St. Bernard Parish Bishop s Appeal 2018 We are at: $52,425 Our Goal is: $92,843 Your Financial Stewardship For the week ended March 11, 2018 Weekly Envelopes... $ Offertory Loose... $ 17,147.00 1,269.00 Weekly Joyful Giving Budget... $ 19,189.00 This final week of Lent provides time to consider what Holy Week events you may wish to attend. Holy Week begins with next week s Palm Sunday Mass. Palm Sunday is striking for it s red color evoking a reminder of Christ s blood shed on Calvary. It is also marked by the waving of the Palm branches by the faithful and the reading of the Passion of Christ. The Passion is read on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. It is a sobering experience for those with an open heart. During Holy Week the school will host Living Stations of the Cross performed by our 8 th Graders on Monday and Tuesday. Check the bulletin or call the office for exact times. The Stations are always very well done and quite moving. Holy Thursday night provides the opportunity to reflect on the gift of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood that Christ gave to serve the people of God. Thursday night makes use of the imagery from the Last Supper, especially that of the washing of the Apostle s feet. The washing is a reminder of the mandate to serve our neighbor in love, and also a reminder that we must each be washed in the blood of the Lamb to be saved. As Christ reminds Peter during the event. Unless I wash you Peter, you will have no part in me. Holy Thursday closes with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament amidst the faithful, reminding them that the Eucharist is truly the risen Lord with us. The reserved Eucharist is then kept on a reserved Altar to be prayed with and adored. Good Friday brings another reading of the Passion from a different gospel. The service is not a Mass, but rather is a part of the continual Mass that began Holy Thursday night and will end Saturday night at the Easter Vigil. Good Friday is again awash in red, remembering the blood of Christ. At the service there is a solemn time for each of us to personally venerate the wood of the Cross. The Cross confronts us each differently and can be a very moving encounter. We will have a service at both 12pm and 2pm. There is also a collection for the persecuted Christians of the Holy Land. Please be as generous as you can! The Easter Vigil on Saturday night, (no 4pm Mass) can be an especially powerful experience for the believer. It is a long night of prayer, nearly two hours, filled with an opening fire symbolizing Christ conquering the darkness of this world, a recounting of the story of salvation through many readings, and of course the first celebration of the Eucharist since Holy Thursday night. It is also when persons throughout the world are baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith. It is followed by a nice reception of punch and much needed desserts. Consider what you might wish to attend, view our times here or at nearby parishes. And remember to be especially kind, welcoming and patient with those who may take your spot in the pew on Easter Sunday. Help me provide a place where people will want to return to St. Bernard and to God. A blessed close to your Lent! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

March 17 & 18, 2018 PAGE 3 5th Sunday in Lent I will be their God and they shall be my people. JEREMIAH 31:33 What does it mean to be God s people? It means that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.
