Christ Redeemer Presbyterian Church Service of Carols, Candles & Cannon December 24, 2016 6:00 p.m. PRELUDE Mrs. Linda Poplin WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS & OPENING PRAYER OPENING SOLO Mr. Luke Nash PRESENTATION OF THE CHRISTMAS STORY Isaiah 9:2-4,6,7 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah 60:1-3 Arise shine for your light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you For behold darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness over the nations. But the lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you And the nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising Advent Hymn Stanzas 1-3, Hymnal No. 147 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou Day- spring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death s dark shadows put to flight. Refrain O come, Desire of nations, bind All peoples in one heart and mind; Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease; Fill all the world with heaven s peace. Refrain Latin Hymn. Stanzas 1,2 Translated by John M Neale, 1851. Stanza 3 Translated by Henry S. Coffin, 1916 Public Domain
Advent Hymn (HYFRYDOL) Stanzas 1-2, Hymnal No. 151 Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus Come, Thou long expected Jesus Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel s Strength and Consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art; Dear Desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart. Born Thy people to deliver, Born a child and yet a King, Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By Thine all sufficient merit, Raise us to Thy glorious throne. by Charles Wesley. 1744 Public Domain John 1:3-4,9-12 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. There was the true light which coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know him He came to His own and those who were His own did not receive Him But as many as received him to them He gave the right to become children of god, even to those who believe in his name.
Christmas Carol Stanzas 1-3, Hymnal No. 161 Joy to the World Joy to the World! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n and heav'n and nature sing. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains. Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove - The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love. Paraphrase from Psalm 98 by Isaac Watts. 1719. Public Domain Luke 1:26-35 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end. How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin? The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Christmas Carol Stanzas 1,4; Hymnal No. 168 Angels from the Realms of Glory Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o er all the earth; Ye who sang creation s story Now proclaim Messiah s birth. Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King. Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear; Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear. Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King. James Montgomery. 1816. Public Domain Christmas Carol Stanzas 1,2,4; Hymnal No. 160 It Came upon a Midnight Clear It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold; Peace on the earth, good will to men, From Heaven s all gracious King.
The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on hovering wing, And ever over its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. For lo, the days are hastening on, By prophet- bards foretold, When with the ever circling years Comes round the age of gold; When the new heav n and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing. Edmund H. Searls, 1849 Public Domain Luke 2:1-7 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,

Luke 2:8-12 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Christmas Carol Stanzas 1-3; Hymnal No. 163 Hark! Christmas Carol Stanzas 1-4; Hymnal No. 158 Angels We Have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high, Singing sweetly through the night And the mountains in reply, Echoing their brave delights. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why these songs of happy cheer? What great brightness did you see? WhWhat glad tidings did you hear? Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! See Him in a manger laid, Whom the angels praise above; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, While we raise our hearts in love. Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Traditional French carol translated from French to English by James Chadwick in Crown of Jesus, 1862. Luke 2:13-15 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. Christmas Carol Stanzas 1-4; Hymnal No. 171 O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth! How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is giv n; So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heav n. No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still, The dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel. By Philip Brooks, 1868. Christmas Carol Stanzas 1,3; Hymnal No. 170 O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning; O Jesus, to Thee be all glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Latin Hymn 18 th century. Attributed to John F. Wade. Luke 2:16-20 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Christmas Carol Stanzas 1-3; Hymnal No. 159 What Child Is This? What Child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh, Come peasant, king to own Him; The King of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone Him. This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. William C. Dix. 1837-1898.
