Weekly Readings Sunday July 22, 2018 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Jeremiah 23: 1-6 / Psalm 23: 1-3, 3-4, 5, 6 / Ephesians 2: 13-18 / Mark 6: 30-34 The familiar image of the Good Shepherd pervades our readings today. The prophet Jeremiah reminds the leaders of God s people that they have wandered far from the vision God had for them. Instead of acting as true shepherds caring for God s flock, they have scattered the flock of my pasture. Consequently, God presents a vision for the future in which the remnant of God s flock will be gathered together from all the lands to which I have driven them. God promises to bring them together with a true shepherd guiding them to live in peace. Paul proclaims that Christ Jesus went farther in fulfilling this vision by uniting all humanity in Christ Jesus, who is, as Paul says, our peace, who made all one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity among all people. The Responsorial Psalm, The Lord is my shepherd, is a beautiful commentary on how God s care shepherds God s people near restful waters and guides them in right paths. These images are continued in the Gospel account where Jesus prepares to teach and feed the crowd who are like sheep without a shepherd. When Jesus looks on the crowds as sheep without a shepherd, the scene acts as a prelude to the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand that we will hear next Sunday. Jesus feelings for God s people are captured so graphically when Mark says, His heart was moved with pity for them. The heart conveys the very depths of the love, compassion, and mercy that Jesus has for those he has come to lead back to the Father. We are the sheep of his flock. The Lord continues to care for us in the Eucharist where he shepherds us, instructs us, nourishes us. 1.) What does Paul mean when he says that Christ Jesus is our peace? 2.) What feelings does the image of the Lord is my Shepherd evoke in you? 3.) What connection do you see between the words of the Psalm, In verdant pastures you give me repose, and Jesus words to the disciples, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while? Because you asked... Why does the priest put a small piece of the host in his chalice? In the time of Christ, Jews followed a Greek custom of diluting wine with water so it was easier to drink. That practice was followed from the earliest times of the Passover Meal to the early Church days of the Eucharist or breaking of the bread. As years passed, however, people began to look for a religious reason for this custom. It didn t seem enough that it had such a simple explanation. Theologians in the East said the mixing of water and wine represented the two natures of Christ wine designating his divinity, and water his humanity. Others looked upon it as the representation of the water and blood that flowed from the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross on Calvary. In the fourth century it was explained that once water was added to wine it s impossible to take it out again. That would mean because of Jesus becoming human and entering our lives, that humanity can never again be permanently separated from God. And so that practice of adding water to the wine continues today. When a priest breaks off a piece of the Host and drops it into the chalice it is called commingling. In the early Church there was only one Eucharist in each city on Sunday. The entire Christian community would gather with an apostle or bishop for Mass. As the community grew it was impossible for everyone to gather for one service, so Masses were scheduled in many cities. To keep the connection to the bishop s liturgy, a small portion of the host consecrated by him would be taken to each of the other Masses where priests were presiding. This piece of the Host, called the fermentum was placed into the chalice and comingled with the wine. In today s liturgy the priest breaks off a small portion of the larger host and places it into the chalice saying quietly as he does so, May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it. This rite can sometimes be explained as symbolizing Jesus resurrection, because a body without blood is dead, but when Christ s body is reunited with his blood, Christ has risen. Christ lives! KM
