hw, we need t take a clser lk at the 430 year perid Mses is describing here We will rely extensively n the slide handuts t explain this sectin f Scripture First, let s cnsider Paul s cmmentary n this timeline in Galatians SLIDE 13-4 Gal. 3:16 Nw the prmises were spken t Abraham and t his seed. He des nt say, And t seeds, as referring t many, but rather t ne, And t yur seed, that is, Christ. Gal. 3:17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came fur hundred and thirty years later, des nt invalidate a cvenant previusly ratified by Gd, s as t nullify the prmise. Gal. 3:18 Fr if the inheritance is based n law, it is n lnger based n a prmise; but Gd has granted it t Abraham by means f a prmise. Paul uses t mile markers t anchr the 430 year perid One anchr is the giving f the cvenant t Abraham when he left Ur and entered Canaan This is the Abrahamic Cvenant The ther anchr is the giving f the Law at Mt. Sinai Between these tw pints Paul says there are 430 years If we place that timeline n tp f the earlier timeline f Exdus 12, we immediately find an apparent cnflict Israel culd nt live in Egypt fr 430 years AND the time between Abraham s cvenant and Mses cvenant als be 430 years S we have a dilemma t reslve But it gets wrse When we lk at the mment when Abraham received that cvenant in Genesis 15, we hear the Lrd say this: SLIDE 13-5 Gen. 15:13 Gd said t Abram, Knw fr certain that yur descendants will be strangers in a land that is nt theirs, where they will be enslaved and ppressed fur hundred years. 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 3 f 21 The Lrd s testimny t Abram seems t say that his descendants wuld be in Egypt fr fur hundred years Again, if we verlay this timeline n the thers, we find a third cntradictin Stephen repeats the 400 number in his speech in Acts 7 Acts 7:6 But Gd spke t this effect, that his DESCENDANTS WOULD BE ALIENS IN A FOREIGN LAND, AND THAT THEY WOULD BE ENSLAVED AND MISTREATED FOR FOUR HUNDRED YEARS. Nw the perid f time in Egypt is 400 years lng, r s it seems Nw we have three different statements t recncile But it gets wrse In that same giving f the cvenant, the Lrd reveals t Abraham that his descendants will eventually return t the land And that return will happen after fur generatins SLIDE 13-6 Gen. 15:16 Then in the furth generatin they will return here, fr the iniquity f the Amrite is nt yet cmplete. The fur generatins that experienced time in Egypt began with Jacb s sns wh entered the land We can trace the generatins wh lived in the land in severals places in the Bible In Exdus 6, 1Chrn 6 and 1Chrn 23 we see the genealgy f Israel traced during the time f sjurn in Egypt Using the genealgy in Exdus 6 we trace the fur generatins frm Jacb t Mses Jacb s sn, Levi, entered the land He brught a sn Khath with him when he entering Egypt S even as the time in Egypt began, the next generatin was already alive 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 4 f 21 Then Khath had a sin Amram And Amram was the father f Mses S the fur generatins can be represented by Levi, Khath, Amram and finally Mses Mses was the last generatin t live in Egypt Even under the mst generus estimates f age, we cannt cver 400 years (much less 430 years) with nly fur generatins Even the mst generus estimates still fall ver a hundred years shrt S the fur generatins requirement places an upper limit n hw lng the natin lived in Egypt And this upper limit is far less than 400 years, prbably clser t half that time S nw we have a furth discrepancy t recncile But it gets wrse While we can t accurate determine the length f time between generatins in Egypt, we can accurately calculate the time between generatins befre Israel entered Egypt Abraham received the prmise f the cvenant when he was 100 SLIDE 13-7 It was 25 mre years befre Isaac was brn It was 60 mre years befre Jacb was brn And Jacb was 130 years ld when he entered Egypt Gen. 47:9 S Jacb said t Pharah, The years f my sjurning are ne hundred and thirty; few and unpleasant have been the years f my life, nr have they attained the years that my fathers lived during the days f their sjurning. Therefre, we can easily calculate a perid f 215 years between the mment Abraham received his cvenant and the mment Israel entered Egypt This number places a limit n hw lng