Weekly Bible Study Resources Translations of some Bible verses for your weekly Bible study Compiled by Karenlee Mannerino, CS For week of August 1-7, 2011 Golden Text John 6: 63 PHIL It is the Spirit which gives life. The flesh will not help you. NRSV - 63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless... NEB The spirit alone gives life; the flesh is of no avail; AB It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]; the flesh conveys no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it]. TEV - What gives life is God's Spirit; man's power is of no use at all. NLT - It is the Spirit who gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. Responsive Reading I Cor 2:1,4,5 PHIL - In the same way, my brothers, when I came to proclaim to you God s secret purpose, I did not come equipped with any brilliance of speech or intellect. 4,5 PHIL - What I said and preached had none of the attractiveness of the clever mind, but it was a demonstration of the power of the Spirit! Plainly God s purpose was that your faith should rest not upon man s cleverness but upon the power of God. I Cor 2:11 TEV It is only a person s own spirit within him that knows all about him; in the same way, only God s Spirit knows all about God. PHIL For who could really understand a man s inmost thoughts except the spirit of the man himself? How much less could anyone understand the thoughts of God except the very Spirit of God? I Cor 2:12 PHIL We have now received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit of God himself, so that we can understand something of God s generosity towards us, MESSAGE - God offers a full report on the gifts of life and salvation that he is giving us. We don t have to rely on the world s guesses and opinions. Gal 6:8-10 PHIL The inevitability of life s harvest Don t be under any illusion: you cannot make a fool of God! A man s harvest in life will depend entirely on what he sows. If he sows for his own lower nature his harvest will be the decay and death of his own nature. But if he sows for the Spirit he will reap the harvest of everlasting life from that Spirit. 9 Let us not grow tired of doing good, for unless we throw in our hand, the ultimate harvest is assured. 10 Let us then do good to all men as opportunity offers, especially to those who belong to the Christian household. Section 1 Gen 1:31 NLT - Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was excellent in every way. Ps 104:24 NLT - O LORD, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures. Legend: AB The Amplified Bible; CEV Contemporary English Version; EMPHASIZED J.B. Rotherham Emphasized Bible; ESV English Standard Version; GNFMM Good News for Modern Man; GS Goodspeed; JB Jerusalem Bible; LB The Living Bible; MESSAGE The Message; MOFF The James Moffatt Translation; NEB The New English Bible; NIV New International; NLB New Living; NRSV The New Revised Standard Version; PHIL JB Phillips: The New Testament in Modern English; RSV Revised Standard Version; TEV Today s English Version 1

Ps 104:30 NEB - ---when thou breathest into them, they recover; thou givest new life to the earth. NLT - When you send your Spirit, new life is born to replenish all the living of the earth. Ps 104:31 NLT - May the glory of the LORD last forever! The LORD rejoices in all he has made! Isa 40:26 NEB Lift up your eyes to the heavens; consider who created it all, led out their host one by one and called them all by their names; through his great might, his might and power, not one is missing. NLT Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out one after another, calling each by its name. And he counts them to see that none are lost or have strayed away. Ps 143:10 NLT - Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing. NEB Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God; in thy gracious kindness, show me the level road. MOFF - ---teach me to do thy will, thou art my God; guide me by thy good Spirit on a straight road; NRSV Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Let your good spirit lead me on a level path. AB Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; let Your good Spirit lead me into a level country and into the land of uprightness. Ps 143:11 NLT - For the glory of your name, O Lord, preserve my life. Section 2 I Cor 2:9 TEV - However, as the scripture says, What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him. MESSAGE No one s ever seen or heard anything like this, Never so much as imagined anything quite like it --- What God has arranged for those who love him. I Cor 2:10 TEV - But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God s purposes. PHIL Thus God has, through the Spirit, let us share his secret. For nothing is hidden from the Spirit, not even the deep wisdom of God. MESSAGE But you ve see and heard it because God by his Spirit has brought it all out into the open before you. NLT But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God s deep secrets. I Cor 2:12-14 PHIL - We have now received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit of God himself, so that we can understand something of God s generosity towards us. 13 This wisdom is only 2

