January 4, 2015 Meditation Thomas Goodwin uses a wonderful term. He says, Sue Him for it, sue Him for it! Do not leave Him alone. Pester Him, as it were, with His own promise. Quote the Scripture to Him. And, you know, God delights to hear us doing it, as a father likes to see this element in his own child who has obviously been listening to what his father has been saying. - D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Readings to help you prepare to worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat.

God is present with us in worship, and we ask Him to turn our hearts and minds toward Him. 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) Words and music: Matt Redman, Jonas Myrin 2011 Thankyou Music Psalm 103:1-5 CCLI #: 11107331 We gather in the presence of God Song of Gathering The sun comes up, it s a new day dawning, It s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His Holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I ll worship Your Holy name! You re rich in love, and You re slow to anger. Your name is great, and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. And on that day when my strength is failing, The end draws near and my time has come. Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, Ten thousand years and then forevermore. Luke 2:8-15 Please stand if able. 2 Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. People: And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. Leader: And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, People: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! Leader: When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, People: Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.

Song of Praise Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o er all the earth; Ye who sang creation s story Now proclaim Messiah s birth. Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King. Shepherds, in the field abiding, Watching o er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing; Yonder shines the infant light. Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great Desire of nations; Ye have seen His natal star. Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear. Angels From the Realms of Glory Words: James Montgomery Music: Henry Smart Public domain Luke 2:8-21 CCLI #: 11107331 Scripture Reading And he said to them, Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him ; and he will answer from within, Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Luke 11:5-13 3

A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together. We confess our sin and receive grace Confession of Sin Almighty God, though You guide and protect us as our Shepherd, we flee from You. Though You rule heaven and earth as King, we give our all to our tiny kingdom. Though You comfort us as our Shepherd, we console ourselves with our sins. Though Your cross has made peace, we foolishly war against You and one another. Though You declare New creation! we just prefer the old. Heavenly Father, have mercy upon us. Lord Jesus Christ, deliver us from our sins. Holy Spirit, renew us after the image of our Creator. Amen. Silent Confession Isaiah 53:5 Assurance of Pardon But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. Great God From Thee Words: John Newton Music: Justin Smith 2007 Justin Smith Music 4 Song of Renewal Great God from Thee there s nought concealed, Thou seest my inward frame. To Thee I always stand revealed, exactly as I am. Since I can hardly therefore bear, What in myself I see, How vile and dark must I appear, Most holy God to Thee? But since my Savior stands between, In garments dyed in blood, Tis He instead of me is seen, When I approach to God. Thus though a sinner, I am safe, He pleads before the throne, His life and death in my behalf, And calls my sins His own. What wondrous love, what mysteries, In this appointment shine: My breaches of the law are His, And His obedience mine! Great God from Thee there s nought concealed, Thou seest my inward frame. To Thee I always stand revealed, exactly as I am. What wondrous love, what mysteries, In this appointment shine: My breaches of the law are His, And His obedience mine!

We respond to the grace received Passing of the Peace Being set right with God enables us to participate in his work. Community Life Prayers of the People The world: Hunter and Adrianne Thompson, Northsiders who moved to Rwanda The Northside: Young Women s Academy, training leaders and recruiting participants Our church: Church marked by prayer Offering On the first Sunday of each month Northside collects an offering for the mercy fund using a tan basket in addition to the weekly general fund offering in the multi-colored basket. The mercy fund is used for financial assistance to those in need from our church and the Northside. We see giving as a part of worship. If you feel the same way we invite you to participate. Song of Preparation Our mouths, they were filled, filled with laughter; Our tongues, they were loosed, loosed with joy; Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord! Although we are weeping, Lord help us keep sowing, The seeds of Your Kingdom for the day You will reap them! Your sheaves we will carry, Lord please do not tarry. All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy. The nations will say, He has done great things! The nations will sing songs of joy. Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord! Psalm 126 Words and music: unknown 5

Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. Romans 8:18-28 Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by Kevin Greene, Associate Pastor of West End Presbyterian Church and member of the oversight commission of Northside Church. God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be prayed for during communion should pick them up at this time. Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 The Lord s Supper Gluten-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. At the back of the fellowship hall is someone ready to pray with and for you. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Song of Communion Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His Word; Just to rest upon His promise, just to know, Thus saith the Lord! Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I ve proved Him o er and o er Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more! O how sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to trust His cleansing blood; And in simple faith to plunge me Neath the healing, cleansing flood! Yes, tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace. I m so glad I learned to trust Thee, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that You are with me, Will be with me to the end. Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus Words: Louisa Stead Music: William Kirkpatrick Public domain 7

We go forth to love and serve God and neighbor. Joy To the World Words: Isaac Watts Music: Antioch, arranged by Lowell Mason, 1836 Public domain God sends us out refreshed Song of Rejoicing Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found. Benediction He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love.