Israel culd live in Egypt 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 5 f 21 S nw we have a fifth data pint t recncile We had better stp lking fr befre it gets even wrse As yu might imagine, peple wh dubt the Bible s authrity and wish t discredit what it says have pinted t these apparent incnsistencies as prf f the Bible s untrustwrthiness As yu ll sn see, such claims are merely prf that the accuser is ignrant f Scripture and lacks the cunsel f the Hly Spirit We may nt always be able t slve the riddles f scripture in a mment when we re challenged But we can rest assured that the riddles have slutins and the Lrd will shame all His accusers in the day f His glry And this riddle is n different, s let s slve it First, let s begin with the scripture references that prvide unshakable time anchrs SLIDE 13-8 Fr example, Paul s teaching in Galatians clearly establishes that the perid f time between the tw cvenants was 430 years Everything else must fit within that perid Secndly, the ages f the patriarchs are irrefutable in scripture S we knw the time frm the cvenant with Abraham until Jacb entered Egypt was 215 years These tw data pints give us smething t wrk with when examining the rest f the references The next thing we ntice is that the 215 is exactly half f 430 S using simple math, we calculate that the perid frm Jacb s entry int Egypt until the natin leaves under Mses leadership was als 215 years Therefre, the perid f fur generatins mentined in Genesis 15 spanned a secnd perid f 215 years This length f time wrks much better when calculating the ages f the Levi s descendants than the earlier 400 year suggestin SLIDE 13-9 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 6 f 21 Next, let s revisit where we started tnight in Exdus 12 SLIDE 13-10 Ex. 12:40 Nw the time that the sns f Israel lived in Egypt was fur hundred and thirty years. Ex. 12:41 And at the end f fur hundred and thirty years, t the very day, all the hsts f the LORD went ut frm the land f Egypt. In my Bible (NASB) we read that the sns f Israel lived in Egypt fur hundred and thirty years Interestingly, Mses is using the 430-year perid again as did Paul But Mses seems t say the 430 years represents the time Israel lived in Egypt But we ve already established cnclusively that Israel culd nly have lived in Egypt fr 215 years This statement flatly cntradicts what we ve already cncluded, s hw can we recncile this verse? The answer cmes frm a clser examinatin f the Hebrew text itself And in this case, we need t g back t ne f the earliest translatins f the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint (LXX) The LXX was a Greek translatin f the Hebrew Bible authred by 70 learned Jewish leaders It represents ne f the mst authritative versins f the Jewish scriptures in existence When we lk at these same verses fund in the LXX, this is what we read Ex. 12:40 And the sjurning f the children f Israel, while they sjurned in the land f Egypt and the land f Chanaan, was fur hundred and thirty years. Ex. 12:41 And it came t pass after the fur hundred and thirty years, all the frces f the Lrd came frth ut f the land f Egypt by night. Ntice that this translatin cunts the 430 years very differently Here the time perid includes all the peple f the seed prmise sjurned in bth the land f Egypt and the land f Canaan 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 7 f 21 Then the 430 years was cmplete when the sjurning ended When the natin was n lnger wandering in a land that wasn t their wn, then the clck stpped S the perid f 430 in Exdus 12 is the same perid that Paul is describing SLIDE 13-11 It is the perid frm the call t Abram and the giving f the cvenant until the giving f the secnd cvenant when Israel left Egypt The perid is a ttal f 430 years, divided int tw halves f 215 years Ntably, Mses says they natin left n 430 years exactly n the day What day wuld that be then? What happened exactly 430 years earlier frm the day Israel left Egypt? It was the day Gd appeared t Abraham in Genesis 15 and gave Abraham the cvenant prmising Isaac And what day was that? The 14 th f Aviv The Passver day Nw we see an even mre impressive display f Gd s svereignty He wrked t bring Israel ut f bndage just as He prmised Abraham n the day f redemptin Exactly 430 years later We still need t