DABARLINES Biblical Literature and Theological Commentaries by Daniel J. Lewis, M.A. Copyright 2008 by Diakonos, Inc. Troy, Michigan United States of America

2 Dabarlines Dabarlines is the trade name of a series of biblical commentaries and historical-theological studies. Some are expositions of books and/or sections of the Bible, while others are thematic studies relating to Christian theology, history, culture and ethics. The Debar Yahweh, the common designation for the "Word of the LORD" in the Hebrew Old Testament, was most fully expressed in Jesus, our Lord, and this is the raison d'etre for the trade name. Dabarlines seeks to interpret areas of the Bible so that their relevance is accessible to the growing Christian. The method chosen is an attempt to bring together the disciplines of evangelical scholarship, the organization of a teaching manual and the readability of a study that is academically respectable but not inaccessible to the serious layperson. It will be left to the reader to assess how successfully this venture has been carried out. It is my conviction that theology should not be purely ivory tower, but that it should be able to be discussed among the Christians within a local community. All of the subjects in this series first appeared as studies given in such a local congregation made up of a mixture of professional and academic backgrounds. Some references to Greek and Hebrew words have been transliterated into English, though in other cases the actual Greek and Hebrew fonts are employed. Footnotes will direct the reader to either the source(s) for information in the text or to sources for further research. Transliteration It is hoped that the limitations of the following transliteration, using a standard keyboard, are not so severe as to destroy their usefulness. For those who are capable, direct interaction with the Greek and Hebrew text is encouraged. For those who are not (which will be most readers), it is hoped that the transliteration will at least bring the reader closer to the text of the original documents. For Hebrew, it should be noted that both aleph (x) and ayin (f) are indicated by '. Other Hebrew consonants receive their standard transliteration. Only the spirant forms of peh (p) and taw (t) in the begadkephat are indicated differently, and they appear as ph and th. Vowels, on the other hand, are more difficult. They are transliterated as follows: patah = a holem = o

3 qames = a or o hireq = i sere = e segol = e qibbus = u shewa = ' or e reduced vowels = a or e or o For Greek, the transliteration of consonants is standard throughout. The rough breathing mark is transliterated as "h". Special combinations of consonants with gamma are transliterated as follows: gamma gamma = ng gamma kappa = nk gamma xi = nx gamma chi = nch The following should be noted with regard to the vowels. Abbreviations epsilon = e omega = o eta = e iota subscript = i omicron = o The following abbreviations are used for books, sections or versions of the Bible. Other than these, all references to academic works are given in the footnotes without abbreviation (except where the work has previously been cited in full or where there is a standard abbreviation given by the Journal of Biblical Literature "Instructions for Contributors"). All references to other literature, ancient or modern, are spelled with their full names. OT = Old Testament LXX = Septuagint MT = Masoretic Text NT = New Testament HB = Hebrew Bible

5 The Author Dan Lewis is the former Senior Pastor of Troy Christian Chapel, an evangelical inter-denominational church in Troy, Michigan (1981-2015). He holds a Bachelor's degree in Religious Education from William Tyndale College and a Master of Arts degree in Western Religion from the University of Detroit with an interdisciplinary in philosophy. In addition, he is a member of the international Society of Biblical Literature, has performed curriculum work for national Bible schools in Africa and the West Indies, has served as a professor and/or part-time faculty at five Christian colleges and has done graduate work at St. John's Provincial Seminary. Most recently, he served as an Assistant Professor of Christian Studies at William Tyndale College, Farmington Hills, Michigan (1987-2004). He also has served as guest lecturer at the School of Biblical Studies, University of the Nations, in the United States (Kona, Hawaii), England, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Hungary. Credits Profound thanks are due to Larry Riley and Dorothy Riley, who performed yeoman efforts in proofreading, indexing and transforming the texts into Adobe PDF files. This project could not have been done without their assistance. Also, Pam Gilstad and Connie Rubel contributed significantly. More recently, Dave Blum has taken over the responsibility of converting all the commentaries into Adobe Acrobat and producing the master CD for making distributable copies. Most recently, Stephanie Bonham has contributed the transference of the Adobe texts and other media to our Website, www.dkonos.org. Others more numerous than is expeditious to mention helped in various additional ways. In the end, however, any final errors are due to myself alone.
