Sai bhajans this evening Sai bhajans will be conducted from 6.30 p.m to 7.30 p.m on Saturday, Jan. 7 in All India Naidu Sangam (1, Sarangapani Street, T. Nagar). After the city s rain-fed potholes, the transition to smooth roads within the campus of the Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) is more than a treat. The man behind the tartopped tracks is known as Madurai s Plastic Road Man. He is as much at ease when he experiments with chemicals in the science lab as he is under a peepul tree teaching students slokas from the Bhagavad Gita. But R. Vasudevan (Dean and Head of the Chemistry Department) is on a mission. Clean India is his campaign. He says, I want to change the general garbage culture of the people. After a decade s hard work and persistent efforts, his simple invention of a technology to use plastic waste to lay Devotees of Sri Shirdi Sai Seva Samaj (Jaishankar Street, West Mambalam) distributed assistance among leprosy patients on Jan. 5 on the occasion of Vaikunda Ekadesi Madurai s Plastic Road Man roads, patented by TCE, finally got a shot in the arm last month with the Union Government approving its wider application. Following a special gazette notification of the Ministry of Environment & Forests dated February 4, 2011 directing all municipal authorities across REQUEST TO READERS! Please help us to serve you better! Mambalam Times is being delivered free at every doorstep in this neighbourhood week after week. If our delivery boy skips your house or flat in any week, please call 2435 6475 between 10.30 a.m and 5 p.m on week days to enable us to take effective and immediate remedial action. 100 leprosy patients get aid for the 10 th year. They told Mambalam Times that plates, blankets, medicines, hair oil and antibiotics were given to more than 100 persons. They said that such aid is the country to encourage use of plastic waste by adopting suitable technology such as in road construction... he was elated. This is the first response of its kind to waste management, he said. It was in 2002 that Vasudevan laid the first plastic tar road within the TCE campus. It remains intact. His interest in the subject began when he heard a doctor on a TV program mistakenly saying that plastic dissolved in water bodies and caused pollution. It set me thinking after all, plastic s raw material is petroleum only. I immediately came to my lab and started mixing some waste plastic in heated bitumen (tar). And the idea was born. When the then President A.P. J. Kalam visited TCE in 2001, the professor presented his project on the good bonding and binding factor of plastic and its potential use as a coating over pebbles for laying roads. He recalls, Kalam told me, one day your test will become the convention. Don t worry if people don t approve or get convinced. You just do your work at your place. As a sample, lay a plastic road MAMBALAM TIMES Page 3 also distributed in the leprosy hospital in Saidapet between the 1 st and 10 th of every month. The Samaj can be contacted in telephone number72997 04572. within your campus first. Once the results are there to see, people will come automatically. Kalam s words proved prophetic. With full support from the college correspondent Karumuttu T. Kannan, Vasudevan laid the first 60-ft-long plastic road within the campus. Getting his technology patented was the next hurdle. After four years and numerous visits to the Chennai office, the technology was registered in 2006. An officer advised me that I should not apply for the product s patent because it is not new, the road is already there. Instead, I should patent the process, he says. It took years of discussion for Vasudevan to be acknowledged by organizations such as the Central Pollution Control Board, National Rural Roads Development Agency, Central Road Research Institute, Indian Centre for Plastic Environment and the National Highways Authority of India. Even as his technology was being debated in the government, Vasudevan started receiving offers from private companies both within and outside the country to sell the patent. But I think it my duty to serve my country first and therefore, I gave it free to the Indian Government. Article: courtesy, The Hindu. January 7-13, 2012 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Some years ago, an American media expert went on record that M. G. Ramachandran was the second most well-known Indian after Indira Gandhi. No movie star anywhere in the world had created so much history as he did. The top superstar of Tamil cinema, he turned politician and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu more than once. M. G. Ramachandran acted in hundreds of films and his box-office track record is amazing. The percentage of his flops is extremely low when compared to those of stars of his day. He was born in Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in a lower-middle class family that had been looking forward to a happy life in that island country when tragedy struck. His father died suddenly and his poor deprived widow Sathyabhama decided to return to her native land with her three small children and little else. She settled in the temple town Kumbakonam where her sons Chakrapani and Ramachandran attended school. But life for Sathyabhama and her kids was a long struggle. Money was scarce and making both ends meet was a daily challenge. One day she realized that she could not send her boys to school anymore and they would have to make their own way in the wide world. Left with no other option, she got her two boys into a theater troupe, Madurai Original Boys Company. The troupe was then under the tutelage of a teacher-turnedtheater person, Madaras Kandaswami Mudaliar, who trained the boys to act in plays which he staged day after day in towns and villages. One of the boys in the troupe was M.K. Radha, Mudaliar s son, later a leading star of Tamil cinema. Mudaliar nursed MGR like his own son through thick and thin. Life as stage actor growing into manhood was no bed of roses, and young MGR worked hard to his bones to bring cheer into his toiling mother s life. ( I have seen and known my mother struggling to feed us and it was my ambition to see that no mother ever underwent such hardships. MGR told this writer years later in a chat.) After much struggle and shocks, MGR faced a movie camera in the amazing American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan s maiden film Sathi Leelavathi (1936). He played a minor part, that of police inspector. Dressed in khaki uniform, with shorts, laced turban, stick and all, it was a modest debut for a spectacular career! Initially roles in movies were few and far between but, undaunted, MGR toiled playing minor roles. And the first signs of the MGR charisma were beginning to be noticed. He was no star yet but was drawing attention. His unusual handsome looks, his sinewy physique, his swordfighting skills, all these and a dash of personal magnetism marked him as a man destined to go places. At last his opportunity came in 1947. The man who was to be known as MGR for the rest of his life and thereafter too, was selected to play the hero in a Jupiter Pictures production Rajakumari. Written and directed by A. S. A. Sami, it was a swashbuckling tale which turned out to be a hit when released in 1948. Interestingly, the film was almost not made! With the Government of India s restrictions, imposed during the Second World War (1939-45), no film could be more than 11,000 feet in length and a producer was allotted only 44,000 feet of film stock. Sami, making his debut as director, began shooting the film at Central Studios, Coimbatore. When he had finished shooting, a part of the film was seen by the producers. One of the Jupiter bosses, S. K. Mohideen, did not like what he saw and told his partner M. Somasundaram that the project should be shelved! (To be continued) Campaign to enrol new voters Chennai Corporation has launched a special drive to register persons in the 18-19 age group with Jan. 1 as the qualifying date. Those included in the electoral roll will be issued photo identity cards on Jan. 25 on the occasion of National Voters Day. Applications will be accepted in Corporation Zone 10, NSK Salai, Vadapalani till Jan. 13 (Jan. 7 and 8 are holidays). An official told Mambalam Times that application forms can be downloaded from the website www.election.tn.gov. in. Copies of electoral rolls after completion of special summary revision are available in Corporation zonal offices and venues where polling booths were located during the last elections. Voters can check the rolls and apply for making changes if any. Application forms for change of address, name etc. can also been downloaded from the above website.
