Holy Spirit Parish Seventh Sunday of Easter May 13, 2018 www.holyspiritme.org https://www.facebook.com/holyspiritmaine/. Rosary for World Peace Our Blessed Mother, who is celebrated during the month of May, invites us to pray the rosary as a means to overcome the obstacles which threaten peace in our world. All are invited to pray the rosary for world peace on Saturday, May 19 at 3:15 PM (prior to 4 PM Masses) at St. Mary & St. Martha Churches (Armed Forces Day).

Holy Spirit Parish GOSPEL MEDITATION This Sunday's Gospel is known as the "priestly prayer" of Jesus. The entire passage is Jesus entrusting us to the Father. "When I was with them I protected them; I guarded them," Jesus says. He asks his Father to "keep them in your name." In this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our life as Christians in the world. He anticipates struggle for the believer. He describes it in strong words, words that could even appear frightening to the believer. "I gave them your word, and the world hated them." Not only that, but with our eyes on eternal life, we "do not belong to the world." And yet in the midst of those realities, Jesus doesn't take us out of the world. On the contrary, "as you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world." Christians live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus often defies nice, neat categories. We uphold justice as virtue, yet are invited to love our enemies. We offer gifts and generous hospitality to others while being reminded of the value of temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a Church that preaches moral perfection can easily fall under scrutiny when it falls short. In the midst of these complications, Jesus offers a message of hope. He is well aware of the contradictions into which he sends us, and his Father will equip us accordingly. "Consecrate them in truth." "Keep them from the evil one." Jesus does not abandon us to the tensions of our time but remains near at hand by the grace alive in his Church. Donations now being accepted for Holy Spirit Parish Fair for this November. All items must be new or in good, clean condition. Dishes: Dish sets, glassware, candle holders, tea pots, utensils, pots & pans; Jewelry: rings, necklaces, bracelets, pins, earrings, broken pieces of silver (drop off at office), handbags; Linens: tablecloths, napkins, bedspreads, new or used/clean sheets & pillowcases, quilts, comforters (no torn or stained linens); Toys: clean and unbroken, games, puzzles, stuffed animals, dolls, trucks; Christmas: tree skirts, ornaments, nativity sets, stockings, villages; Books: Not moldy, damaged, or soiled; Crafts: yarn, new fabric, and home-made craft items. Thank you! This year, the annual celebration of Mother's Day occurs on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. What a wonderful day to celebrate those women in our lives who cooperated with God to create new life and those in our lives who have nurtured our lives with love and compassion! Yes, we believe that when we are open to children, we have cooperated with God in creation. In addition, those women who have said yes should be recognized. The Book of Blessings has a profound blessing of mothers that recognizes that all blessings come from God. The most recognized date for the first Mother's Day in our country was in 1908. It was created by Anna Jaris. She worked tirelessly to make this day a national day in the United States. She even incorporated herself as "Mother's Day International Association" and worked for the rest of her life against the commercialism that had taken over her commemorative day. There are many instances of marking certain days for mothers in world history. However, for us it has deeper meaning because it falls during the Marian month of May. We hold our earthly mothers in high esteem and hold our heavenly mother, the Virgin Mary, in high esteem also. This Mother's Day, take some real time and thank your Mom with more than just a box of candy. Roman Catholic Appeal Diocese of Portland 2018 The following is taken from a message from Bishop Deeley: Our Church in Maine is growing stronger. We are creating an environment where our youth, and all those who seek Jesus, have opportunities to encounter him. By giving to the 2018 Catholic Appeal, you can help to spread God s love. Your gifts make it possible for the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation to encourage continued learning... You strengthen our Family of Faith by embracing the diversity of our Catholic Church, connecting us to our brothers and sisters in Christ from all races and nationalities. You offer hope to those most in need who seek assistance from Catholic Charities Maine. I invite you to join me in Strengthening Our Family of Faith. Your help will provide support to programs and ministries throughout our state and strengthen the gift of faith for those who need it most. 2
