5 06/01/2016 June has been celebrated as Pride Month by the LGBTQ+ community since the Stonewall riots in New York in 1969. President Clinton in June 2000, and President Obama in June 2009 both issued proclamations declaring June as Pride Month. I have mentioned before that I attend meetings of the DuPage Community Network as a representative of HOPE UCC. The focus is on the needs of LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Recently our HOPE space was used as a venue for a Parents' Education Night which was attended by about 45 people. There is a new website you can check for more info at www.commnetworks.org under DuPage County. The next meeting is Thursday, June 16 at 11 a.m. If you'd like to come with me, let me know. The guest speaker will be from Illinois Safe Schools Alliance to give a legal update on supporting trans clients. I'm glad I am able to represent HOPE UCC as we support this organization which does important work in our community. Ellen Brady HOPE UCC Registrar You are invited to a special celebration worship of PRIDE on Sunday, June 5.

News & Notes Any Interest in Cougars Baseball? There is an interest sheet in the lobby for a visit to a COUGARS BASEBALL GAME! We ve chosen two different nights in August that show promise to us, but would like to know which may draw more interest. The nights: 1) Saturday, August 13, is MINIONS NIGHT. At 4:45, the band, American English, will play their Beatles music out behind center field, the Jesse White Tumblers will perform, and fireworks after the game. 2) Saturday, August 27, is 80 s NIGHT. Before the game, the band, Hi Infidelity, will play their 80 s music, free cap giveaway, and, of course, fireworks after the game. Both games have Run the Bases after the game, too. Please indicate your interest and we ll get tickets for the night that will bring the most HOPErs to the ballpark. Thanks, Community Life Ministry Free Friday Flick! On Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. at HOPE UCC we will be screening the 2014 movie PRIDE - PRIDE is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all. Enjoy popcorn and snacks, stay for a discussion afterwards! Staying Connected this Summer at HOPE Mark your calendars for all three of these fun summer events: Event Date Time Location Friday Flick: Pride Friday, June 10 7:30 p.m. HOPE UCC Mid-Summer Night Ice Cream Social Kane County Cougars Game Thursday, July 14 6:30 p.m. Jeanne & Trott s Saturday August 13 or 27 (Date to be Decided Stay Tuned!) 6:30 p.m. with pregame concert at 4:45 p.m. (American English or Hi Infidelity) Kane County Cougars Success & Thanks! Sharing Joys & Concerns Please keep these people & events in your prayers: Prayers for healing for my husband, who needed extensive oral surgery recently. (Anna) Safe travels for Colin, who is to arrive home next Sunday from South Africa. It has been an amazing school year for him! (Marie & Tim) Green Harvest Food Pantry s financial health. They are in desperate need of funding to be able to continue operating. (Jill Hruska) The family and friends of Marie Duddy, aunt of our good friends, Sue and Jerry. Marie, who suffered from dementia was missing for over 24 hours. She did not survive, but as her daughter said, she has now found freedom. May our prayers surround them with love and support. (Marie & Tim) Ellen Brady and her friend, as they travel to Canada. (Mark Geiger) My great niece, Lindsay. She graduated from high school just a few weeks after losing her father, John, in a car accident. It was a tough day for them. (Zach Jarabeck) Thanksgiving for the continued recovery of Laurie s dad, George Hogrewe, who is home and recovering nicely. (Sally Bice) My sister, Katelyn Anderson, graduated from nursing school! We are hoping she finds a wonderful job worthy of her dedication and kindness. (Erin Cooley)
