Lantern Slide Collection AR 923 SUMMARY Main Entry Lantern Slide Collection. Date Span: 1900 1935 Abstract The collection of lantern slides visually documents, primarily, the work of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. The collection does include some images related to international missions. The slides were used by agents and missionaries to raise money for missions, while documenting the work of the HMB. That work includes Cuba, Panama, New Orleans, deaf work, mountain and rural missions, Indian missions, work with ethnics and immigrants, and images of churches. Size: 402 slides (6 boxes) Collection #: AR 923 Description The collection of 402 distinctive lantern slides documents primarily the work and mission of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. The collection includes numerous images of churches and mission work in America and the Caribbean. The collection includes two slide program used by the Home Mission Board to inform Baptists of the work of home missions. These slide programs include scripts that accompanied the lantern slides. The collection is divided into subject series including the following: A. Around the Gulf of Mexico with the Gospel (slide show with script) B. Baptisms C. Buildings (mostly unidentified) D. Churches E. Cuba F. Cuba: Our next door neighbor (slide show) G. Deaf missions H. Evangelistic meetings/methods I. Farm life J. Foreign missions K. French missions L. Groups (some unidentified) 2

Small groups Z. Street scenes Lantern slides are positive images printed onto glass with a second piece of glass to protect the emulsion side of the glass plate, protecting the image. Many of the slides have been colorized, though the images are black and white prints. The majority of the slides are in good condition though some are broken and some have lost the protective glass covering the emulsion. All of the slides have been cleaned with some mending of the glass to keep the pieces together. Many of the slides have no descriptive or very limited information. Several of the slides related to Cuba and Panama are scenic in nature. Arrangement The slides are arranged in alphabetical order by series and alphabetically by item title within the series. The two-slide program follows the order of the scripted program. Provenance The majority of the slides were transferred from the Home Mission Board from 1995 2014.
