MARCH 2018 CONNECT GRACE-FILLED COMMUNITY INSPIRED WORSHIP TRANSFORMATIONAL MISSION Sadao Watanabe 1978 All rights Reserved CREATING INTENTIONAL SPACE In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. Mark 1:35 A few years ago, someone gave me a beautiful art print of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples by Japanese Christian painter Sadao Watanabe. The original painting was done with ink on kimono cloth with a beige background. I wanted to hang the piece in my office, but it was rolled up like a scroll and I quickly realized that it needed to be framed, so I asked a member of my congregation who is an artist to help me find the right frame. I learned a lot about the process of selecting the right frame and matting so that a piece can best shine through. My original thought was just to put a wooden frame directly around the painting, but my friend helped me to realize the importance of a wide off-white matte to help the colors and the picture itself truly pop. Intentional space between the painting and the wooden frame helped go a long way for the art to shine through. This is how I have come to find the season of Lent, a period of 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter, which serves as intentional space where we can find ways to simplify, unclutter, and concentrate so the beauty of God s presence and restorative love may best be appreciated and felt. This March, we continue to practice the Art of Lent by creating intentional space, simplicity, passion, light, perspective, beauty, and silence. I invite you in this month that holds in tension winter and spring to take intentional steps to create space through prayer, spiritual practices, or maybe even decluttering a complicated schedule so that the beauty of God within you can truly shine. Grace and Peace, Rev. Chris Heckert, Sr. Pastor EASTER EGG HUNT - MARCH 31 Join HUMC for a morning of family fun at the Easter Egg Hunt, starting at 9:30am on March 31! HADDONFIELD COMMUNITY WORSHIP AND LUNCH HUMC will participate in a weekly Lenten Service every Tuesday in Lent at Grace Episcopal Church in Haddonfield, beginning Feb. 20. Each week, a different member of Haddonfield Clergy will lead a service, followed by a soup lunch. The theme will be based on The Book of Joy, by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. BROTHERS JOHN AND EMILE OF TAIZÉ LENTEN CONNECT GROUPS All are invited to join for dialogue and prayer on May 1 with Brothers Emile and John of Taizé. Dialogue will begin at 6pm with prayer service in the Sanctuary to follow at 7pm. Further details will be forthcoming. As we journey through the season of Lent, join one of our new or existing Connect Groups! We grow in our faith best when we journey together in community, and a Connect Group is a great place to share the journey. Each week, groups will join in discussion and study using Connect Guides written by Pastors Chris and Christina. As part of the Lenten theme, some groups will also focus on practicing different types of creative spiritual practices, such as contemplative photography. For more information, contact Pastor Christina at clelache@haddonfieldumc.org. NEW MEMBERS CLASS - MARCH 4 If you are interested in becoming a member at Haddonfield UMC, come and join us at our New Members class on March 4 from 1-3pm!
