Augustine - Whatever else we say when we pray, if we pray as we should, we are only saying what is already contained in the Lord s Prayer.!

A Model for Prayer (part 2)! Matthew 6:5-13! The Lord s Prayer is the greatest prayer ever prayed, and it is found in the middle of the greatest sermon ever preached, by the greatest Preacher who ever lived. It is the perfect prayer, and it serves as a model for us to go by as we learn to pray as Christ s disciples.! Augustine - Whatever else we say when we pray, if we pray as we should, we are only saying what is already contained in the Lord s Prayer.! Martin Luther - A Christian has prayed abundantly who has rightly prayed the Lord s Prayer.! J.I. Packer - This prayer is a pattern for all Christian praying. Jesus is teaching that prayer will be acceptable when, and only when, the attitudes, thoughts, and desires expressed fit the pattern. That is to say, every prayer of ours should be a praying of the Lord s Prayer in some shape or form. We never get beyond this prayer; not only is it the Lord s first lesson in praying it is all the other lessons too.! The Lord s Prayer consists of six petitions, the first three of which are Godward concerns, while the last three are manward concerns.! Concerns relating to God:! the glory of His name! the coming of His kingdom! the doing of His will! Concerns relating to man:! provision for our needs! pardon for our sin! protection from our enemy! The Lord s Prayer encompasses every relationship that we have with God as believers. Our Father speaks of the Father/child relationship we have with Him. Hallowed be Your name speaks of the Deity/worshiper relationship. Thy kingdom come speaks of the Sovereign/

subject relationship. Thy will be done speaks of the Master/servant relationship. Give us our daily bread reveals the Benfactor/beneficiary relationship we have with God. Forgive us our debts shows the Savior/sinner relationship. Lead us not into temptation speaks of our Teacher/disciple relationship with God. Thine is the kingdom, power, and glory illustrates the Creator/creature relationship.! This is a perfect prayer that encompasses our whole life. There is nothing that we have faced in the past, that we are presently facing, or that we will ever face in the future that will not fall into one of these categories.! Warren Wiersbe - The prayer asks the Father to forgive the sins of the past, to provide what we need for the present day, and to guide us in the future as we anticipate the coming of Christ s kingdom.! I think we should understand the difference between saying the Lord s Prayer and praying the Lord s Prayer. To merely recite it as a perfunctory ritual in worship is not the intention. Instead, Jesus intends for us to use the Lord s Prayer as a pattern for true prayer in our lives.! He gives us several principles for prayer in these verses, the first of which we have already seen true prayer involves the PATERNITY of God. Jesus teaches us to pray, Our Father in heaven. Prayer is all about a relationship that must be in place first before prayer will ever be meaningful and effective. Only those who are children of God can rightfully call on Him as their Father, and only those who are disciples of Jesus Christ are children of God.! There is a second principle for prayer that I want us to see from these verses:! 2. Prayer involves PRAISE and worship! Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.! The word our reminds us with whom we pray. The phrase Father in heaven reminds us to whom we pray. The phrase hallowed be Your name reminds us for whom we pray.! Carefully notice how the first three requests found in the Lord s Prayer focus on God and the needs of those who are praying. Jesus teaches us that the glory of God rather than the advancement of ourselves must be the ultimate motive behind all true prayer. We are to pray with His glory and His agenda in mind.!

Matthew 6:33 - But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.! Prayer is not simply a means for us to make our desires and petitions known to God. It is not merely about giving God our wish list. While asking and requesting of Him is certainly involved, true prayer is a means of expressing praise and adoration to our Father.! The first petition found in the Lord s Prayer makes it clear to us that prayer and worship go hand in hand. All too often as believers, we are guilty of rushing into the presence of God, handing Him our grocery list, and then rushing back out to our daily responsibilities while never pausing to worship Him or be thankful.! The phrase hallowed be Your name is the essence of Christian worship, reminding us that prayer is communion with a holy God. Intimacy with God is the primary purpose of prayer.! What does it mean to hallow the name of our heavenly Father? To hallow the name of God means that we recognize its infinite worth, we revere it in our hearts and lives, and we reflect His name to a watching world around us.! We RECOGNIZE God s name! One of the more familiar lines from Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet is from a scene in which Juliet argues that it doesn t matter that Romeo is from her rival s house of Montague. She says, What s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet!! A name is a designation by which a person is known.! All of us recognize the fact that names are important. Names are the way that we refer to one another. Our name is what sets us apart as unique from everyone else. Imagine how we d refer to each other if we didn t have names!! Names involve identification and authorization. Only those who have authority to do so can give a person a name or change a name. I didn t name myself; my name was given to me by my parents. God is the only supreme being whose identification is a matter of His own authorization! We didn t name Him. He revealed His name to us.! There is no higher name than the name of God.!

