A Christ-centered community of faith for all people, in the heart of this great city. December 11, 2016 Rev. Jennifer Mills-Knutsen, Senior Minister Scott Stroman, Director of Worship and Music

Introit Welcome Preparing to Hear God s Word Piae Cantones (1582), arr. Stroman On This Day the Earth Shall Ring We Worship in Song O Come, All Ye Faithful Pilgrim Hymnal 132 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come and behold him, born the King of Angels: Refrain: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be all glory given; word of the Father, now in flesh appearing; [Refrain] Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; glory to God, all glory in the highest; [Refrain] Good Christians, Now Rejoice Good Christians, now rejoice, with heart and soul and voice; give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today; Ox and ass before him bow, and he is in the manger now. Christ is born today! Christ is born today! German-Latin Carol Good Christians now rejoice, with heart and soul and voice; now ye hear of endless bliss; Jesus Christ was born for this! He hath oped the heavenly door, and we are blessed evermore. Christ was born for this! Christ was born for this! Good Christians, now rejoice, with heart and soul and voice; now ye need not fear the grave; Jesus Christ was born to save! Calls you one and calls you all, to gain his everlasting hall. Christ was born to save! Christ was born to save! Lighting of the Advent Candle: Love Judith Chilcote, Constance Jackson and Zena Martin

Call to Worship Leader: We are a people who seek to be brought together by the love of Christ. People: Our faith teaches us that God gives us unconditional love and forgiveness. Leader: Acknowledging God s free gift of grace, we light the Candle of Love. People: With love our guide, let us worship God. Jolene Cadenbach, United States Prayer of Invocation Lord Jesus, for eternities now, heaven and earth, like fond grandparents, have thrilled at the sight of the children s children ever bringing forth children. And now, amid the starlit night, comes the incomparable Child, the smile of God and tenderness toward humanity. We beg you, Lord, revive in us the hope of your hope, the peace of your peace, the love of your love and the joy of your joy, forever and ever. Amen. (Silent Prayer) Pierre Talec, France Passing the Peace of Christ News of the Church Hearing God s Word Scripture Reading Jill Abbott Luke 1:26-38 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end. 34 How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be

born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail. 38 I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! The Word in Song Once in Royal David s City Listening to the Story of Christmas arr. Stroman Mary and the Angel Angels, From the Realms of Glory Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth; ye who sang creation's story now proclaim Messiah's birth: Tune: Regent Square, arr. Stroman Refrain: Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the new-born king. Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar; seek the great Desire of nations; ye have seen his natal star: [Refrain] Saints, before the altar bending, watching long in hope and fear; suddenly the Lord, descending, in his temple shall appear: [Refrain] Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus Ding Dong, Merrily on High French Tune (1588) The Shepherds and the Angels While Shepherd Watched Their Flocks While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, all seated on the ground; the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around, around, and glory shone around, and glory shone around. Tune: Lyngham "Fear not!" said he, for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind, had seized their troubled mind. "Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind, mankind, to you and all mankind, to you and all mankind.

"To you, in David's town, this day is born of David's line, is born of David's line, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, and this shall be the sign, and this shall be the sign, the sign, and this shall be the sign, and this shall be the sign:" "The heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid, (a) manger laid, and in a manger laid, and in a manger laid." Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith appeared a shining throng, appeared a shining throng of angels praising God who thus addressed their joyful song, their song, addressed their joyful song, addressed their joyful song: "All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace, and to the earth be peace; good will henceforth from heaven to earth begin and never cease, never cease, begin and never cease, begin and never cease!" The Shepherds Tell the Good News Mary s Boy Child Jester Hairston, arr. Stroman Joy to the World! Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let earth receive her king. Let every heart prepare Him room, and Heaven and nature sing, and Heaven and nature sing, and Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing. Anon., arr. Stroman Joy to the earth! The Savior reigns, let all their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love, and wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders, of His love.

Responding to God s Word Pastoral Prayer The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Offertory Uganda / Tanzania, arr. Stroman Yesu Ulale / Bwana Yesu Amezaliwa Carol of Commitment Go, Tell It On the Mountain Refrain: Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; Go, tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching o er silent flocks by night, behold throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. [Refrain] The shepherds feared and trembled when lo! above the earth rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Saviour's birth. [Refrain] Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born, and God send us salvation that blessed Christmas morn.
