'Nice, new, solid stone' In this issue: Rotary Club raises $6,700 to restore 1 Their names, and those of 22 other Union Army soldiers from Woodford County, are inscribed on the Civil War monument that for almost 144 years has stood in Olio Township Cemetery. A military veteran who also is a Rotarian suggested money raised at weekly meetings go toward repairing the monument, according to Bressner, who is a local newspaper publisher. Civil War monument Time and the elements have conspired to render all but illegible the roster of soldiers that died while serving in Company A of the 86th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The Rotary Club is close to raising all the money it needs - about $6,700 - to restore the monument to its old glory. The sandblasting of the monument and reengraving of the names of the dead might begin later this week and are set to be finished in time for Memorial Day celebrations in Eureka. Those celebrations will culminate at the monument and will commence just days prior to the anniversary of its dedication: 30, 1868.. "It's a really neat project," Bressner said. "I'm not a veteran, but it seems like you only hear about vets doing this stuff for other vets. It's sad we civilians don't take a step forward to do something." The restoration also provides an opportunity to blast the moss off the memories and learn more about the stories behind the surnames. "It helps us understand more fully the way Bressner said his initial research into restoration was fruitless. Some monument companies weren't willing to tackle the project, and others were charging more than the Rotary Club could afford. Eureka is in Illinois USA.
