F A I T H L U T H E R A N C H U R C H Y o u A r e S o W e l c o m e FAITH IN action 2018 Pen of the Pastor Who can preside at Holy Communion? Anybody? A pastor? A friend? Presiding at the sacrament of Holy Communion seems simple enough. All that s needed is someone to read the lines from a book, hand out some bread, pass around some wine, and that s it. But, Holy Communion is a sacred thing. And so the church wants to respect the sacred thing as it is, and honor those who receive, and those who preside. For the sake of good order, s have made it their practice to have an ordained clergy person preside. From the ELCA publication The Use of the Means of Grace we read this: A Pastor Presides At The Holy Communion Principle In witness that this sacrament is a celebration of the Church, serving its unity, an ordained minister presides in the service of Holy Communion and proclaims the Great Thanksgiving. Where it is not possible for an extended period of time to provide ordained pastoral leadership, a synodical bishop may authorize a properly trained lay person to preside for a specified period of time and in a given location only. Background In the celebration of the eucharist, Christ gathers, teaches and nourishes the church. It is Christ who invites to the meal and who presides at it. He is the shepherd who leads the people of God, the prophet who announces the Word of God, the priest who celebrates the mystery of God. In most churches, this presidency is signified by an ordained minister. The one who presides at the Eucharistic celebration in the name of Christ makes clear that the rite is not the assembly s own creation or possession; the eucharist is received as a gift from Christ living in his church. The minister of the eucharist is the ambassador who represents the divine initiative and expresses the connection of the local community with other local communities in the universal Church. There you have it. The Holy Thing (sacrament) of the Lord s Supper and the community who receives it and the Lord who gives it are to be respected. This respect guides us to keep good order. Pastor Tom

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY The purpose of International Friendship Day The main purpose of International Friendship Day is to promote the concept of friendship across different backgrounds and cultures in order to promote peace all over the world. It was originally started by Hallmark in 1919. The United Nations officially recognized July 30th as International Friendship Day in April of 2011. Today, it is celebrated by most countries on the first Sunday of August every year. To mark the International Day of Friendship, the United Nations encourages communities and organizations to schedule events, activities and initiatives for promoting solidarity, reconciliation and mutual understanding among diverse cultures. It helps us remember the importance and positive effects of friendships in our lives. Friendship is important because it helps break down barriers and connect people with different cultures and backgrounds. Faith Church is celebrating International Friendship Day by encouraging each member to invite a family member, friend or neighbor to join us for worship on August 5. We will have a potluck/barbeque after the service to mix and mingle with our new friends. A copy of the flier is on the next page, and there will be plenty of fliers in the Narthex for you to give to your friends and neighbors telling them about Friendship Day. Let s use this day as a positive way to share our faith, introduce others to our church, and begin the journey of growing our congregation.

I am inviting you to help Faith Church celebrate International Friendship Sunday. Sunday, August 5, 2018 Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Faith Church 2075 W 7th St Reno NV 89503 775/747-3246 I hope you can stay after the service for a barbeque with burgers, hot dogs and all the fixings. I will enjoy introducing you to my Faith family, and having them meet you. International Friendship Sunday helps us remember the importance and positive effects of friendships in our lives. Friendship is important because it helps break down barriers and connect people with different cultures and backgrounds.

WE ARE RESURRECTING THE CHOIR Do you love to sing, but can t read music? No problem. We just want to sing praises to the LORD. Do you play an instrument? We would love to have you accompany the choir, or play a solo. If you are a current member, former member, or have always wanted to sing, Pat Porter has generously volunteered to lead the choir, so please let her know if you are interested. You can talk to her after church, or email her at oriongreyt@gmail.com. Rehearsals will begin in August. A Mighty Fortress

CELEBRATE FREEDOM Right now we are all celebrating the Fourth of July, the day in 1776 when this crazy experiment called American Democracy began. The freedoms we declared on that day need constant nurturing through education and thoughtful use. One way to do that is to see for yourself what the legislative process is like. Engagement and Advocacy in Nevada (LEAN) is pleased to invite you to participate in an exciting learning experience called ulegislate. The odd name is an echo of such things as YouTube, and expresses beautifully what it is a role play for private citizens to experience what it s like to be a state Senator. LEAN thinks it will be a great way for parishioners to understand what happens during the legislative process. We hope it will also show how advocacy works within the legislative process to protect the least among us. The event will be Tuesday, August 7, 2018, beginning at 10:00 a.m. It lasts about one hour and takes place in the Nevada Senate chambers at the state capitol in Carson City. Each participant is given a role to play, and a script. Two bills have been chosen for debate. These are actual bills that went through the 2017 Session, however the role play calls for us to treat them as new proposals, just introduced. There will be procedural votes, floor debate, and all the activities the average person never hears about. It s a wonderful way to learn that both sides of an issue have valid concerns, that reasonable people can compromise, and that clear analysis and articulate discussion are real assets. The deadline to sign up is Saturday, July 7 th. There is no charge to participate or observe, and St. Paul s Family in Carson City will host the group for lunch afterward. There is no charge for the luncheon, and there s plenty of free parking on the street and in public lots near the capitol. To learn more about how ULegislate works, go to: https://www.leg.state.nv.us/app/ulegislate The site lists the bills that are available for the simulation, and LEAN has chosen SB 194 and SB 322. The first deals with products from endangered species, and the second calls for a civics test to graduate high school. You can click on those bills, and be taken to the text of the bill itself. By the way, there are ELCA Social Statements that relate to each of these bills. Care for Creation talks about endangered species, and Church in Society calls for Christians to be informed, active citizens. LEAN hopes that some folks who come to this event will become active with us, as LEAN contacts in their congregations, as board members, or to lead a particular program or event. As you know, Engagement and Advocacy in Nevada bases all its policy positions in the ELCA Social Statements. To sign up by July 7 th, please email LEAN s Advocate and Director, Bill Ledford at shdwdrake8@gmail.com, and please CC Vic Williams at fg.vwilliams@gmail.com. (This is a doublecheck so we don t miss any replies.) You can indicate whether you d like a large role or a smaller one.
