~~ Sunday, July 1, 2018 ~~ ~Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times~ O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, Why? This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, Why? At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper. Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ST. Why Register In the Church Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not registered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offering envelopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax statement or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year s Religious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we cannot issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and receive offering envelopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office. You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks Psalm 30:13

July 1, 2018 St. James the Apostle Church Page 5 ~~ Pastor s Message ~~ Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James, CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP APPEAL (CSA) UPDATE You already know that the yearly CSA is our moral obligation to help support the many ministries of the Diocese of Las Vegas that rely on our financial support to keep on going. Using the concept of Christian Stewardship, we re asked to contribute 1% of our yearly income. Let s just say that each of our 300 households makes $20,000 a year. That would come to a yearly household contribution of just $200 to the CSA. If EVERY HOUSEHOLD would contribute at least $200 to the CSA for this year, our contribution to the CSA would equal $60,000! Since our parish goal this year is $37,342, the remainder would be rebated back to our parish. That s a WIN-WIN situation for everyone! So far we have pledges in the amount of $26,070 which has come from only 60 of our 300 registered households. We ve been in the CSA for the past 5 months. Remember EVERY GIFT, NO MATTER THE AMOUNT, IS PRECIOUS AND GREATLY APPRECIATED! So, to those who have yet to participate, please, please step up to the plate and help support our parish s goal to this year s CSA. This year, let s make a special effort to get everyone on board and contribute SOME- THING.PLEASE!? If everyone gets on board, we could potentially get a nice rebate! But, let me be honest with you. I wasn t able to give my personal contribution to the CSA until just last week. To lead by example, my contribution to the CSA for this year is $500, which will be applied to our parish s goal. (I ve done the same for St. John Neumann as well just one of the perks of being pastor of two parishes!). for all. As Roman Catholics, it would be good for us to reflect on how we, as the people of God, can help our country live out the ideals of our Pledge of Allegiance. First and foremost, pray for our country because, In God we trust! Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor SAVE THE DATE!!! ST JAMES 15TH ANNUAL GOSPEL JAZZ BRUNCH & SILENT AUCTION SUNDAY - OCTOBER 21, 2018 1:30pm - 4:30 pm Texas Station (Lake Mead & Rancho) Tickets ($75) available August 2018 Please support our major fundraiser by purchasing tickets and placing an ad in our Souvenir Journal Please contact Lavonne Lewis at 702-528-0496 for further information 75 th Anniversary Memory Book St. James Memory Books are still available. If you would like to purchase one ($50), please stop by the Gift Shop after Mass. Thank you for your continuing support. The reason I was so late in sending in my yearly CSA contribution was due to two things: 1) I had to pay over $1,300 to Uncle Sam for my taxes (yes we priests have to pay taxes just like everyone else!), and 2) I had to pay over $500 in co-pay for the incident with my kidney stone, Emma. So, it took me a while, but now I m able to fulfill my 2018 CSA contribution. So, to the 60 households that have already pledged/ contributed, THANKS SO MUCH! To the 240 households who have yet to pledge/contribute, please join the rest of your sisters and brothers and help us bring this to a speedy conclusion! Remember, EVERY GIFT IS PRECIOUS AND GREATLY AP- PRECIATED! HAPPY 4 TH OF JULY! As we approach the celebration of our nation s independence this week, let us remember that we must continue to strive to be one Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice
