November 26, 2017 WELCOME ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Christ the King Dear Friends, I do not know about you but when I was a kid there was so much excitement leading up to Christmas. I feel we have lost some of that with all of the distractions we find today. Let s get that excitement back.. St. Claire Portland December 14 7:00 PM Our Lady of the Lake, Lake Oswego December 19 7:00 PM Sunday, December 3rd begins Advent and this is a very special time leading up to Christmas. Prepare, Hope, Rejoice! Be careful, not to be distracted by the hustle and bustle. Don't let this be just another Advent! Take time to prepare to receive the Lord s love and mercy. Pray, Confess, and receive the Eucharist. Be filled with hope knowing that God is present and will come again. Rejoice in the excitement of the Word made flesh. Rediscover the joy in the season! I invite you, as part of your preparation to attend one of the Penance services in our vicariate: St. Anthony Tigard December 20 7:00 PM Resurrection Tualatin December 6 7:00 PM St. Francis Sherwood December 7 7:00 PM Our Lady of the Lake, Lake Oswego December 9 10:00 AM St. Cyril Wilsonville December 13 7:00 PM Let s make this the best Advent ever! For Jesus tells us clearly that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less fortunate who will receive God s blessing and inherit the kingdom. Reflections Years ago a co-worker told a story about attending a funeral of someone who was not well liked. After the funeral, the men gathered outside and started sharing stories about what a skunk Bob was. (Not his real name.) There was one man who was known for always finding something good to say. They all waited in anticipation. After a period of time, the man said, Bob sure was a good whistle. I can imagine their surprise, as they all chimed in, you re right he was a good whistle. If we look for the goodness in someone, we will always find something worth sharing with others about their life. Senior Moment: The greatest single cause of ageism is fear of growing old. A futureless view that this life is all there is results in hopeless feelings about old age and dying. The selfabsorbed baby boom generation, which once proclaimed that no one over 30 can be trusted, is a good example. Now in their 30s to 50s, its members often panic at the thought of growing old and thus search for eternal youth. In so doing, baby boomers have unwittingly become active proponents of ageism, a virus that can infect us regardless of our chronological age. Catch The Age Wave A Handbook for Effective Ministry with Senior Adults by Win and Charles Arn Sundays, 9:45 AM, in Francis Hall, learn about Jonah as part of our study on Prophets. Next class is December 3. Purchase of a book for $24 will gives you access to view videos during the week, in between classes. Purchase of a book is not required. St. Pius X reaches out to men and women to offer healing and support after separation and divorce. Our Group meets every Tuesday evening at 7 PM in the Community Center (M1) at St. Pius X Church. Each meeting is devoted to discussing a different topic related to divorce. Our current schedule, beginning October 24, 2017, focuses on the Decree of Nullity and continues through February 27, 2018. Throughout the sessions, we will take occasional breaks with a social outing to share friendships. Whether you have experienced the pain and loneliness of your divorce ten days or ten years ago, the program offers valuable insight for everyone. We are here to share the love, encouragement, and confidence of Christ in our midst each time we gather in His Name. OCP Pilgrimages invites you to accompany us on a pilgrimage April 25-May 5, 2018 - $4,799 Fr. John will lead this 13-day pilgrimage. Mass will be celebrated daily We will visit Prague, Vienna, Bratislava-Budapest, Zagreb, Bled, Salzburg and Munich For more information or to register contact Carol Stahl at 800-547-8992 or Pilgrimages@ocp.org Now is the time to register for this very exciting Pilgrimage History of the Jesse Tree: Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas Tradition that first started in medieval times. They are used to help tell the story of the Bible from Creation to the Christmas. The name comes from Jesse who was the Father of King David. A branch is a sign of new life and new beginnings. Jesus was a descendent of King David and as Christians, we believe that Jesus is the new branch. The first Jesse Trees were large carvings, tapestries or even stained-glass windows that were put in Churches to help illiterate people learn about salvation history. Today, Jesse Trees are used as a kind of Advent Calendar. You can use a normal Christmas tree of a banner in the shape of a tree. Each day through Advent a special decoration of ornament, that tells a story from the Bible, is hung on the tree. Here at St. Anthony we will have our very own Jesse Tree at the entrance of the church starting on December 1. New ornaments will be placed on our tree each day leading up to Christmas. You can also make your own Jesse Tree at home. A simple google search will provide many options for purchase or DIY at home with your family. For more info, please contact Nichlas Schaal at nschaal@satigard.org. 11