God s name represents all that He is His character, His will, and His purposes. The Bible has so much to say about the name of God and its supreme worth. Scripture reveals many names of God, each of which teach us something about His perfect character.! God never wanted His people to come up with their own ideas of God and attach those ideas to Him. Instead, God revealed Himself to His people by telling them His name. There are two important truths about God s name that we should understand:! 1. God s name defines His character! When God called Moses to return to Egypt and lead His people out of captivity, Moses wanted to know God s name in the event that the people asked who had sent him. God s response to Moses is recorded in the third chapter of Exodus:! Exodus 3:13-15 - Then Moses said to God, If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is His name? what shall I say to them? God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He said, Say this to the people of Israel, The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.! Whenever the word God is used in the Old Testament, it translates the Hebrew word Elohim. This is the very first name of God mentioned in Scripture, the name that we see in opening verses of Genesis 1. The name Elohim is God s introduction of Himself, the first impression of Himself that He gives to us.! It reveals His transcendence, the fact that He is distinct from His creation! It reveals His creative power, that He is the God who created all things! It reveals His triune nature, for it is a plural word! The name Elohim is God s powerful and introductory name, but He reveals a more specific name in the Old Testament. Each time you see the word LORD used in all capital letters in your Bible, it s because God s personal name, His covenant name, is the word being used in Hebrew.! His covenant name is Yahweh or Jehovah.!

His covenant name is personal and speaks of His self-existence, self-sufficiency, and supreme authority. It reveals Him to be the God who saves His people.! If Elohim is God s creative and powerful name, Yahweh is God s covenant and personal name. That is how God s name defines His character.! 2. God s name displays His nature! Not only does God s name reveal who He is, but His name also reveals what He is like.! Lehman Strauss - What the telescope is to the scientist, the name of God is to His children.! The purpose of the telescope is to zero in on the most remote planets and make them appear closer so we can examine them. The telescope shows something about the planet that you would not otherwise know. In a similar way, God s name is like a telescope that reveals to us what He is like.! Herbert Lockyer - If we would know what God says about Himself, it is necessary to study the revelation found in the great manes and titles He has given of Himself.! In Scripture, a name often reveals purpose, authority, and character. A person s name is frequently seen as the sum equivalent of that person. Altogether, the word name appears more than 1,000 times throughout the Word of God and carries with it the idea of character, responsibility, and purpose. Because of the unfathomable depth of God s nature and character, there are many names that reflect the way that He relates to us as worshipers.! There are foundational names of God:! Elohim The God of Creation! Jehovah The God of Covenant! Adonai The God of Control! There are compound names of God:! Jehovah Jireh The Lord our Provider! Jehovah Shalom The Lord our Peace!

Jehovah Rohi The Lord our Shepherd! Jehovah Nissi The Lord our Banner! Jehovah Mekoddesh The Lord our Sanctifier! Jehovah Rapha The Lord our Healer! Jehovah Tsidkenu The Lord our Righteousness! El Elyon The Most High God! El Shaddai The Lord God Almighty! There is the incarnational name of God:! Immanuel God with us! Jesus Christ The Lord Saves, The Messiah! Jesus Christ is Immanuel, God with us, God in human flesh. He is the very representation and likeness of God, the express image of His person. Jesus took everything there is to know about God the Father and put it on display as the complete revelation of God to humanity. The gospel of John tells us this.! John 1:18 - No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.! Declared - literally means to unfold! As God in the flesh, Jesus Christ unfolds and reveals God s perfect name and nature. He is shows us who God is and what God is like. He puts the character of God on display and reveals Him to us.! John 17:6 - I have manifested Your name to the people You gave Me out of the world.! To Moses, it was revealed that God s name is I AM. In His earthly ministry, Jesus declared that name and fleshed it out.! John 6:35 - I AM the bread of life.!

John 8:12 - I AM the light of the world.! John 10:9 - I AM the door.! John 10:11 - I AM the good shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep.! John 14:6 - I AM the way, the truth, and the life.! John 15:1 - I AM the true vine.! John 8:58 - Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.! There is no higher name than the name of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul tells us in Philippians 2 that because of His obedience and suffering, God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every other name! He is Jesus, the Lord is Salvation, the I AM that I AM.! This simply means that our God is a God in the present tense. There is no situation of circumstance in that you will ever face where there is not a sufficient name of God to meet you at your greatest point of need. God has a name for each and every situation we will ever find ourselves in.! Proverbs 18:10 - The name of the Lord is a strong tower.! To hallow the name of God not only means that we recognize His name, but it also means that:! We REVERE God s name! Hallowed - word is hagiazo and means to make holy! To hallow something means to set it apart as special, to dedicate it, to consecrate it to God for His special use. To hallow the name is to go beyond the name itself, beyond the letters, and to magnify the One who stands behind the name.! Psalm 8:1 - Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!! Psalm 72:19 - Praise be to His glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory.!