make sense f the Lrd s statement made in Gen 15 prmising that Israel wuld be in a freign land fr 400 years? Hw des this fit? Gen. 15:13 Gd said t Abram, Knw fr certain that yur descendants will be strangers in a land that is nt theirs, where they will be enslaved and ppressed fur hundred years. First, ntice that the Lrd s prmise begins with Abraham s descendants SLIDE 13-12 S the Lrd isn t starting the clck until Abraham has a descendant At the mment Gd gives Abraham this declaratin, we are 11 years away frm Abraham receiving Ishmael 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 8 f 21 But we have t remember that the Lrd s statement t Abraham in Genesis 15 was part f Gd s prmises in His cvenant And the Bible tells us that these prmises were spken nt f Ishmael but f Isaac And we are 25 years away frm Isaac s arrival S If Abraham s descendants will be ppressed fr 400 years, then we must add 25 mre years that Abraham spent waiting fr that descendant t arrive Secndly, the Lrd s statement in Genesis 15:13 must be understd in light f the Hebrew grammar The Lrd says that Abraham s descendants will be strangers in a land, enslaved and ppressed fr fund hundred years What des the time perid 400 years describe? Is this the time they were strangers having left Ur? Is it the time they were wanderers in Canaan? Is it the time they were enslaved in Egypt? Is it the time they were ppressed in slavery? The grammar f the sentence indicates that 400 years describes all these things S Abraham s descendants will be subjected t a perid f 400 years f wandering as strangers in a land that is nt their wn And a part f that time will include slavery and ppressin S the 400 years ends when Israel leaves slavery in Egypt And it ges back t the time Israel wandered in Canaan, which was a strange land that was nt their wn Abraham, Isaac and Jacb s wanderings were a sign f faith in this prmise They lived a nmadic lifestyle as a matter f chice t demnstrate their faith in this prmise 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 9 f 21 But when we place the 400 years n ur timeline and add the 25 years Abraham waited fr Isaac s birth, we still cme up 5 years shrt Where are the extra fives years t be fund? SLIDE 13-13 Let s g back t Galatians t find the answer Gal. 4:22 Fr it is written that Abraham had tw sns, ne by the bndwman and ne by the free wman. Gal. 4:23 But the sn by the bndwman was brn accrding t the flesh, and the sn by the free wman thrugh the prmise. SLIDE 13-14 First, we remember that Abraham had tw sns, as we said And the ne we are using fr ur cunt is the child f the prmise, Isaac When Isaac was brn, Ishmael was already 13 years ld And thugh Gd cnsidered Isaac t be Abraham s heir, Abraham was still assuming Ishmael wuld share in his inheritance S frm Abraham s pint f view, the true descendant was still unclear Only after the true heir was identified des the 400 year cunt begin Fr the first few years f Isaac s life, that clarity was lacking S the 400 year cunt didn t start with Isaac s birth When did it start then? Gal. 4:29 But as at that time he wh was brn accrding t the flesh persecuted him wh was brn accrding t the Spirit, s it is nw als. Gal. 4:30 But what des the Scripture say? CAST OUT THE BONDWOMAN AND HER SON, FOR THE SON OF THE BONDWOMAN SHALL NOT BE AN HEIR WITH THE SON OF THE FREE WOMAN. After Isaac s was weaned, the Lrd appears t Abraham and instructs him t send Ishmael away because Ismael was nt t be an heir This was the mment when Abraham finally learned that Isaac alne was t be his descendant accrding t the prmise in Genesis 15 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 10 f 21 Genesis tells us that the mment f this separatin was n the ccasin f Isaac s weaning SLIDE 13-15 Gen. 21:8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast n the day that Isaac was weaned. Gen. 21:9 Nw Sarah saw the sn f Hagar the Egyptian, whm she had brne t Abraham, mcking. Gen. 21:10 Therefre she said t Abraham, Drive ut this maid and her sn, fr the sn f this maid shall nt be an heir with my sn Isaac. Gen. 21:11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because f his sn. Gen. 21:12 But Gd said t Abraham, D nt be distressed because f the lad and yur maid; whatever Sarah tells yu, listen t her, fr thrugh Isaac yur descendants