Lighting the Way Page 1 The First Baptist Church of Owego, N.Y. Volume 24 Issue 6 February 2018 Pastor's Corner Many go through life so lonely, needing what other people can give and yet they remain silent, ashamed to show that need. Others have a deep desire to be a companion to those who are lonely, but they hesitate to share their love. Our prayer is that God would bring us together, that we can help one another and share the comfort that only the Holy Spirit can bring. Love, Pastor Bill Movie Night in March UP Saturday, March 10th join us for snacks starting at 5:30pm a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But, he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic eight-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell. Rated PG

Lighting the Way Page 4 Where Do My Church Offerings Go? At the Business Meeting last week, it was decided that undesignated offerings would be allocated as follows: 75% to General Fund (operating) expenses, 15% to Building Fund (property maintenance and improvements) expenses, and 10% to Benevolence Fund (wider missions) giving, that is, a 75/15/10 allocation. This is a change from the previous 80/10/10 allocation. As you are aware, you may designate your offerings as you choose, generally to General Fund, Building Fund and/or Benevolence Fund by indicating on the envelope or memo line of your check. The Congregation believes that the 75/15/10 allocation best meets the current needs of the Church and any undesignated offerings will be allocated in that way. More details on how monies in these funds are being used are given in the Annual Report. This change will be effective beginning Sunday, February 11, 2018. What Do I Have? What do I have, Lord, that you would need me as a servant? Eyes, he said, to see the beauty in all that I ve made and my children as they travel life s highway. Hands, he said, to reach out and touch hurting souls, to give a hug or encouraging pat on the back. Feet, he said, to lead my children through this world of strife and to help them run from sin and follow me. Mouth, he said, to lift up your voice and sing praises to me so others may hear the joy in your heart. Ears, he said, to listen to my still, small voice of love and to hear my children when they cry for help. Heart, he said, so you may know the full love of my Spirit and love my children as I have loved you. Thomas Butler It is that time of year again! April 15th - will be here before we know it! Did you ask Sally Guydosh, our Financial Secretary, for your charitable contribution statement from last year? Thank you Sally for volunteering your time and talents to fulfill this important position in the church. We appreciate you.

Lighting the Way Page 5 Operation Christmas Child is an annual mission tradition for our Church. This 2018 is the year that we are going to try something a bit different. We would like to have a packing party; Several ministries, groups etc. have had great success with this approach. Now, to accomplish this event, we have to be ready with items to pack our boxes. This is where the shopping for you gets a little bit easier. Each month there will be a different theme from now until November, when we will hold our packing party. February is Hygiene month, as noted below. Please use the guidelines as follows when you are out shopping: Comb Hairbrush Toothbrush/ toothbrush holder Washcloth / Hand towel Nylon Scrubby Bar soap (packaged and/or in a container) Adhesive bandages - (Colorful ones can help a child be more willing to wear a bandage. Do not include liquid antibiotic ointment.) Reusable plastic containers: cup, water bottle (Consider filling an empty container with non-liquid items such as hair bows, sunglasses, or washcloths to maximize the space.) Blanket Non-liquid lip balm Flashlight - (solar-powered or hand-crank; if battery operated, be sure to include extra batteries of the type needed) Compact mirror Hair accessories Place the items purchased in the designated box in FH. Thank you for your help and contributions to this effort - A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' Name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child.
