Dear Friends, I think most would agree that Christmas is the most joyous day of the year, when everyone seems to be in a good mood. It s wonderful to be here at Holy Spirit to celebrate this day with each of you. It s a day to remember the importance of our faith in Jesus Christ, which began the day of his birth. We celebrate this day first by acknowledging the importance of our faith and second by sharing all we have with one another. As we enjoy being with our family and friends, exchange gifts and take part in all festivities the next couple of days, let s do it with a spirit of gratitude for all God has done for us. Thanks also for all your generosity to our parish. Be assured of my daily prayers and my support of your families. Merry Christmas! Fr. Grieco Below please find pictures of 5 of our teenage parishioners who did a reading at last week s Lessons and Carols. -3-
DEACON LACHLAN O Flower of Jesse s stem, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid. (From the O Antiphons of the Divine Office) The picture on the left is one of the earliest depictions of the Tree of Jesse, showing the lineage of Jesus Christ. It is taken from one of the stained glass windows in Chartres Cathedral in France. Matthew s Gospel gives us an account of the genealogy of Jesus. We know that the Messiah would come from the House of David. Jesse was the father of David. So while the lineage of Jesus had been passed along in the oral tradition, and had then been written down, it was much later before we see an artistic rendering of the genealogy. In art, Jesse is usually depicted sleeping at the foot of the tree. The Blessed Virgin Mary is second from the top, with Jesus just above her (detail from the window is shown in the picture to the right). This novel way of showing a family lineage became very popular. and was the origin of what we now call the family tree. (This was way before we had ancestry.com ) We live in an age of naysayers and of doomsday prophets. Through the print and electronic media we encounter an insistence that, whatever may have been good in the past, there is nothing before us, except chaos, destruction, and the end of sanity. There is certainly much happening that is not good. However, today we have amongst us, the Child Jesus, the Savior of the World. From the root of Jesse comes forth nothing less than the savior of all mankind..the light that shines in the darkness..and is not overcome. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -4-