shall be named. Children were weaned in the ancient wrld with a feast n their fifth birthday SLIDE 13-16 S we take the 400 years in Gd s prmise fr Abraham s descendants and add 25 years f waiting and anther 5 years fr the weaning After the additinal 30 years Gd clearly identified t Abraham wh wuld be the descendant At this pint the 400 years begins t cunt And these dates recncile perfectly with the rest f ur timeline S t summarize, Abraham and his descendants wandered in Canaan fr 215 years, and then sjurned in Egypt fr anther 215 years And during the secnd perid f 215, the natin was enslaved and ppressed But after 430 years, Gd s prmise t redeem Israel was fulfilled In fact, Mses says that it was exactly 430 years t the day that Gd s prmise t Abraham was fulfilled Such exactness demnstrates that Gd is s careful in keeping his prmises, that He desn t even rund ff the numbers The Lrd s uncmprmising faithfulness is reflected in His perfect precisin and timing One mre thught n Gd s timing... 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 11 f 21 Mses s says the natin left precisely n the same day as the day Gd gave Abraham the prmise We knw the day Israel left Egypt was the 14 th f Aviv, Passver S that means the Lrd delivered His prmise t Abraham n the 14 th f Aviv, the future day f Passver The Lrd s prmise was t free Israel frm bndage in Egypt But it als included the prmise that the Lrd wuld bring a Seed thrugh Abraham t bless the entire wrld Paul tells us in Galatians that the seed refers t Christ These prmises were spken n the 14 th f Aviv (r Nisan) and bth f these prmises are fulfilled n the 14 th f Nisan Israel received freedm n the 14 th f Nisan, 430 years later And the wrld received it s Passver Lamb n the 14 th f Nisan when Jesus died n the crss Gd s svereignty and precisin are stunning Finally, the Lrd reminds Israel f the sanctity f the Passver celebratin Ex. 12:42 It is a night t be bserved fr the LORD fr having brught them ut frm the land f Egypt; this night is fr the LORD, t be bserved by all the sns f Israel thrughut their generatins. Ex. 12:43 The LORD said t Mses and Aarn, This is the rdinance f the Passver: n freigner is t eat f it; Ex. 12:44 but every man s slave purchased with mney, after yu have circumcised him, then he may eat f it. Ex. 12:45 A sjurner r a hired servant shall nt eat f it. Ex. 12:46 It is t be eaten in a single huse; yu are nt t bring frth any f the flesh utside f the huse, nr are yu t break any bne f it. Ex. 12:47 All the cngregatin f Israel are t celebrate this. Ex. 12:48 But if a stranger sjurns with yu, and celebrates the Passver t the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him cme near t celebrate it; and he shall be like a native f the land. But n uncircumcised persn may eat f it. Ex. 12:51 And n that same day the LORD brught the sns f Israel ut f the land f Egypt by their hsts. Frevermre, the natin is t bserve the night f the Passver as a memrial t the wrk f Gd in fulfilling His prmise This is the memry the Lrd wants Israel t have frm their time in Egypt Thugh 430 years have passed and many events have transpired in the lives f Israel since the giving f the prmise, the Lrd nly wants this mment t be memrialized The faithfulness f Gd t passver Israel and bring them ut f bndage That mment is the ne t remember This is yet anther anther parallel t the last days f Tribulatin, when Gd brings His ultimate fulfillment f His prmises t Israel The Exdus pictures the way the Lrd will ne free Israel frm her bndage t sin and disbedience The Lrd will use great judgments t free the natin, but ultimately the natin s freedm cmes by way f their Passver, the Messiah And after that mment, the natin will enter int the glry f the Kingdm At that pint, the nly memry the natin will carry will be the memry f the Lrd s redemptin The Passver, that is Christ, will be the memry Israel carries int the Kingdm They will nt remember the years f wandering when they were scattered amng the natins They will nt remember their years f ppressin at the hands f their enemies As Isaiah says 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Furthermre, the Lrd cmmands that nly thse wh are truly apart f Israel may enjy the Passver Freigners may nt participate unless they have becme a part f Israel by circumcisin