understood by the spiritual It is these things that we talk about, not using the expressions of the human intellect but those which the Holy Spirit teaches us explaining spiritual things to those who are spiritual. 14 But the unspiritual man simply cannot accept the matters which the S Chpirit deals with- --they just don t make sense to him, for, after all you must be spiritual to see spiritual things. NLT - And God has actually given us his Spirit (not the world's spirit) so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. 13 When we tell you this, we do not use words of human wisdom. We speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit's words to explain spiritual truths. 14 But people who aren't Christians can't understand these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them because only those who have the Spirit can understand what the Spirit means. NEB This is the Spirit that we have received from God, and not the spirit of the world, so that we may know all that God of his own grace has given us; 13 and, because we are interpreting spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit, we speak of these gifts of God in words found for us not by our human wisdom but by the Spirit. 14 A man who is unspiritual refuses what belongs to the Spirit of God; it is folly to him; he cannot grasp it, because it needs to be judged in the light of Spirit. TEV We have not received this world s spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us. 13 So then, we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit. 14 Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God s Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them; they are nonsense to him, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis. AB 12 Now we have not received the spirit [that belongs to] the world, but the [Holy] Spirit Who is from God, [given to us] that we might realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts [of divine favor and blessing so freely and lavishly] bestowed on us by God. MESSAGE - 12 God offers a full report on the gifts of life and salvation that he is giving us. We don t have to rely on the world s guesses and opinions. Rom 8:5 PHIL ---we are living no longer by the dictates of our sinful nature, but in obedience to the promptings of the Spirit. NLT - Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. NEB Those who live on the level of our lower nature have their outlook formed by it, and that spells death; Rom 8:8,9 PHIL Men who hold this attitude cannot possibly please God. 9 But you are not carnal but spiritual if the Spirit of God finds a home within you. NLT - That's why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. 9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. Section 3 Ps 51:10-12 NLT - Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. 11 Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. John 3:1-8 NLT - After dark one evening, a Jewish religious leader named Nicodemus, a Pharisee, 2 came to speak with Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your 3

miraculous signs are proof enough that God is with you." 3 Jesus replied, "I assure you, unless you are born again, you can never see the Kingdom of God."4 "What do you mean?" exclaimed Nicodemus. "How can an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born again?" 5 Jesus replied, "The truth is, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven. 7So don't be surprised at my statement that you must be born again. 8Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit." AB - 2(to :), 3 6 Who came to Jesus at night and said to Him, Rabbi, we know and are certain that You have come from God [as] a Teacher; 3 Jesus answered him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, and experience) the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother s womb again and be born? 5 Jesus answered, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, unless a man is born of water and [even] the Spirit, he cannot [ever] enter the kingdom of God. 6 What is born of [from] the flesh is flesh [of the physical is physical]; and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. PHIL 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh and spirit gives birth to spirit: PHIL 8 - The wind blows where it likes, you can hear the sound of it but you have no idea where it comes from or where it goes. Nor can you tell how a man is born by the wind of the Spirit. NEB 8 The wind blows where it wills; you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from, or where it is going. So with everyone who is born from spirit. Section 4 Luke 4:24-30 PHIL Then he added, I assure you that no prophet is ever welcomed in his own country. 25 I tell you the plain fact that in Elijah s time, when the heavens were shut up for three and a half years and there was a great famine through the whole country, 26 there were many widows in Israel, but Elijah was not sent to any of them. But he was sent to Sarepta, to a widow in the country of Sidon. 27 In the time of Elisha the prophet, there were many lepers in Israel, but not one of them was healed---only Naaman, the Syrian. 28 But when they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was furiously angry. 29 They sprang to their feet and drove him right out of the town, taking him to the brow of the hill on which it was built, intending to hurl him down headlong. 30 But he walked straight through the whole crowd and went on his way. NLT 24-28,30 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. 25 Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian. 28 When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious. 29 Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff, 30 but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way. Luke 4:32 AB - And they were amazed at His teaching, for His word was with authority and ability and weight and power. 4

Section 5 Luke 4:33 36 NLT - Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon an evil spirit began shouting at Jesus, 34 Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One sent from God! 35 Jesus cut him short. Be quiet! Come out of the man, he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him with-out hurting him further. 36 Amazed, the people exclaimed, What authority and power this man s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command! Heb 4:12 AB the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. PHIL 12 the word that God speaks is alive & active; it cuts more keenly than any two-edged sword: it strikes through to the place where soul and spirit meet, to the innermost intimacies of a man's being: it examines the very thoughts and motives of a man's heart. NLT - the word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are. Section 6 I Thess. 5:19 NEB Do not stifle inspiration PHIL Never damp the fire of the Spirit NLT - Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. I Thess 5:21 PHIL By all means use your judgment, and hold on to whatever is good. NEB - ---bring them all to the test and then keep what is good in them---- NIV - 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. NRSV - 21...test everything; hold fast to what is good; NIRV - Put everything to the test. Hold on to what is good. NLT - test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. I Thess 5:24 NLT - God, who calls you, is faithful; he will do this. Hebrews 12:12, 13 NLT - So take a new grip with your tired hands and stand firm on your shaky legs. 13 Mark out a straight path for your feet. Then those who follow you, though they are weak and lame, will not stumble and fall but will become strong. II Cor 1:3,4 PHIL Thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that he is our Father and the source of all mercy and comfort. For he gives us comfort in all our trials so that we in turn may be able to give the same sort of strong sympathy to others in their troubles that we receive from God. NLT - All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. LB What a wonderful God we have---he is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every 5

mercy, and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does he do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us. II Cor 1:21,22 PHIL Both you and we owe our position in Christ to this God of positive promise: it is he who has consecrated us to this special work, he who has given us the living guarantee of the Spirit in our hearts. NEB - ---if you and we belong to Christ, guaranteed as his and anointed, it is all God s doing; it is God also who has set his seal upon us, and as a pledge of what is to come has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. 6
