It s usually announced right after a sudden and dramatic accident is portrayed. At times life does come at us fast. Recently, life came at me fast in a good way, through the sudden availability of a long-prayed-for opportunity. Seven years ago I was granted a three-month sabbatical by St. Paul s. (ELCA policy suggests pastors receive one after every four years.) Since that time it was clear to me that we would never have the financial resources to pay for another one. Seven years ago the cost to the congregation for Pastor Lundin to cover for me was just over $7,000. Today it would be around $7,500. The chances of finding an extra $7,500 when we are trying to balance our budget seemed close to nil. Though I have increasingly felt the need for another sabbatical, I have felt obliged to put that idea out of my head. Then a miracle happened and suddenly. Through a series of conversations with several people out side of St. Paul s, it became clear that I was in need of a sabbatical break and soon. And just as suddenly, these conversations lead to the identification of an anonymous funding source that would cover all costs of a sabbatical. Normally one would prepare for six months to a year before taking a sabbatical. With things coming together as fast and unexpectantly as they have, I find myself in the enviable position of having less than seven weeks to prepare. Here s the short version of my plan: Starting May 14th, I will begin a threemonth sabbatical. I will be back in the office on Monday, August 14. The New England Synod and our Council are all in support of this. While I m gone, there will be an Acting Pastor who will cover worship, preaching, pastoral care and visitations, an any unforseen emergencies much like Pastor Lundin did seven years ago. While we are almost certain who this will be, it will be a few weeks before we can officially announce the name. And, most importantly, this won t cost St. Paul s anything! Since this is coming together as fast as it is, the exact details are presently in flux. As soon as it is possible, I ll be happy to share what I can about my plans. In the meantime, I am grateful beyond words to those who have made this dream a reality. Pastor Hugh Haffenreffer WORSHIP SCHEDULE: 8:00 & 10:30AM w Adult Ed. at 9:15AM w Sunday School at 10:30AM

ST. PAUL S GIVING TREE Look for the new St. Paul s Giving Tree sprouting in the Fellowship Hall beginning April 1st. We all know that we have many budget areas this year where funding has been decreased or changed to a $0.00 line item. The branches of ministry on our Giving Tree where our financial support is needed include Children and Youth, Worship and Music, Office and Administration, Building Upkeep, Synod Participation and Evangelism/Stewardship. We can all help to pay for these necessary items by taking a leaf off the tree and designating your dollars to go towards one of our church needs. It is easy to do! Just follow these simple steps to contribute: Find a branch on the tree for one of St. Paul s ministries. Choose a leaf for the donation you would like to make to help fund our budget items. Take an envelope from the table near the tree. Include in the envelope the leaf and your cash or check made out to St. Paul s Church so your funds can go to your chosen branch. Place the envelope in the Sunday offering. This is another way we can all work together to support our congregation and its work. For questions about our St. Paul s Giving Tree, please contact Julie Perry, Council President. Like the roots of a tree so we support each other Like the trunk of a tree so we stand as one Like the leaves of a tree so we renew each other Like the branches of a tree so we hold together the spirit of our lives Anonymous EASTER CROSS Your assistance is needed in decorating the large cross in the sanctuary on Easter morning. Each family is invited to bring a single fresh flower to place on the cross to help transform it into a beautiful symbol of the resurrection. A special thanks to Jan Pergande for coordinating this tradition. April 2012 pg. 4
