Service of Worship Fourth Sunday after Pentecost June 16, 2013 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Naboth in his Vineyard, by James Smetham, 1856. Today s Old Testament and Gospel lessons set up a contrast between the actions of two women. In 1 Kings, Jezebel schemes to kill an innocent man, Naboth, simply because he would not give her husband a bit of prime real estate. Jezebel s actions lead to destruction and condemnation. Luke tells the story of another woman, identified as a sinner, who gives care and affection to Jesus by anointing him and washing his feet with her hair. While Jesus companions scorn her actions, Jesus receives her gift and offers forgiveness. In contrast to Jezebel, the sinful woman s actions reflect life-giving hospitality and an opportunity to receive divine grace.
At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel, located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a Service of Healing will be held in the Memorial Chapel. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. Gathering Organ Prelude The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation.
