VISION ISION BELIEVE BECOME BUILD a devotional for families The vision of The City Church is to build a Jesus-centered church that leads culture by believing in God s goodness and greatness, becoming who God created us to be, and building the local church with our lives. Week 1: believe A note from Katie: These devotionals are meant to be quick, family-friendly times of discussion, no longer than 10-15 minutes. They can be done after a meal, in the car, before bed, or any time. Each devotional has a scripture, one to two paragraphs, and separate discussion questions for preschoolers, elementary age, and teens. I encourage you to involve your children as much as possible in reading, discussion and prayers. My prayer is that together your family will futher believe in the goodness and greatness of God, become who God has called you to be, and build the local church. - With Love, Katie Venti Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families 1

Day 1 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. - John 3:16 (NKJV) It is almost unbelievable that God sent His only son to die for us. Not many people would die to save others, but God left heaven to come and die for any wrong thing we have done! How good is God? The word good can mean many different things, but when we speak of God s goodness, we are speaking of God s kindness toward us. John 3:16, says that God so loves us, that is why He came. Even when we make mistakes, God still loves us. The most important decision we make in life is to believe in God s goodness; that He would give His life, so that we can live with Him in heaven for all eternity. Preschool: Do you believe that God is good? Elementary: Do you believe in the goodness of God? Why? Teens: How can we tell that God is good? Have you chosen to believe in God s goodness? Prayer with your family: Jesus, I believe that You are good. Thank You for loving us so much that you came to earth to die for the wrong things we have done. I admit that I have done wrong and I believe in You. I say with my mouth, You are my Savior. Thank You, Jesus. Amen. 2 Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families

Day 2 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. - Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV) Yesterday we spoke of God s goodness and the importance of believing in His goodness. Our verse today says that we are saved through faith. In the dictionary it says faith is belief and trust in God (wordcentral.com). Faith is believing! In today s verse it is important to recognize that we are not the ones who save ourselves. We can t be good enough or do enough right things to be saved. Only by faith in God s goodness are we saved. God gave us the ultimate gift by sending Jesus to die for us. There is no better gift! Preschool: What is the greatest gift that God has given us? (Give hints if you need to) Elementary: Is there anything you can do to make God love you more? Teens: What is faith? Why is it so important to salvation? Can you earn salvation? Prayer with your family: Jesus, thank You for the greatest gift. Your goodness is greater than I could dream of. Thank You that being saved doesn t depend on me, but only on what You have done for me. I believe in Your goodness and thank You, Jesus. Amen. Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families 3

Day 3 For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations. - Psalm 100:5 (NKJV) Psalm 100:5 says, the mercy of God is everlasting, or never ending. The word used for mercy means, goodness, kindness, and faithfulness (Strong s 2617). The Bible is talking about how good God is. God is so good that His goodness never ever stops. He was good 2000 years ago, and He will be good 2000 years from now. It is so amazing to think that even if I have a rough moment, God will still be good. God doesn t change depending on the day or the situation like we do. He was good, He is good, and He will always be good. It s comforting to know that no matter what we do or where we go, God will never change. Preschool: Is God always good? No matter what? Elementary: How do you know that God is always good? Teens: Is it hard to believe God is always good and will always be good to you? Why? Prayer with your family: Jesus, thank You for always being good. Thank You that no matter what I go through I know You are always good. Help me to see Your goodness every day. Amen. 4 Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families

Day 4 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all. - 1 Chronicles 29:11 Not only do we believe that God is good, but we also believe that God is great. Throughout history we have called people who have done extraordinary things great men or women. When we refer to a person as great or having greatness, we are saying they are superior or remarkable (wordcentral.com). Our verse today shows that God is in possession of the greatness, which means He owns greatness. God is not just a great person, He is greatness. FOR TEENS: There is a big difference between God being great and Him being greatness. An individual can win an impossible battle and be considered a great leader. They may even be thought by some to have greatness within them, but it is only said of God that He is greatness. In the dictionary the word is means to have the same meaning as (wordcentral.com). This means God is the same as greatness. Greatness originated in God and God is the definition of greatness. Preschool: Is God great and powerful? Elementary: Is there anything or anyone that could be greater than God? Teens: What does it mean that God is not just a great person, but He actually is greatness? Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families 5

Prayer with your family: Jesus, I believe in Your greatness. All power and glory are Yours. You are greatness, there is no one greater than You. Amen. 6 Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families

Day 5 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us - Ephesians 3:20 Maybe you have dreamt of being a professional athlete or president of the United States of America. Those sound like big dreams, don t they? Ephesians 3:20 says that God can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, and that includes our dreams. Can you imagine God doing more than your biggest dreams? God is greatness and therefore He is in control of all things. There is nothing that is beyond His reach. As our verse says, He uses the power that works in us. What is that power within us? It is God! As we believe in God, His power begins working in us. God s greatness comes into our lives, and goes above and beyond our biggest dreams. Preschool: Is God s greatness bigger than your biggest dreams? Elementary: Is there anything God can not do? Teens: What does it mean to have God s power working in you? Prayer with your family: Jesus, I believe that Your greatness is at work within me. I believe Your power in me will be bigger than my biggest dreams. I believe in Your goodness and greatness. I believe in You Jesus. Amen. Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families 7

Day 6 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. - Romans 1:16 (NKJV) The most important step we can make in life is to believe in the goodness and greatness of God. That is why it is first in our church vision statement. Without that belief we are left on our own without a savior. Can you imagine not having Jesus in your life? What if you didn t know about Jesus? Our verse talks about the power of the gospel to everyone who believes. The word gospel literally means, good tiding, good news (wordcentral.com). The message of Jesus is really good news. Just as the good news of believing in God s goodness and greatness was shared with us, we are meant to share it with others. Preschool: Who can you tell about Jesus? Elementary: Is there someone you want to tell about Jesus? When can you do that? Teens: God s goodness and greatness is good news, who will you share it with this week? Prayer with your family: Jesus, thank You for saving me. I want to share the good news of Jesus with. Give me time to tell them about Jesus. Help to believe in Your goodness and greatness and be saved. Amen. 8 Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families

Day 7 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. - Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV) Our verse today, explains how to begin a relationship with Jesus. Belief starts in the heart. We must first believe in God s goodness and greatness in our heart. Then we say with our own mouth that we believe in Jesus. It is not complicated or difficult. As you share Jesus, just share the simple message that we only need to believe in our hearts and say with our mouths that we believe. Yesterday we asked if there was one person we wanted to share about Jesus with. With such great news, we don t want to keep this believing to ourselves. Continue in your prayers for this person. Ask God to give you a time to share Jesus with them. Be bold; invite them to church or small groups, and tell them about God. Remember from John 3:16, God so loved the world, just as you believe in God s goodness and greatness, He wants all people to believe. He has given us the gift of salvation so that we can share it with the entire world. Preschool: How are we saved? Elementary: What would you tell someone who wants Jesus in their life? Teens: How can you better share your belief with those who may not know Jesus? Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families 9

Prayer with your family: Jesus, thank You for salvation. Help me to share my belief with those around me. I pray for to know you. Help to believe in their heart and say with their mouths that they believe in You. Amen. 10 Believe, Become, Build: A Devotional for Families
