Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and Pentecost are considered by some as the four KEY events in salvation history. Pentecost, which we celebrate on Sunday, is the day the Holy Spirit descended on early believers in a very public display of spiritual power. The scriptures describe "tongues as of fire descending on each listener" and "each one hearing in their native language" the sermon being preached. God really knows how to get our attention! It is at Pentecost that the Spirit's unmistakeable presence filled the first disciples with God-filled-power needed to move forward and carry out God's mission in the world. This Sunday, as we will recall the Spirit's restoring and reuniting work on the first Pentecost, we give thanks for the Holy Spirit's continual presence in our lives. For me, knowing that the Holy Spirit is working all around me and in me is a tremendous blessing. Here are just a few ways I recognize the Spirit's work:
The Spirit awakens me to God, convicts me of my sin, helps me repent, reassures me that I am God's child, and guides me toward a life of holiness. The Spirit endows every believer with spiritual gifts to be used for God's mission and anoints us with the spiritual power needed to use these gifts to produce results far-exceeding human ability. The Spirit intercedes on our behalf in our prayer life when we do not know what to say--and all we have are tears and sighs. The Spirit is a constant source of comfort and guidance in my life without whom I would falter. My list could go on for pages...in what ways do you experience the Holy Spirit in your life. As we worship on Sunday, let us get in touch with and give thanks for our God-who-is-with-us in the Holy Spirit.
