JULY 8, 2018 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION St. Luke Parish Rev. Danilo Soriano Pastor Religious Education Tel: 630/665-2322 stlrfp@aol.com Parish Office Tel: 630/668-1325 Parish Office E-Mail: stloff@aol.com Website: www.stlukecarolstream.org OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battlefield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battlefield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. There are 2 easy ways to connect (pick one): When children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. When children live with hostility, they learn to fight. When children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy. When children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. When children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient. When children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. When children live with security, they learn to have faith. When children live with fairness, they learn justice.

When children live with praise, they learn to appreciate. When children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. When children live with acceptance and friendship. They learn to find Love in the world. FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 8, 2018 I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 WORDS John Clarke Fair words butter no parsnips. ONLY HALFWAY You can only go halfway into the darkest forest; then you are coming out the other side. Chinese proverb

LESSONS FROM A FARMER Summer often reminds pastor Walter Wangerin Jr. of his father-in-law, a farmer. Farmers, he writes, remember that we belong to the earth, and the earth belongs to God. Recalling his father-in-law working the fields, he states, Surely I don t suppose that we shall live by the horse again, but I plead that we live on this earth with reverence. Because God gave people dominion over creation (see Genesis 1:28), we are God s emblem within the universe, God s signature upon the work he had accomplished, Wangerin writes. We were placed here to serve God by serving the earth and so to be served by it. Who demonstrates that better than a farmer nurturing soil and seeds to yield abundant harvest? By his reverential stance, Wangerin concludes, the farmer calls again for honor to God and kindness to creation, that we dress and till and keep it rightly. based on Measuring the Days Copyright 2018 by Communication Resources.