If they have nt adpted the sign f the cvenant, than they may nt enjy the fellwship f that cvenant The sign f the Abrahamic cvenant was circumcisin, while the Passver was a memrial f that same cvenant S is a persn had nt taken the sign, they were nt free t participate in the memrial Ntice in v.49 this rule applied equally t bth native (jew) and stranger Wmen were always under the spiritual authrity f a man, whether a father, uncle, brther r husband If the man was circumcised, then all the wmen under his spiritual authrity were als cvered Our New Cvenant in Christ fllws a similar test The sign f ur cvenant is water baptism And the memrial f Gd s faithfulness t the cvenant is ur cmmunin meal 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 14 f 21 The meal remembers the Lrd s faithfulness t His cvenant by dying in ur place n the crss If we haven t been water baptized - even if we are a believer - then we are nt permitted t participate in the cmmunin meal These are the nly tw rdinances f the church fund in scripture, and they are linked in this way Befre the natin begins their dash acrss the desert, in chapter 13 the Lrd gives Mses ne mre cmmand assciated with the Passver bservance Ex. 13:1 Then the LORD spke t Mses, saying, Ex. 13:2 Sanctify t Me every firstbrn, the first ffspring f every wmb amng the sns f Israel, bth f man and beast; it belngs t Me. Ex. 13:3 Mses said t the peple, Remember this day in which yu went ut frm Egypt, frm the huse f slavery; fr by a pwerful hand the LORD brught yu ut frm this place. And nthing leavened shall be eaten. Ex. 13:4 On this day in the mnth f Abib, yu are abut t g frth. Ex. 13:5 It shall be when the LORD brings yu t the land f the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amrite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, which He swre t yur fathers t give yu, a land flwing with milk and hney, that yu shall bserve this rite in this mnth. Ex. 13:6 Fr seven days yu shall eat unleavened bread, and n the seventh day there shall be a feast t the LORD. Ex. 13:7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten thrughut the seven days; and nthing leavened shall be seen amng yu, nr shall any leaven be seen amng yu in all yur brders. Ex. 13:8 Yu shall tell yur sn n that day, saying, It is because f what the LORD did fr me when I came ut f Egypt. Ex. 13:9 And it shall serve as a sign t yu n yur hand, and as a reminder n yur frehead, that the law f the LORD may be in yur muth; fr with a pwerful hand the LORD brught yu ut f Egypt. Ex. 13:10 Therefre, yu shall keep this rdinance at its appinted time frm year t year. The Passver memrial als includes a requirement that Israel sanctify (r set apart) the firstbrn f every wmb, whether man r beast The requirement was limited t the sns f Israel This is nt a requirement fr Gentiles 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 15 f 21 The requirement is tied t the redemptin f Israel by the Lrd taking the first brn f Egypt while preserving the firstbrn f Israel The Lrd will give mre explanatin fr this requirement later in the chapter First, He reiterates the imprtance f bserving the restrictins n leaven in the week fllwing the Passver Leaven culd nt be used in bread during the Exdus because f the rapid exit S this will be memrialized in the absence f leaven in Israelite hmes in the week fllwing the Passver We studied last week why the Lrd rchestrated a rapid exit fr Israel thus necessitating n leaven He wanted t create a picture f the absence f sin in the lives f His peple, and leaven is a symbl fr sin Finally, the Lrd explains that this memrial will ccur annually s that n ne in Israel will ever frget the wrk f the Lrd in keeping His wrd In fact, the repeating f this memrial will result in the natin f Israel declaring the Law f the Lrd every year That Law is a reference t the wrd f the Lrd and His prmises t Abraham And while Israel will be remembering an event in their past, they will als be declaring prphetically the wrk f Gd in Christ Even if they didn t always understand the picture, the Gspel was still being preached thrugh the memrial Here we see a pwerful example f hw Gd wrks thrugh memrials and bservances He gives us bservance t ensure we never frget His prmises and His faithfulness He als wants us t declare His Law, that