Whenever we think of God who He is and what He has done we should lose ourselves in wonder and amazement. Our response to His name ought to be worship and adoration.! Soren Kierkegaard - We have gotten confused about who s doing what in worship. We think of worshipers as an audience, pastors as entertainers, and God as the prompter. In fact, worshipers are performers, pastors are prompters, and God is the audience. When we gather for worship, whether with a handful in a storefront chapel or with thousands in St. Peter s Square, we perform a drama with different parts speaking and singing and praying and giving money and baptizing and eating and drinking all for the delight of God.! To hallow the name of God means that we seek to acknowledge Him in every area of our life. There are no hidden places in our hearts that are off limits to Him. To hallow God s name means that we live for the sole purpose of glorifying and obeying Him. He is foremost in our thoughts.! Such a reverence of God distinguishes believers from unbelievers.! Psalm 10:4 - The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.! To the one who doesn t know Him, the name of God may be nothing more than a curse word, a remote concept, nothing sacred and holy.! Martyn Lloyd-Jones - It is indeed almost alarming to observe the way in which we all tend to use the name of God. We obviously do not realize that we are talking about the ever blessed, eternal, and absolute, Almighty God. There is a sense in which we should take our shoes off our feet whenever we use the name.! Psalm 9:10 - And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.! The opposite of hallowing something is to trivialize it. To trivialize the name of God is to invoke it with no thought of worship. We trivialize the name when it is spoken from our lips, but not sacred in our hearts.! Psalm 7:17 - I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.!

Psalm 20:5-7 - We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.! Psalm 115:1 - Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory, because of Your mercy, because of Your truth.! As disciples, we revere the name of God and are provoked to worship when we consider its infinite worth. God s name inspires worship in our hearts. David Jeremiah says that there are at least seven benefits of praise and worship when we reflect upon God s name:! 1. Worship enhances our appreciation and love for God! 2. Worship expands our vision! 3. Worship eclipses our fears! 4. Worship energizes our work! 5. Worship empowers our spirit! 6. Worship exhausts our enemy! 7. Worship equips us for heaven! Prayer is worshipful submission whereby believers call upon the name of the Lord. He is our Strength, our Safety, and our Sufficiency.! To hallow the name of God means that we recognize His name and revere His name. Last, it also means:! We REFLECT God s name! There is no higher name than the name Jesus Christ. As Christ s disciples, we identify with His name. To us has been given the ministry of magnification. The Bible says that we are to make much of Christ s name.! The early church made much of His name.!

Acts 4:12 - And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.! Evangelism and discipleship makes much of the name of Jesus!! 1 Peter 3:15 - But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.! The word honor and hallowed are the same word in the Greek text. When Christ s name is hallowed in our hearts, it will constantly be found on our lips and will dominate our conversation as His disciples.! For all of eternity, we will wear the name of Jesus for His glory.! Revelation 22:3-4 - And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.! If we anticipate wearing His name in the future, we ought to live to glorify and make much of His name today. For the Christian, there is no name more precious than the name of Jesus.! Lydia Baxter, a hymn writer who lived in the 1800 s, knew something about the preciousness of the name of Jesus. Although she was a bedridden invalid for much of her adult life, her disability never quenched her spiritual joy. Her practice of calling on the name of Jesus constantly sustained her and encouraged her heart. I have a very special armor, she would tell her friends. I have the name of Jesus. When the tempter tries to make me blue or despondent, I mention the name of Jesus, and he can't get through to me anymore. When she was sixtyfive, shortly before her death, she wrote these words:! Take the name of Jesus with you,! Child of sorrow and of woe;! It will joy and comfort give you,! Take it then where er you go.! Take the name of Jesus ever,! As a shield from every snare.!

If temptations round you gather,! Breathe that holy name in prayer.! Oh, the precious name of Jesus,! How it thrills our souls with joy;! All the favor of the Father! In this name we may enjoy.! At the name of Jesus bowing,! Falling prostrate at His feet,! Claim His vict ry over evil! And the enemy defeat.! Precious name! Oh, how sweet!! Hope of earth and joy of heav n;! Precious name! Oh, how sweet!! Hope of earth and joy of heav n.