is His wrd, in the way He has prescribed 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 16 f 21 When we practice the Lrd s Supper, we fllw a pattern prescribed by the Lrd in His wrd We are nt free t mdify it nr experiment with it We prclaim it in the specific way it was given (which Paul affirms in 1Cr 11) s that the picture will be clear and the purpse fulfilled We are called t preach the Lrd s wrd in all it s frms s that the Lrd will be see and glrified thrugh it Nw the Lrd gives additinal explanatin fr why the first brn will be cnsecrated t the Lrd Ex. 13:11 Nw when the LORD brings yu t the land f the Canaanite, as He swre t yu and t yur fathers, and gives it t yu, Ex. 13:12 yu shall devte t the LORD the first ffspring f every wmb, and the first ffspring f every beast that yu wn; the males belng t the LORD. Ex. 13:13 But every first ffspring f a dnkey yu shall redeem with a lamb, but if yu d nt redeem it, then yu shall break its neck; and every firstbrn f man amng yur sns yu shall redeem. The Lrd pints frward t the years when Israel will spend living in the land f the Canaanites, in keeping with the Lrd s prmise At that time, the natin will devte the first brn male f every wmb (every mther) t the Lrd Hwever, the cnsecrated animal must be a clean (r ksher) animal Dnkeys (and by extensin, ther unclean animals) culd nt be sacrificed S a clean animal, a lamb, was substituted If there was n lamb t substitute, the dnkey s life wuld be taken by a breaking f the neck Gd has given Israel a clear illustratin f substitutinary atnement in thrugh this practice He is teaching that Gd nly accepts perfect, clean sacrifices 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 17 f 21 If we are unclean (that is, sinful), then we are nt acceptable befre Gd Yet a clean, sinless lamb can be sacrificed in ur place If we d nt accept the sinless substitute in ur place, then we will die fr the sake f ur wn sins This is the essence f the Gspel Since we are sinful, we cannt please Gd in urselves and we are under penalty f death Since Christ was sinless, therefre He can be an acceptable sacrifice t Gd in ur place s as t satisfy Gd s wrath against sin If we accept that sacrifice, we will be spared If we d nt accept it, we will die fr ur sins Nw in v.14 we cme t understand why Gd wants the firstbrn animals killed in this way and it explains why the Lrd tk the first brn f every animal in Egypt during the Passver Ex. 13:14 And it shall be when yur sn asks yu in time t cme, saying, What is this? then yu shall say t him, With a pwerful hand the LORD brught us ut f Egypt, frm the huse f slavery. Ex. 13:15 It came abut, when Pharah was stubbrn abut letting us g, that the LORD killed every firstbrn in the land f Egypt, bth the firstbrn f man and the firstbrn f beast. Therefre, I sacrifice t the LORD the males, the first ffspring f every wmb, but every firstbrn f my sns I redeem. Ex. 13:16 S it shall serve as a sign n yur hand and as phylacteries n yur frehead, fr with a pwerful hand the LORD brught us ut f Egypt. The Lrd expects that sns in every generatin will ask the bvius questin f their parents f why the first brn male was always sacrificed t Gd In the judgment f Passver, the Lrd killed bth the first brn f animals and men in Egypt But the Lrd spared bth animal and men in Israel Nw the first brn male f animals and children are cnsecrated r set apart t remember that event 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 18 f 21 Children are bservant and bright, and s Gd s expects the sns f Israel t ask why first brn make animals are t be killed but first brn male children are spared Obviusly, the Lrd never permits nr desires human sacrifice S the Lrd tells Israel t answer such a questin by saying that this is a reminder f the way the Lrd brught us ut f Egypt The Pharah stubbrnly refused t let Israel g s the Lrd killed every first brn in the land, bth f man and beast But Israel was spared Therefre, Israel nw sets apart bth firstbrn males f man and beast The animals are sacrificed t represents the judgment against Egypt This is why animals were included in the judgment against Egypt They prvide the pprtunity t memrialize the event thrugh an annual sacrifice Clearly, if the Lrd wants t memrialize the event, He culdn t expect t repeat the killing f children every year S animals becme the substitute sacrifice S the firstbrn children als serve as a picture by the way they are spared every yeat - r as the Lrd says redeemed They represent the mercy shwn t Israel S bth Gd s judgment and His mercy are illustrated thrugh this memrial The animals serve the persn f illustrating judgment while the sns illustrate mercy In this explanatin, we have a freshadwing f the sacrificial system which will be presented at the muntain thrugh the Law given t Mses The sacrificial system f the Law uses animals in varius ways t picture the judgment and penalty fr sin as well as the redemptin ffered thrugh substitutinary atnement 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 19 f 21 Gd uses animals because human sacrifice is murder and nt in keeping with Gd s heart Yet He wanted t present t men a clear picture f His redeeming wrk in Christ Therefre, animals becme a means t creating that picture They are living creatures that experience death They have bld in their bdies and the breath f life as d peple S they can serve as useful illustratins f life and death But as we ll study mre in depth later, the spilling f the bld f these animals is never mre than a picture and sign f faith fr the participants It des nt actually prvide cver fr persnal sin We ll lk mre clsely at this relatinship in the giving f the Law later in Exdus S nw the Exdus is ready t begin Ex. 13:17 Nw when Pharah had let the peple g, Gd did nt lead them by the way f the land f the Philistines, even thugh it was near; fr Gd said, The peple might change their minds when they see war, and return t Egypt. Ex. 13:18 Hence Gd led the peple arund by the way f the wilderness t the Red Sea; and the sns f Israel went up in martial array frm the land f Egypt. Ex. 13:19 Mses tk the bnes f Jseph with him, fr he had made the sns f Israel slemnly swear, saying, Gd will surely take care f yu, and yu shall carry my bnes frm here with yu. Ex. 13:20 Then they set ut frm Succth and camped in Etham n the edge f the wilderness. Ex. 13:21 The LORD was ging befre them in a pillar f clud by day t lead them n the way, and in a pillar f fire by night t give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. Ex. 13:22 He did nt take away the pillar f clud by day, nr the pillar f fire by night, frm befre the peple. Exdus 13 20 f 21 Such a rute wuld have brught the natin int direct cnflict with the Philistines Thugh Gd wuld be with them and was pwerful enugh t defeat the Philistines, nevertheless the Lrd decided nt t frce that upn Israel Had they encuntered such a fight s early in their wanderings, they wuld have given up and returned t their hmes in Egypt This departure was a big step Thugh they desired freedm, they were leaving the nly hme any f them had ever knwn S instead, the Lrd lead them arund by the way f the wilderness t the Red Sea They first mve t Etham frm Succth SLIDE 13-18 Then heir jurney is arund, by way f a wilderness ending at the Red Sea Nte that the Red sea make tw gulfs n either side f the Sinai peninsula Bth are cnsidered the Red Sea Als, they are leaving Egypt, r as we will read next week, they g ut f Egypt As we glance at a map f ancient Egypt, we nte that Egypt cntrlled a large part f the Sinai peninsula In fact, histrically Sinai has always been cnsidered a part f Egypt and still is tday SLIDE 13-19 As we study the Red Sea crssing next week, we will fllw the Biblical cmmentary carefully and watch an interesting vide explaining the likely Red Sea crssing Finally, we hear that Mses carries Jseph s bnes in the camp Jseph was nt left behind in Egypt but was carried with the natin t be buried in the Prmised Land This was dne because Jseph made the natin swear t him befre they died that he wuld leave with them 2012 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Exdus 13 21 f 21 The fact that Jseph required such a prmise is evidence t us that Jseph believed in the wrd f the Lrd given t Abraham When the Lrd spke t Abraham in Genesis 15, He prmised that the natin wuld leave Egypt in the furth generatin Jseph believed in this prmise, and his faith is reflected in his request t be taken ut f the land and reburied in Canaan Heb. 11:22 By faith Jseph, when he was dying, made mentin f the exdus f the sns f Israel, and gave rders cncerning his bnes.
